Flower Beds Done  email this discussion to a friend?

This shot shows a couple of my flower beds. I did a lot of work all weekend with the mulching etc. In the background are 4 Astillibes and the pole area is my Clematis. In the foreground I have DayLilies, seedums, and beebalm. I also have Asiatic Lilies & Lily of the Valleys in both areas. The mulch holds mpoisture in so I do not have to water so often. Do you use mulch at all in your gardens be they flowers or veggies? What type do you use?

When my son works in the flower bed and when we do have a small garden he uses mulch. I am not sure what kind he buys and uses. A lot of flowers you will have before long.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

The kind all depends on personal prefrences as well as color scheme of the area to be covered I feel.

I am working on me a portable flower garden. It is in a large pot. I am going to do a veggie garden the same way. I am also working on a upside down tomato plant you put in a 2 liter drink bottle. I am also thinking about doing some other plants this way as well.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

I've wanted one of those upside down deals.
But I have such a large garden I just plant them in a bed.

I'd sure be interested to know how the upside down tomato planter works out for yield as I have been thinking about trying them as well.

myLot reputation of 92/100. beautyqueen26 (34377)  3 years ago

You can actually use a two liter bottle for a tomato planter?
That's an awesome idea.
I saw an upside down planter being sold on TV for almost $20.
I could do the cheapie version a lot better.
And then I could have ten or twenty.

Can you plant other things in the upside down version like
spices and such?

Is it difficult to take care of?

Would love to know.
Thanks for the great idea.

Wow, it looks like you sure have been busy. I do not have a garden as I live on the second floor so sometimes I will plant a few things in pots using potting soil. I will probably skip this year as the past year has been full of family difficulties.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

Been busy for a couple weeks. And now almost all is done for the year other than basic tending to things.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

I buy bags of red wood chips at Home Depot. So far I bought and laid out 5 bags. I need a few more yet though. I lay about 2 to 3 inches deep too. They are $3.67 I think per bag and they last all year. I rake them up in spring as they soften from the winters freeze.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

I was at the one by NorthTown mall actually Sunday morning.
Leaves and grass clippings work as well but not as pretty looking.

In Oklahoma it's necessary to mulch, otherwise most plants would die with the summer heat. As much for water retention, mulch is necessary to keep the roots from cooking. Ground soil tempertaure can reach in excess of 105 degrees. I try to keep 4 or 5 inches of mulch everywhere.
YTou garden looks grea6t, I bet you can't wait for flowers! Here's a shot of my clematis, it's really gotten big.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

I added a comment on your photo as well. My Clematis is a deep purple color. I lay about 2 to 3 inches of mulch usually on my beds. Not the garden though. The tomatoes get mulch not pother plants though.

I was going to use mulch until I checked the prices! I'll just water, I can't justify spending all that money on a bunch of wood bark.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

I get mine at Home Depot and it runs $3.67 a gab. I use 7 to 10 bags yearly. It stays on the ground all year and I rake it clean come early spring laying new. You can also use grass clippings as a mulch. It doesn't look real good but it works just as well actually. We also have a center here where we can get basic wood chips free but we have to pick them up ourselves. Ask your city if they have free wood chips available.

We have yard waste compost for free here. It can be anything from wood chips to grass clippings. The transfer station has mountains of it. It was funny to see the geese come land on top and try to nest, when the weather was still kind of chilly. The decomposing stuff produces heat.

We did put in mulch the first summer we moved into the house and we didnt have alot so we spread it pretty thin....needless to say it didnt last long and it is long gone by now 4 yrs later...LOL lol however, we have planted, replanted.... did a garden, or two....and we are still working out what will work best in our yard because we get great morning sun... but by 4 our back yard is 3/4 shade... so we are still a work in progress!! LOL cool

I think you have a great start there and in about a month you are really going to start enjoying all your work!!!!thumbup

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 40 in landscaping  3 years ago

4 years? I buy new bags each year as it gets soaked and can get moldy which will kill or disease the plants. My back yard gets sunshine from sun rise until an hour before sunset. Most days thats about 8 to 10 hours. Lots of sun and great for me as well as the garden etc.

I have never used mulch before in a garden. Here I was making excuses for myself in another one of your discussions about not having time to water things and then I read this post.

Yeah, Grandpa Bob is back in his garden! I love your discussions and pictures attached. Yes, we use mulch in our beds. Cedar chips. It's almost a MUST in hot sunny Texas.
