Do you have any good ideas as to what to do with someone's old wedding dress? |
I have my daughters very expensive wedding dress from her first marriage. She doesn't want it. It was almost $700.00 over 15 years ago so you know there is alot of material, beads and sequins on it. I am going to take all the beads off and the sequins...but what would you do with all the material? It's beautiful white satin. Not practical for pillows...not practical for making a blanket out of it but it's much too beautiful to just throw away. Any ideas are welcome.

1. Kashmeresmycat (1283) | 6 months ago | If it's still in good shape why don't you sell it? Do you have a re-sale shop close to you? Some people go to these shops especially for items like this as the economy is so down right now. Or they're just out of work.
I can't remember if you're a crafter or not? There might be some idea's off into that area.

2. SomeCowgirl (8075) | 6 months ago | What about draperies or curtains? A shower curtain, well maybe not that one... hmmm. I'm not that creative, lol, so sorry if my suggestions aren't that good. Check this link out, maybe you'll find more ideas! http://ths.gardenweb.com/... worry, IT'S NOT A REFERRAL LINK!

jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | Good I'll certainly check it out! I hate having it just laying around getting older and older!

SomeCowgirl (8075) | 6 months ago | I can't really comment on that, I come from a family of collectors, whether it be valuable or just not wanting to be thrown away, lol. My fiance comes from that kind of family too, so lol.

3. ElicBxn (15236) | 6 months ago | maybe you can remake the fabric into some little girl dress up clothes, I know I used satin scraps to make sachets, even a little lace on them too, pretty and smelled good - but the resale shop might be the best idea
| |
| |
jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | It just might be....I was worried about the size and how old it is.
| |
ElicBxn (15236) | 6 months ago | if its not too "stylish" it should be good, even with a few adaptations,

4. carolbee (6728) | 6 months ago | Many years ago I sold mine to a resell it kind of shop. Didn't get much for it but it was off my hands. Did save it for a long time but our kids didn't have any interest in wearing it. Plus, it was too small. Think our oldest daughter also sold her wedding dress but can't remember where. You might try selling it on e-Bay and see what happens. I have one here, from our youngest daughter, which is just sitting in the closet catching dust.

jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | I would sell it but I think it's out of date....also she is so tiny that it's a 1 or something like that.....lately I haven't seen alot of size 1 brides......but who knows it might sell!
| |
carolbee (6728) | 6 months ago | That is little. Maybe call a consignment shop and see what they offer.

5. deathspectacular (824) | 6 months ago | Dye the fabric and make clothing out of it. The a nice satin skirt and a nice satin top can never go wrong.
| |
| |
jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | Or if I did dye it I could make pillows etc out of it.....thanks for the idea..I didn't think about changing the color.

8. gdesjardin (301) | 6 months ago | What about sachets. You could dye the fabric different colors and make a bunch of different sachets. Make one side out of the satin fabric and the other side use toulle or something with tiny little holes and file with popurri (not sure how to spell that). If you aren't up to the task, I would put the material up on ebay or even etsy as they selling crafting supplies including material on there as well.

jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | Very good ideas!!! THanks so very much!

gdesjardin (301) | 6 months ago | If you are good at sewing I would sew the sachets and sell them on etsy - that way you would probably get more for your money. I am sure a wedding dress with all the gathering and stuff would make a ton of sachets and even if you sold them for cheap you would make a ton of money. Just a thought. I am not a big fan of sachets myself, however I have a huge walk in closet which doesn't have a A/C vent - the closet is so hot and ends of smelling a bit musty in the summer. I sewed up some sachets just to make sure our clothes stay fresh smelling. If I didn't sew, I would have definitely purchased some.

jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | Do you put potpourri in them?
| |
gdesjardin (301) | 6 months ago | Actually the ones in my closet I put pine needles. I didn't want my husband's clothes smelling like flowers. I also have some sachets in my pantry and those have orange peel in them. My kids all have them in their room as well....each kid has a different scent.

9. winewhisky (285) | 6 months ago | I would look into selling it. Even if you think its out of fashion there might be a bride out there who wants an out of fashion dress. People have all kinds of different tastes, you never can tell. Or a dressmaker or someone good at dressmaking might want to buy it and adapt it for someone else. If you weren't worried about getting the money for it, you could perhaps give it to a charity shop to sell.
| |
| |
jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | I am not worried about the money....and donating it to charity is a very good idea....I hate to see all that material and beads go to waste.

10. ElusiveButterfly (9426) | 6 months ago | What a dilemma! You have received some very good ideas about using the satin. I would use it for pillows myself. Make ring bearer's pillows out of material. You can add lace and ribbons to it for decoration.
| |
| |
jillhill (11655) | 6 months ago | I thought about that too and selling them.
