Saturday Mail Delivery May End Soon! |
|
I don't believe this is going to happen now that I'm OUT of there! For years all of us that worked for the Postal Service had been saying if they were serious about saving money they'd go to five-day delivery but that was always out of the question and wouldn't even be put on the table. Now, the Postmaster General has asked Congress to lift the requirement for six-day delivery.

Mail volume has been dropping in recent years and it's predicted that this year, for the first time ever and despite rate increases, they'll take in less money than the year before. Of course, the price of fuel and other increased costs have affected the USPS's bottom line but, in my opinion as a former letter carrier it's their own fault also. As soon as the Postal Service decided that money is their top priority instead of service they started losing customers. If you've ever had a problem with misdeliveries you should know that the reason they happen much more than in the past is because the carriers are constantly harassed about getting done as quickly as possible and if they go into overtime they get reprimanded but if they give someone the wrong mail that's not that big a deal!
So, how do you feel about this? Will it bother you to only get mail five days a week? Annie

2. Trace86 (3407) | 12 months ago | It may seem strange at first, but I would get used to it fairly quickly. It seems like I only get bills and junk mail anyway. Nobody writes real letters anymore anyway. It's all email. It has probably been a long time coming. I wonder if they will decrease the mailcarrier's pay if they decrease the work week. That would be a real downside for the carrier.

anniepa (9289) | 12 months ago | No, carriers get paid by the hour. It would result in fewer carriers being needed but since most offices have been working shorthanded for ages with the slack picked up by temp employees it shouldn't result in career carriers being laid off. Annie

3. OLIJULSAR (1063) | 12 months ago | It really doesn't matter one way or the other to me. We live in the country and we have a delivery driver and I am sure especially in weather like we are having right now that he wouldn't mind only having a five day delivery. We just now at 4 pm got our road plowed. Ours is usually the last one to be plowed and then only when it is time for the school buses to run. So i am sure that for our mailmen to have a long week-end is something that everyone in the work force looks forward to.

4. angusthethird (439) | 12 months ago | To clarify:
I just got back from reading what was actually said. Tuesday seems to be the day being looked at, because of its tendency to be one of the days with the lightest mail volume.

anniepa (9289) | 12 months ago | Yes, I read that too after I posted this. They've been saying that for years whenever the idea of a five day week was brought up but it seems unlikely they'd end up choosing Tuesday or any other weekday because of complaints they'd likely get from businesses. Tuesday is the lightest day now but if a day were eliminated that would likely change. As it is Tuesday is the lightest day because of so many businesses being closed on Saturday. Annie

5. suspenseful (17152) | 12 months ago | We already get just five day mail delivery in Canada. Most of us are either emailing or calling people on the phone because the price of stamps is going through the roof. The higher the cost of postage, the less people will write letters. We have trouble with people getting wrong mail, but that is because of this stupid idea up here to be multiculturalism, and that means that people who do not know English (or French if they live in Quebec) are hired by our post office and they put the mail in the wrong slots. And they just read the postal code. At least with five day delivery, you do not have to be home on Saturday. It would be a good thing.

6. irishidid (3072) | 12 months ago | Oh heck, why not. They take off for holidays no one celebrates any more so why not Saturdays? At least they aren't taking off for obscure holidays (The President's dog has fleas Day LOL)

anniepa (9289) | 12 months ago | Hey, I want to protest! I never got that day off when I worked there...lol! You're absolutely right about the obscure holidays they get off, though. I always said I'd rather work those days instead of dealing with the MESS we had the day after a holiday! There is no delivery on those legal holidays like Veterans Day, MLK Day, etc. and the windows are closed by mail is still processed and collections are made so it means a double day's worth of mail, mostly JUNK (It feels so good to call it that! We weren't "allowed" to when I worked there!). Annie

7. snowy22315 (8137) | 12 months ago | I guess it wouldnt bother me that much. I noticed that my local post office already cut back it's Saturday hours. I think if we dont get Saturday mail delivery though the cost of postage stamps should go down. 42 cents or whatever it is to mail a letter is pretty darn expensive. When I was young it was like seven cents.

8. jonesy123 (3254) | 12 months ago | I lived in Austria where five day delivery is normal. It's kind of strange at first but you get used to it. The only time it's bothersome is when you wait on something important to be delivered because there is one day less and a whole weekend to wait...
We didn't get mail the last two days because of the weather conditions. And you are right, service has gone down tremendously.

9. spalladino (9066) | 12 months ago | Actually, I'll only be getting mail 4 1/2 days a week now. Our post office has been closing at noon on Wednesdays since this town first opened a post office so, yes, it will bother me. We do a lot of business no Ebay, as you know, and my husband had parts coming and going all throughout the week. Our post office is only open for a couple of hours on Saturdays as it is. I know that a lot of the retirees down here who still receive paper checks aren't going to be happy if the first of the month falls on a Saturday and they have to wait until Monday to get their check.

anniepa (9289) | 12 months ago | Don't you get home delivery in your town? There are a couple really small towns near me where they don't get home delivery and the people either have to go to the Post Office when they're opened to get their mail or pay for a P.O. Box. As far as checks that are delivered on the first, I'd guess they'll adapt to that by having the government checks mailed out a day early when the first falls on the day they're not delivering. Also, I'd guess there will still be parcel post delivery and definitely Express Mail. Annie

10. Thoroughrob (7979) | 12 months ago | I think it is a good idea. The only thing I would worry about is bills getting to companies on time. I think they should have to give a grace period until we figure out how much it will affect it.
