Last night Bill Clinton was on Larry King Live. Of course he was asked about the comment Carter made about the people who oppose Obama or this current congress as being "racist". Clinton agreed with Carter and took up for him.
Well Clinton lost whatever creditbility he had with me over that comment. Disagreeing with the president or our government is not racism. When I diagreed with Bush was that "racism"? Of course not.
What do you think about Clinton's statement? We also know he can be a one man gaf machine....but this one takes the cake.
What you think?

Clinton's exact quote:

"But I don't believe that all the people who oppose him on health care -- and all the conservatives -- are racists. And I believe if he were white, every single person who opposes him now, would be opposing him then."

myLot reputation of 60/100. ParaTed2k (4586)   ranked 403 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

Thanks Astonysh. This is what I've read too. I didn't see the Larry King interview though so I don't know what he might have said that wasn't covered.

myLot reputation of 76/100. lilwonders456 (1913)   ranked 60 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

Then why did he turn around and say Carter was right? And that racism is an issue with the protests and lack of support for the president?

myLot reputation of 76/100. lilwonders456 (1913)   ranked 60 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

I watched it. He did say that not EVERYONE was racist that is against him. BUt that racistm is an issue for Obama and the reason for some of outcry and lack of support.
I will try youtube and see if I find a link to it for you.

myLot reputation of 86/100. tdemex (2226)   ranked 350 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

Your all right! He hedged his comments with some are racists but not all! But either way they all would be against this proposed program! I also believe this is true, the racial issues in this country are far from over on both sides of the isle! T---

News broadcasts that I've watched this morning are doing a*great* job of editing what Clinton said to make it seem like he agreed with Carter. It makes me sick.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9217)   ranked 376 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

Lil, PLEASE don't take this the wrong way or be offended or angry but do you seriously think that racism isn't an issue AT ALL or that absolutely NONE of the outcry at the protests and rallies are motivated by race? I know YOU'RE not a racist and most of the people here at myLot aren't racists. I haven't been to any of the tea parties or town hall meetings but I doubt if more than a small minority of the people there were racists. However I don't think it can be denied that it exists if only on the fringe.

Obama pretty much dismissed the racism comments being made right and left by his fellow democrats when he went on Leno and said, "I was black BEFORE the election."I think the people who keep running their mouths about racism should just learn there is a time to shut up and quit preaching this lame message.

As long as Obama doesn't want to label it racism, that's fine with me. However, I think it is downright naieve to not belive there is some truth to Carter's statments. The guy who yelled out in congress was a conservative southerner and he yelled it at the top of his lungs. There was no mic malfunction. While I applaud the pres taking the high road on this, I'm not going to deny what I heard which was the sound of festering racism.

myLot reputation of 76/100. lilwonders456 (1913)   ranked 60 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

So was it "racism" when Reid called Bush a liar? Heck a lot of people have called Bush a liar. So what are they?

So if the congressman calling out you lie would have been black you would have been fine with it?
I am not taking up for Wilson. What he did was disrespectful and uncalled for.
But it is not "racism" to call someone a liar.
If Wilson really thought Obama or anyone in our gov. was lying than he should have held a press conference instead of acting like a heckler.
It was not racism but poor manners and poor self control. Very unprofessional and childish.

So are all conservative southererns' racist in your opinion or only the ones who disagree with the current administration?Or the ones who speak out about it? As a conservative Southerern myslef, I am curious to know.

myLot reputation of 79/100. Rollo1 (1598)   ranked 89 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

It's completely erroneous to equate calling someone out on a lie to racism. Anyone can lie, it's got nothing to do with your race or ethnic heritage. When someone lies, they say something they know is not true. When someone calls you a racist slur name, it doesn't matter what you are saying, they are just harassing you because of your race.

The other thing I hear quite often is that Wilson's a southerner. So basically, am I to understand that you believe that all southerners are racists? I suppose that's because you figure that slavery was mostly in the south. But then, so were Democrats and the Democrats were the party of slavery. So, shall we then call all Democrats racists as well?

Give it up, when you call out racism over everything all you are doing is insulting more and more groups of people based on ridiculous stereotypes, which makes you the one who is most prejudiced.

myLot reputation of 81/100. irisheyes (2931)   ranked 232 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

I just do not believe for one lousy second that any career politician is going to loose it that way over another politician's alleged lies. They are very tolerant of each other's lies. I heard the venom in that guy's voice and he shouted at the top of his lungs. There is NO way that you will convince me that that was about political lies. I do not feel that everybody who disagrees with the president is a racist but I think Rep. wilson is and I don't think Jimmy Carter was off base. SOME of the opposition to the president is rascist. 9Carter did say it all wand neither am I.) I also approve of the way the president handled it. I think that if an issue doesn't get made of it, people like this will slip up sooner or later and we'll get to see the ugly racist truth.

myLot reputation of 81/100. irisheyes (2931)   ranked 232 out of 6,357 in politics  3 months ago

Lil wonders: If Geo Bush were an African Amercan president and a member of congress with a baground of assoications with white supremists called him a liar, you're darned right I'd call him a racist. That would be a far cry from calling everyone who disagrees with the president a racist which is what you seem to be suggesting. Neither Carter nor Clinton implied that every one disagreeing with Obama is a racists but they did imply that some of them were and given their credentials (Two Southern politicians who went to the top with good civil rights records and no known alliances with racists groups), I think we should give gredence to what they say instead of criticising them. I don't care to ever become so politically correct that I'm willing to let racism slip by. It's more insidious then ever but it's still alive and well.

I know I am not remembering this exactly correctly but after the South Carolina Democrat primary, the Obama campaign accused Bill Clinton of being racist after Bill's comments about Obama doing well in South Carolina the same way Jesse Jackson did well. Now Bill has decided to join the racist grenade hurdlers. Just because Obama is black does not mean all criticism of him is racially based. When Ted Kennedy criticized Clarence Thomas did that make Ted a racist?

Because the liberal left wing party is so out of there one way or the other sooner or later some of them like Jimmy Carter,Bill Clinton, talk host,MSNBC,ABC,CBS hope to start a race war, people that get sucked in this crap are like the people that got sucked in to Obama is a black man, Obama's mother is white as the first morning snow he is not a black man, a white womb cant produce a black child in a million year's just can not be done.
Many people got rich with their plates, cups, condones and what ever with Obama's face on them them people laughed all the way to the bank.
People are down on Obama because of his socialist polices,Muslin dictators sucking love affair and he has drained what was left of our country and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

Both former Presdients carter and Clinton will never run foranything again so they are free to tell the truth. The varacity of the protest against President Obama is partialy dealing with race. I talk about what extent in my AC artcle the The Testing of Presidnt Obama. However, President put things in perspective on Letterman by saying He was black before the election. He was letting us know that the amount of racist is only a fringe element of society but their vocalness and influence goes well beyond their size. Clinton and Carter were right that ugliness of the attacks is based on race only they didnt put it in perspective.

I get awful tired of being seen as racist if I don't agree with Pres. Obama's ideas and plans.. Previous to that I was just ignorant and never do any reading or thinking!lol

I didn't see the Larry King interview but from what I've read and some of the clips I've seen he certainly never said ALL people who oppose Obama are racist. He even made the statement, which is posted in an earlier response, that those who oppose Obama's health care plan would still oppose it if Obama were white. You ask if when you disagreed with Bush was that racism; that's not even applicable here, lil. It seems like everyone is now making these apples to oranges comparisons.

I've come to the conclusion that any politician or former politician that has been in the public eye for decades and has been carefully watched and listened to nearly 24/7 for all those years is bound to become a "gaf machine". This interview is the perfect example of how something someone says (or doesn't say) can be twisted, spun and taken out of context depending on what someone wants to hear. You say here that Clinton agreed with Carter but I just heard several pundits on TV say the opposite, that he'd disagreed. Some will swear up and down Carter said everyone who opposes President Obama is racist but he didn't say anything like that, or at least that's not how I heard it.
