Obama and teh dems in washington have agreed to continue the healthcare debate.....behind closed doors. SO much for a "new" transparacy in our government and how it works. This is an important bill that will effect ALL of us. So don't we have a right to know what is being discussed and what is being agreed too not only as the whole process plays out but also BEFORE it goes for a vote so we have a chance to have our say on wether we even want this "plan" they come up with or not?
Why are we getting purposely getting left out of the loop on this one? What are they hiding? What don't they want us to know til it is too late?
What are your thoughts on the "secret" healthcare talks?

The secret healthcare talks aren't the only thing being discussed behind closed doors. They want to be able to make a decision that will benefit them more than us, not something that is good for us. As long as everyone just goes along with the gov't does and lets them do it, they will be the ones that come out on top, not the citizens, the way it was meant to be.

I agree. THey don't want us to know how bad the deal is until it is too late for us to do anything about it. If it was a great bill that would actually help us the average person they would let us see it and know what is going on.

It's disgusting and I'm sick of people defending these crooks. I don't know how people can so blindly support a bill they know nothing about and politicians who make it their mission to keep their own constituents in the dark.

You'd think there would be more anger after Obama lied through his teeth about televising this on CSPAN, but his supporters just don't care. Sure, he lied. Sure, his transparency was a joke, but hey, he's cool and insults Bush a lot so I'm sure it'll work out.

My thoughts on the "secret" healthcare talks is simple. They wouldn't be secret if it were something good. Bills wouldn't be over 2,000 pages long if they weren't trying to hide what's on page 1,632.

I know most people just don't care enough to see what our politicians are doing, but for those of us that do care, we should have unfettered access to EVERYTHING discussed regarding the bills that will affect us with the sole exception of things that would compromise national security.

jmowreader (67)   ranked 1,078 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

You supported the PATRIOT Act, didn't you? Bush and his minions pulled out this huge, unreadable bill, told Congress "if you do not vote Aye on this I will tell your constituents you're unpatriotic and destroy your political career" and demanded an up-or-down vote on it.

And if you've ever tried to read the PATRIOT Act you'll see what a really disgusting bill is: most of it is "In line 3 of the fifth paragraph of chapter 6, 18 US Code 405, strike the word "not." So now you've got to dig out 18 USC 405, find chapter 6, and go to line 3 of the fifth paragraph to find that Bush wants "police will not have the authority to kick down your door at three in the morning" changed to "police will have the authority." (Which also explains why the PATRIOT Act is 350 pages long instead of 2500 pages long--the meat of the Act is in the 108 sections of the US Code the PATRIOT Act amends.)

"You supported the PATRIOT Act, didn't you?"

No, I didn't. The PATRIOT Act was a piece of unconstitutional garbage which Obama ALSO supports and wants to EXTEND. So now that your crap assumption and "Bush did it too" garbage is out of the way, go ahead and try to tell me how I'm wrong.

myLot reputation of 72/100. matersfish (2665)   ranked 158 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

It's hard on my stomach to see this.

If you even slightly disagree with anything Obama and-or any other liberal politician does, then you MUST have agreed 100% with everything Bush did, so neener!

Borrowing that weak logic from a$$hats at MSNBC and the liberal blogosphere trolls is one thing, but to actually read someone's discussion, someone's response, click a button, write it out, and click two more buttons just to repeat it is another entirely.

It's scary.

myLot reputation of 73/100. bobmnu (4815)   ranked 222 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

Maybe Ron Paul had it right if you can't give me a bill of 1 or 2 pages and show me in the Constitution where you have the power to do this then I won't sign it. If we ever get to read the Health Care bill we will see that it contains the same "see page 3, par 4, sub par 3, letter c" type language.

jmowreader (67)   ranked 1,078 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

jmowreader knows two things about diplomatic immunity:

1. There are 184 embassies operating in the Washington Metro Area. Every foreign country in the world with the exception of the handful of rogue states we don't have diplomatic relations with has one.

2. Embassies are nothing more than spy stations. Every one of them, without exception, has spies in it working against the country they're in, and they've all got diplomatic immunity.

I think I feel a LITTLE safer about people from Interpol running around with diplomatic immunity than I do with the Cuban DGI resident or the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence resident running around with it.

It's unconstitutional, I believe. One reporter who actually had some b$lls asked Pelosi about it and she was just incredulous. Said something about a lot of things were promised in the campaign and then trailed off.

Time to vote them out!! I hope people don't forget all these offenses against them, all the misrepresentation and the disdain they have for us. We need to hold onto these feelings until November, at least!

This healthcare bill has nothing to do with "national" security so it should be open and I mean completely open for the american people to see the WHOLE process.

Are you really surprised, though? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

They don't want people to know about the bill, because if we actually can see what's going on, it may decrease the chances of them being elected after they cram it down our throats - and I'm fully convinced that jamming it down our throats is what they plan to do.

The best lie ever told was "change".

myLot reputation of 83/100. lilwonders456 (3526)   ranked 34 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

I agree. I fully exspect not to fully know what is in the bill untill after it is voted on and too late to do anything about. It will be crammed down our throats wether we like it or not.
Which is bad for us. And I hope costs ALL of them their jobs come re-election.

Hi lilwonders456, I'll try not to bash too much cause I didn't vote for Obama. The proposed health care plan forces people to purchase something whether they want it or not. It makes a mockery of our so-called democracy and our constitution. Obama's ratings are falling more quickly than previous "failed Presidents". I use that description because never before has the American way of life been threatened as it is today. We can not fear the government and consider ourselves a free nation. So we move toward socialism. Less choices we can make for ourselves. The problem with socialism is we will run out of other peoples money that socialism requires to function successfully, if there is such a thing. I guess they had to close the doors, or we might know more than they want us to know.

Actually President Obama had nothing to do with this agreement about how to complete the health care debate. I don't THINK the details of the format for these meetings have been finalized yet so there's a possibility it may be in part televised on C-SPAN. However they do it, they will be far from "secret" talks since I've heard assurances there will be frequent updates made public and put online. They'll first be discussing the House bill, which has been online for several months now. Any changes to either version will be made public. Anyway, before whatever they come up with comes up for a vote for final passage it will be debated and will be available online.

I just wanted to add that, although I know I won't be met with much agreement here on myLot, I truly believe the Democrats' hands were forced in this. The Republicans had publicly stated their determination to defeat ANY bill; Demint spoke of it being the President's "Waterloo" and proclaimed it would bring him down and Gregg wrote an entire "How To" newsletter which was followed to the letter to block and delay the bill. I'm not going to argue the point but I think the President reached out to the Republicans from the beginning and the Senate Finance Committee wasted weeks trying to appease just ONE member of the opposition and she's not going to vote for final passage anyway.

I do hold them responsable, all of congress. All the oposition to each other is nothing more than political theater. The dems want to look like heros, the republicans want to look like genuine heartfelt people's oposition....BOTH are full of shytte.
But it doesn't make the crime of the comgressional majority leadership of conducting their business in secret any less loathsome...it's wrong...period. YOu and I both know damn well nothing good is going on behind those doors and that none of it has anythng to do with being kind hearted and offering every american the ability to pay for their healthcare.
If Obama had a spine though he would stand up to the dictateress and refuse to take part in any further discusions on it untill the process is opened as he promised.

myLot reputation of 83/100. xfahctor (7620)   ranked 42 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

In fact, if he really meant it, he would threaten to veto any bill unless the debate on it was done publicly.

myLot reputation of 60/100. Taskr36 (6781)   ranked 284 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

"there's a possibility it may be in part televised on C-SPAN"

LOL, yeah, there's also a possibility that Obama will dress like a chicken and dance in front of the White House, but that's no more likely to happen than any of their backroom dealings being televised on C-SPAN. When Gibbs was asked about Obama's promise the other day he flat out refused to answer the question.

"I've heard assurances there will be frequent updates made public and put online."

I have to hand it to you Annie, you sure are a true believer. Do you still believe Obama's assurances regarding lobbyists, transparency, C-SPAN, and the round table with doctors and insurance companies?

"I truly believe the Democrats' hands were forced in this."

How EXACTLY were Democrats FORCED to hide their negotiations from the public. We'll pretend for a moment that Republicans would have made the debate impossible somehow if they were not shut out. How does that force the Democrats to not allow C-SPAN cameras to watch them in their closed door deals and bribes?

"the Senate Finance Committee wasted weeks trying to appease just ONE member of the opposition"

I know, they must be so angry that she couldn't be bought with a $300,000,000 bribe like Nelson and Landrieu.

"In fact, if he really meant it, he would threaten to veto any bill unless the debate on it was done publicly."

Come on X. He already threatened, excuse me, PROMISED to veto bills loaded with earmarks, while he has basically laughed (or had Gibbs do the laughing) at Republicans who call on him to keep his promise regarding bills with thousands of earmarks. What I'm saying is that talk is cheap. Obama just tells people what they want to hear.

myLot reputation of 83/100. lilwonders456 (3526)   ranked 34 out of 3,985 in politics  3 years ago

annie,
I feel this is one of the most important bills of this session. It has NO bearing on national security so ALL of it should be done on the floor and televised for the american people to see. This bill is too important to cut the american people out of the process. Nor should we tolerate being shut out of it.
I don't trust them to make a good much less decent deal. None of them. Not unless they KNOW everything they say and do are matter of public record and that the voting american public are watching every more they make.
I don't want "updates" (propragenda and spin by both sides). I want to be able to turn on C-span and actually see for myself what is going on and by who. That would cut the BS down going on by both sides. If America is watching.....well the want to get re-elected so they will behave better.
Plus it gives the american public the chance to have our voice heard BEFORE it is voted on. It is not their job to dictate to us how we will live...we dictate to them how we will live. Don't forget that. We are the boss...not them.

Obviously it's all part of a way to keep the machines of the capitalist corporation run government going. Without something huge to fix things, we're going to be grinding to a halt through recession (no matter how many news reports they make saying things are looking up).

I don't want a government run health care system. Other countries that have health care for all don't have government run health care (like Canada).

I really would like health care support, not just for myself, but for many, many other Americans who get sick and die every year because they have been financially forsaken. However, I don't know how much it's worth the costs of all of our identities. They already have us all under their thumbs tightly with the Social Security Administration (Colin Powell admitted on a talk show that if other countries had a Social Security Administration they could track and catch their political criminals like America does). This will all tie into the "terrorists is everywhere" plan, after it gets done with the "line the pockets of the already filthy rich and murderous insurance companies" plan.

I mean, not to sound paranoid. hahaha. But honestly, every time they make a breaking news story about anything of importance on the news concerning our freedoms and privacies not just being threatened, but taken away completely by our own people, some celebrity somewhere does something outrageous that they have to cover for 150% more time. Distraction?

This bill is so good they want it to be a surprise. My question is if there is so much support for health care reform then why does it have to be done in secret? Wouldn't you want let everyone see how this crowning achievement of success was created? The secrecy of this bill tell me that the people of Washington D.C knows that this bill is not popular but they have the numbers. So they will just shove this bill right down the throats of everyone.
