Does anybody read books anymore? |
|
I talk to my friends and acquaintances about books I have read or am currently reading. A few recognize the book I am talking about. A very small number may have actually read it. For the rest, they just have blank faces. I do not mean just esoteric, obscure works that are only known to a select group. I mean classics like War and Peace or A Tale of Two Cities. I know many people who are working on college degrees and several who have already received a degree who have no knowledge of any of the great works of literature. It makes me feel like a dinosaur sometimes. Newsweek recently had a special listing of the 100 greatest books. I have read 80 of them. One I missed was Winnie the Pooh. I will continue to miss that one. I read a lot of books, but it is something I can share with very few of the people I know. I feel like some sort of dinosaur. Everybody wants to "Tweet", with 140 characters or less.

| 1. evelyntan (57) | 3 weeks ago | Classics is my favourite genre. I've not yet read War and Peace, but I read A Tale of Two Cities a few years ago. I love Oscar Wilde's works, and I read Jane Austen and some of the Bronte sisters' books. Also Frances Hodgson Burnett.
One of my favourite classics is Wuthering Heights=)

| 2. calmingblue (74) | 3 weeks ago | Even though we can take messiges on tv or internet, i feel that we could't give up reading books. Reading may let us calming and absorb knowleges more carefully. Most people said they have no time to read after graduated becouse of the work or the family, i treat is an excuse. I think if you want to reading, you may find the time. Your reading is so widely, it's your virtue, then i must learn from you...

I read whatever my boyfriend loves to read too he reads fast also he reads war hammer it's kind of nerdy I haven't read it I read biography's and Anne rice and VC Andrews and the list goes on I like a lot of different things it's like watching the classics like gone with the wind. I have yet to read that book, but the movie was great can get the boyfriend to watch it I watched with my dad.Maybe I picky about who my friends are,but we like the same music and we read a lot of the same things. One of my friends place you walk in he has so many book shelves of books you's think it was a bookstore he reads even more then I do. I used to go through I'd say a book a week maybe in less time then that. I was always reading even in high school maybe not to much then school, but in the past ten years more so. I think it depends on your age maybe to. I grew up my mom made it known that reading was important my sister didn't read that much she got into sherlock holms.

4. muscles4me (8415) | 3 weeks ago | It sounds like you read much more than I do. Right now I am looking forward to Glen Becks newest book. I prefer nonfiction. It is sad that so many people would rather play video games, text or channel surf over 115 channels on their cable TV. Reading releases stress for me.

| 5. shiloh62 (29) | 3 weeks ago | I read quite often. Although the internet is fine, I can't get rid of the feeling that I am staring at a machine. I find that I can get lost in a book easier and more comfortably, and the images I develop in my mind as I follow the story are much clearer to me. Besides,it's more comfortable and relaxing to "curl up with a good book" as the saying goes. I particularly like classics and anything to do with history. I just think it's more fun to read a book.

7. dodo19 (4134) | 3 weeks ago | I love reading! It's an addiction. You cannot stop me from reading! I'm really opened to different types of literary genres. I'd have to say that my favorite genres are mysteries, detective stories, and such. They are the genres that I read most often. However, I do enjoy reading classics, biographies, poetry, and such. I really love reading different types of works and such. Ever since I was a kid, I kept on reading one book after another. It's an addiction that I haven't lost, and probably will never lose.

8. rg0205 (1726) | 3 weeks ago | I still read books. In fact, I love books. I do agree that people these days have become lazy but there are still people out there who like to read books. I've read quite a lot of books, too, not limited to fiction because I am also interested in Classics and Literature. Sometimes people say I'm a dork because I like to read those kind of stuff. Oh well. It's something I enjoy anyway.

| 9. eldeee143 (4) | 3 weeks ago | People have different likes and dislikes. I have met a lot of people and knowing what they like to do and hate to do, plus chatting most of the time with fellow students on this matter, people have different sides corresponding to the personality that they have. PEople have different personalities and that is a fact! some people would much appreciate to listenrather than to read. I myself would appreciate things if i hear and see it with my own naked eyes. No matter how i try to appreciate reading, i just cant start to fill my imagination to move and wander off. I am simply weak at imagining things while other people are really good at making their minds fly and discover millions of floating ideas while on air. It depends on nature and nurture, whether the child is taught at a younger age to appreciate reading rather than other things, or the child is taught to be good at other things.
With the people you think just tweet, I am one of them and Iguess, there are other ways to kill the cat right? good day!

10. deebomb (8937) | 3 weeks ago | Yes a lot of people are still reading books. I don't like to read books on the internet because it's not very comfortable. I like to take my books to bed to read part of the time or sit in a big comfy chair. I have a lot of different types of books I like to read. A good mystery or a historical novel. Right now I'm reading the "Covent" by James Michener. It is about South Africa from a very early time before the Dutch settled until about 1960. I like books that have some factual back ground as well as some fiction and Michner does that. He wrote books that covered sometimes generation and are very long. I have read some of the classics in the past and probably will again.

| tgillen111791 (6) | 3 weeks ago | I think it comes down to the matter of time. In the ever changing world it feels like all of us lose time. I'm a full time student and work part time so I hardly ever have any free time to read for my own enjoyment. I get tired of all the reading I have to do at school and then get tired after working that I'm just not in the mood to sit down and read and many times I'm way too tired to look at the page and not fall asleep.
I wish I had more free time so I could read as I really miss it but in the changing world it seems like priorities change and everything gets busier.:\
