Some "circulation dept" trying to get hold of the former roommate and getting the roomie. She tells them she doesn't live here anymore, they hang up and call back.
She demands a supervisor, they hang up and call back.
NATURALLY they don't give her any info on what company they're with or how to get in touch with their main office.
SUPPOSEDLY, they'll take you off their list within 72 hours if you call them back and press 1. You press 1 and it hangs up on you.
Well, she looked up the number and found its a reported scam number.

I have been on reciving end of a few phone scams myself. for me it is mostly persons wanting to sell me magizines. they call me and tell me that my subscritions are getting ready to expire or I have some extention that I must pay and they want to chage my creidit cards for it. the thing is, my magizines are payed up by another service and I do not owe anything at all. I was scamed out of $100.00 once by one of these services one but I was fourtantal able to cancel after I called their number.

I complained aobut the serice, never got the confomatio letter nor the mags. the person I talked too said that they had lots of problems with persons not getting the letters nor mags. I never got my money back either, I latter canceled the card and I have since payed it off.

It's getting so that you can't trust anyone, isn't it? I won't even answer my door most times now, unless there's a UPS truck or FedEx out front. I bought a book in October from a young salesperson and found it later I probably threw away my money and the book will never come. It was one of the rare days that I was a bit lonely and I saw no harm in letting her in. I'll know better and not answer the door from now on.
Thanks for the heads up.

Ya know...when I first got my new number, I was getting calls every day for some guy named Steve Sparks and it was always automated message left on my answering machine. Once, an actual person called and I happened to be home to pick up the phone. She asked to speak to the guy and I told her I never heard of him and that I just aquired my new number a week before the calls started for him. I told her to please take my number off their list or I'm gonna fill out a police report for harassment. She did and all calls stopped...for a month. Now they are slowly starting back up again so going to start taking down dates and times of calls for when I make out the report. We also were getting calls where noone would say anything at the other end but you can tell there is someone there listening. I started writing down dates and times for that as well but they stopped after a while. We feel it was his brother during one of his drunken binges just trying to get a rise outta us which didn't work.

back in the late 1970's and early 1980's we had a phone number and this person was giving out our number - she apparently worked in a bar.
she was giving 477-#### instead of 447-#### - but we twice got honest wrong numbers for her and that was how we got her real number - so, after a really harassing night of calls from a drunk, the former roomie called her real number.
She got a guy on the phone - she asked for "Shamaha" or however you would spell it - and when he said she wasn't there - she asked him to tell her to stop giving out our number to her "boyfriends." They STOPPED COLD after that!

I hope that you will report the scam to the FTC. They have a crew that investigates scams like that, and they will prosecute when they catch the people. It seems like everyday there is a new scam used on people who aren't bright enough to not fall for them.

i always met this situation: somebody called me but not waited for getting through, they would hange up.If i call back the cell phone no he use, i will be charged...
The terrible thing is they use some internet tools, which the cell phone no shows on your cell phone is from public departments, such like 911,110...you must think there is something emergency happan, and call back without hesitate, and you will be scamed again...
A friend told me that the list of phonebook should be as easy as possible, a name and a phone no is enough, not show many informtions such like "mom'"dearing"...if one day you lost your cell phone, the fraud is easily to get your information.
So, take care , everybody!

That's scary. And it sounds like harassment.

I had just about the same situation and demanded a supervisor and
'they hung up then called again, so I just hung up and it rang again I just let it ring. I surmised it was some kind of scam.then I called my best friend and my son to be sure that they had not phoned me and neither had so it was the same people.

I've worked collections before and if you have a legitimate debt that needs to be paid you should first contact in writing. The people that call never have the information and bait you into giving it to them. Most people want to be helpful and they prey on those kinds.

Thanks for the info, elic. Old saying 'u can't get blood out of a turnip' so they would be shocked at my lack of money, lol.
