When you cook, do you hurt yourself? email this discussion to a friend?

In my time I have injured myself more than once. I have cut myself, and I have burned myself. Last weekend I was making caramel sauce, and I splashed some hot sugar syrup up on my cuticle of my right thumb. Luckily it was calloused, so although the blister looked bad, it has been relatively painless. I remember my mom talking about spilling sugar syrup into her shoes as a child. I cannot imagine the pain.

My legs get so tired if I'm standing for a long time on the kitchen tile floor with no shoes. So, I'm always wearing either slippers or Crocs. Almost always sweats and a t-shirt. Comfort is key.

Comfort may make us less prone to accidents, I guess.

Have I hurt myself cooking? All I can say to that is: Don't cook bacon with your shirt off. It'll sting like a... well it'll still pretty badly.

I can imagine. I will be careful to not cook the bacon with too much exposed skin.

hi, gerty...

Cooking is one of the chores where you can't avoid accidents or getting hurt.

I get cut or burn or scalded now and then while cooking. I even dropped some utensils and dishes on the feet at times lol... clumsy muchblush
but yeah, I take it as something unavoidable especially when I am in a hurry to cook and still have some things to do at home.

The end result is something to look forward to and the pains are just something that we can ignore especially when you see the appreciation on the faces of the people you love when they eat the dishes you prepare... w00t

That is true. It is sad when no one cooks at home. Some days I have more accidents than on others.

I've had the normal variety of small burns and cuts while preparing meals but the worst was a steam burn. I was cooking Thanksgiving dinner and had a 20 lb turkey in a large Dutch oven. I was taking it out of the oven to check it and just as I was setting it down the lid slipped off. Like an idiot I didn't have my oven mits on I was using them like potholders so the blast of steam that came out of the pan went right over the back of my hand. I knew immediately it was really bad. About an hour later my hand started to swell up and the pain was horrific. The only relief I could get was to keep my hand in icewater. Whenever I'd take it out of the water the pain would start again. That went on literally all night and I got no sleep at all. By the next morning I could take my hand out of the icewater for a while without screaming in pain so I covered my hand in aloe vera gel and that took much of the sting out of it. Though as soon as it dried completely I'd have to reapply it so the only way I could sleep was to put a wet washcloth over the gel.

Later the 2nd day the skin on 2 fingers started turning a grotesque gray color so I knew at least my top layer of skin was dead and had to come off before infection set in. I disinfected a pair of tweezers and a pair of cuticle scissors and proceeded to cut all the dead skin off. It was so gross but fairly painless. Then the blisters came up! They were huge but I was glad to see them. At least I had some protection for the skin under them. They were there for about 10 days before they popped and then I had to go back to the tweezers and scissors to cut all the new dead skin off. I lost a lot of skin off 3 fingers but my ring finger got the worst of it. The skin over the entire back of my hand peeled for months and looked terrible, all raw and red. I had a pronounced dip in the ring finger for about a year.

Looking back I probably should have gone to the hospital immediately but I knew they couldn't do much more than I could do myself. I just had to make darn sure it didn't get infected and thank goodness it didn't. It was pretty ugly for about a year but it wasn't permanent. Everything eventually grew back and the scars faded. That's been about 5 yrs ago and there's no evidence now that it ever happened except for some very horrible memories of intense pain, some excellent one handed coordination skills and a really good pair of oven mits which I use religiously! lol

After an experience like that I can see why you use the oven mitts religiously. I would probably do the same thing.

I have never heard of a cook that has not hurt herself or himself at one time or another. I have cut myself, and burned myself many time. One I was talking a pan out of the oven I don't know what happened but the whole pan tipped over and hot grease splashed all over my hands. That was absolutely horrible.

The main way i injure myself is burning myself taking pans out of the oven. I don't like to wear the oven mitts and I guess my judgement of distance is somewhat off. That's why I don't cook much, at least in the oven.

I'm terrible for cutting myself and burning myself in the kitchen. Instead of sugar syrup though, I've splashed hot fat on me. I guess that's a pretty similar pain, but I found that if you have some lavender oil handy in the kitchen, or a lemon, they soothe burns excellently. As for the cuts, it's a case of a quick rinse under the cold tap and slap a plaster on! ha ha ha.

Brightest Blessings my friend.

I have before had this same problem. I constantly cut myself when trying to chop vegetables as well as have spilled oil and vinegar on myself. I have tried really hard lately to pay attention to what I am doing and to take it slower and that has helped me a lot. I think that this is a problem that most of us face however by being careful this problem can be ameliorated. Good luck.

I think everyone has hurt themselves when cooking atleast once in their lifetime, or will experience it lol. As for me, when im cooking fried eggs, it sometimes ends up spitting at me lol. There has been many other times when ive hurt myself when cooking, but everyone goes through it and it isn't too bad.

I'm always getting minor burns taking things in and out of the oven that sometimes blister but are generally just painful. I've never had any majorly painful accidents with hot oil or syrup, or any accidents chopping things up, though there have been a few near misses.
