I May Need A Baby Bed or Bed Rails...

Well, my Mom is now threatening me…with a baby bed!! She is insisting that she is either going to buy me a baby bed or bed rails to keep me from falling out of our bed. The other night I remember waking up to go to the bathroom and starting to get up, the next thing I knew I was on the floor between the bed and wall on my hands and knees and my arm was throbbing where I’d hit it on the wood frame of our bed (it’s a waterbed). It hasn’t bruised yet but I can feel it so I know I’ll have a doozy of one before long. This isn’t the first time I’ve fallen either…not long ago I got up to go to the bathroom and suddenly it was like my left leg just disappeared. I mean it really felt like it wasn’t there at all. It threw me off balance and I came about 6” from going head first through our bedroom window. I don’t know if the disappearing feeling has anything to do with my diabetes or if it’s just some freaky thing. I’ve thought about moving the bed but it’s really hard to get in and out of with one side against the wall and it’s a nightmare to put the sheets on when it’s against the wall. My Mom is worried that I’m going to fall and really hurt myself one of these times…which I understand. Have you ever fallen out of bed? What would you do in this situation? Would you prefer a baby bed or bed rails? Does your mom still worry about you? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

OMG twoey! Almost through the window? That's scary and no wonder your Mom wants you to do this. I would think somewhere you could find some sort of rail or something "thin" enough to fit beside the water mattress and the wood frame. No I haven't fallen out of bed. I was thinking maybe because of your diabetes that your legs maybe fall asleep on you? And that's why you lose your balance? Is the bed high and could you possibly lower it somehow or get a lower frame? Poor kid, I'd be scared for you too!

I understand why she's worried too. I'm sure if there is a rail for the bed she will find it...even if she has to have one made. I'm not sure what the problem is with my legs...it's happened a few times. I thought maybe the falling asleep thing too but there's no tingly feeling in them like when your leg falls asleep and then wakes up. The bed isn't high or anything and most the time I get in and out easily, this just started about 4-6 months ago. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I found something for you. It's called the Bedside Assistant and I'm sure you can find it cheaper but this shows a picture, and it can be used with a waterbed. Amazon would have it cheaper I bet. It's not bad looking either, not at all. I have NO AFFILIATION with this site. Good Luck, can't have you hurting yourself. I hope this link works. ......http://www.seniorssuperstores.com/cart/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=391.......

Mine does the same thing...even insisting on talking to Hubby and telling him to "make sure" I eat something, go lay down or take medicine. Sometimes I think she misses me not being a kid anymore LOL **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

no, I haven't fallen out of bed in ages, and I don't know how you'd put bed rails on a water bed No, mom hasn't been worring about me falling out of bed, that's what we have to do with her. they now have her in a bed that goes down almost to the floor because she kept trying to get out of it and that meant she might fall and get hurt

First, I'd talk to my doctor! You could have some circulation problems which can set you up for bigger stuff in the future. Your mention of no feeling in your left leg is very alarming and you should have it checked out immediately.

I should see the doctor Twoey. You may just have been very sleepy, but it might be something else. Personally I would prefer rails although it would depend on who "Mommy" was!!! LOL.

Hi towey68, sorry for this late response, but I have been busy. I would have to say bed rails if fallng from the bed is a problem. I think you are too big for a baby bed ahahahah. I have not fallen out of my bed for a long time and when I did, it was a very short distance. I never got hurt.

I have not had this happen to me, but it has usually been something for a lot of laughs. I don't think I've actually used the word "goodnight" in years. This is because instead, especially on instant messenger or on the phone, when someone tells me that they're going to bed, I say, "Watch out for the edge of the bed." There was one case where I am friends with both, a husband & a wife. I had met them both online in games before I knew that they were the both halves of a married couple. However, the wife mentioned to me that she would be right back, because she had to get her husband out of bed, because it is always a hardship in getting him up to get to work on time. I suggested to her that she "lifts one side of the mattress & let the floor be a rude awakening." When she said it was too heavy to do, I suggested that she climb onto the bed, & use her feet to push & let the floor be a rude awakening. I then got a response, "Will you stop giving my wife ideas. You're such a bad influence on wives." I've pulled things on both of them, as well as another couple that they're real-life friends with that had everyone in fits of uncontrollable laughter, & it's usually from giving the wives "smart" ideas. Have you ever found out the hard way that the ceiling can be a rude awakening as well?

You could always just have the mattress on the floor, that's what my sister did! LOL. As for the disappearing limb sensation, i doubt that has anything to do with your diabetes. it is more likely caused by you sleeping funny on that limb and slowing the circulation down. Your limb goes to sleep and it is the weirdest feeling, especially when you go to use the limb! LOL.

You say that your bed is against the wall... have you thought of switching sides so that your against the wall instead of at the other side? That may help a bit as you can wake up more and be conscious of your surroundings. I've never been threatened with that, luckily. I'm sorry your having trouble with falling out of the bed. As for the question about whether my mom still worries about me, yes and if she didn't I'd worry lol.

Hi,twoey I think you need to go to the doctor..It is very dangerous to you when your leg has no feeling and you fall because of it..It could be some kind of medical problem..I am diabetic too..I have never had that problem on account of it..I have arthritis in my knee and it has went out and would have caused me to fall if I had not been near something that I could grab on to..Blessings to you.

I don’t think that parents ever stop worrying! In your case I can see why! I haven’t fallen out of the bed since I was a kid but I have fallen off the couch while dozing several times! One time I hurt my elbow quite badly and another I banged my head on the corner of the square coffee table. Ouch! That was sore! I would follow the advice others have given you here and go and see a doctor, you are probably fine but if I were you I would want the piece of mind of knowing for sure.

If things keep happening like that, I would definitely recommend seeing your doctor about it. It could have a lot of causes, including your diabetes, inner ear or blood pressure. Better to get it checked out before you fall somewhere and really hurt yourself.

I do not know what i would do in that situation. but bed rails might be something to look into. I am also diabetic and even though my feet bother me sometimes i have never lost feeling in my legs. Maybe you should speak to your doctor. And yes mothers worry about their children and it does not matter how old they get.

I have feel down myself once or twice. Of course I have Multiple Sclrosis. So I had to go to a chair to help myself stand back up. I have had numbness a few times myself from having M.S. but I know diabetes causes numbness also. Since both my mother and father have dibetes. I would want a bed rails myself if this happened a lot to me.

Have fallen out of bed but not in a long time - usually happened when I had re-arranged my furniture and was disoriented or something - started sleeping with a light on, small nightlight in hall or bathroom usually just enough so when I wake up I can see the light and know which direction it's ok to roll in the bed. Mom's never stop worrying - I know my Mom never will.

ouch poor thing. I use those big fat pool noodles under the fitted sheet. I actually cut it in half so it would go on both sides. It works pretty well and was only $3 at walmart.

That sounds like a worry, Twoey! For some reason, you seem to be thrashing around a lot while you are sleeping. Maybe you are eating or drinking something before you go to bed which is stopping you being still in the night? I certainly wouldn't like a baby bed or bed rails ... but I think our mothers will always worry about us, no matter how old we are. My children are all in their 20s now, but I never stop worrying about them, and never will. I hope you can find an answer to your problem and start getting a good night's sleep soon - and wake up IN the bed in the morning!

Hi twoey68, I have never been on a water bed, must be lovely, and yes I have fallen out of my bed before and hit my head on the side table, I hust turned over and didn't relize I was on the edge on the bed and fell off, I think the bed rail is better. Tamara

I have fallen out of bed before and it is no fun at all. I have also had that feeling of my leg disappearing before. I wonder, have you had that checked out by a doctor? When I had that problem, I actually had a herniated disc in my back compressing on that nerve. It didn't happen all the time, but it did happen and there really was a problem. Your falling out of bed may a little more than what you think.
