Where were your kids last night at midnight? |
|
Last night we went out for dinner and to the casino. We came home and I got on my friend Michael's radio show. He plays a lot of what my father-in-law called loud, rotten music, not really my type of music, but I like the company. Anyway, it was just after midnight and he was playing the last song of the evening from some metal band that I had never heard of, when boom, the power goes out.
So after we look around, we realize that our house is the only house that doesn't have power and Richard goes outside to check out the switch box. Well surprise, one switch is flipped one direction and all the other switches are flipped the other way. He comes in the house and says, "get your cell phone and be prepared to call 911 in case this turns out to be a home invasion." So I stood there, phone in hand as we went back out to turn on the power.
Well, that was it. The power went back on. Nobody was around. Probably just some high school kids playing a prank. Scared us half to death though. Where were your kids last night?

1. xfahctor (5105) | 3 weeks ago | I know it wasn't mine...they would have cut it off at the pole by remote device....or by a highly trained squad of covert op squirrels. WEll, at midnight my youngest daughter was upstairs in her room studying for a class and yackin on her cell phone, winding down from a busy night at work. The others, who the heck knows, they all live out of state on their own now.

6. purplealabaster (678) | 3 weeks ago | That is really scary. Our switches are either inside the main part of the house or there are a few in the cellar. There is an outside entrance to the cellar that we don't keep locked, but you have to get past our doggies to get to it, so we are not worried about that. I would definitely not want our switches to be outside where somebody could turn them off, even if it was only a prank.
By the way, both of my kids were home sleeping last night, although admittedly not in the same house.

mysticmaggie (221) | 3 weeks ago | Put a lock on that power box! It could have very well been a prowler or it may have just tripped on its own, but why be sorry when you can be safer?
We owned a rental condo with the power box outside. Our first move was to put a lock on the box. We noticed we had the only box without a lock. Keep the key in a drawer in your kitchen and have extras made for your keychains. That way you're never looking for the key if a circuit trips itself.
Happy to hear you are okay!
| |
|
|
purplealabaster (678) | 3 weeks ago | Mysticmaggie, that is a really good suggestion about putting a lock on the box and having several keys for it that are in convenient locations. It is entirely possible that the circuit was overloaded and tripped itself, but as you stated why take that chance. I know that our circuits have been tripped every once in a while, but it doesn't happen often, so we are not sure exactly what caused it.

dawnald (9466) | 2 weeks ago | I bet even a pool lock (where you don't need a key or a combination) would confound any trouble makers after dark.

7. paintswithwords (242) | 3 weeks ago | Well my kids aren't kids any more and I doubt they would be playing pranks...lol
Our box is on the outside too. Can't you put a lock on it. Were you using more appliances than usual. Sometimes ours is triggered when I run the vacuum and I have too many other appliances on like the iron at the same time.
Be kind of spooky to think it could be a prankster, or worse a home invasion. I would find a way to lock it up.
| |
| |
|
|
dawnald (9466) | 3 weeks ago | No appliances at all, just a few lights and two computers. I'm sure it was kids. I suppose we could put a lock on it.

9. savypat (7550) | 3 weeks ago | I hope you let your kids know just how scary that was and that it isn't funny at all. There are just to many bad things that go on in the world now for those types of tricks. If you tell them that you thought about calling the cops and then the stupid kids that pulled the trick would be in real trouble. I always use these types of things to teach lessons to my kids, maybe I can save them some grief later on when they might be temped to do something stupid like this.
