Is this morally right?  

It's ethically bad for the practitioner, catastrophic for the child, but the mother is happy...

In Europe women as old as 60 have given birth. At 54 I wouldn't, but some famous men in their 70's have become fathers. Do your morals apply here too? Cf Recent British and European newspapers

I feel it is the woman's choice to have the baby if she so desires and has the means to take care of it. There are a lot of senior citizens that can work circles around many 20 year olds, so it depends on the woman and not necessarily her age.

Now I do have a problem with the ethics of this type of pregnancy if there are artificial means to establish a pregnancy in a woman of this age group. If the pregnancy were totally natural then I have no problem with it.

If the ladies of this age group are paying for the IVF treatment themselves, rather than using NHS money, then I have no problem with it. The life expectancy of women has now risen dramatically, and say a woman gives birth at the age of 58, she could live on to be 88 or even older. Personally at the age of 31 I am exhausted with my two children, but if the woman feels she is healthy and capeable at the age of 58, then why not let her become a parent.Her older age doesn't mean she will be anything less than an excellent mother.

Actually, yes...many ladies of age are capable of taking care of new babies. There are many of us that take care of our grandchildren at this age and older. I am 53 and I have had at least 2 of my grandchildren living with me since they were born. If I can take care of them I certainly could take care of my own baby.
Many of the ladies I know at an older age can care for babies and children. Why not let them or help them have a child of their own.
For many ladies the new medical things available now allow them to opportunity to finally have a baby of their own.

At age 55, and taking care of my 2.5 year old granddaughter five days per week, I could not imagine wanting to go through pregnancy again. That being said, if I could not conceive naturally, I would have tried the adoption route because there are so many unwanted children out there, why not give them a home rather than fill up the planet with more people?

I agree with you that not all possible medical help are moral. I don't know if a woman can be able to take care of a child but I think that the woman is still capable. 58 is not yet the age where a woman can no longer lift a finger to take care of a child. So if the woman can conceive at 58 with God's permission, then I believe that God can give strength for the woman to take care. Sarah, in the Old Testament times bear a child at 75.

I think its totally ridiulous for any women to have a child over 50 and thats pushing it. These women who are doing this are being very selfish I believe. There has been a few others in their 60s having babies. How cruel can someone be. Do they think they will be there to enjoy their child when they are graduating from high school or college. There was one who gave birth to twins after pretending to be 55 years old she was really 66 years old she gave birth later that year. Two years later she died of cancer and now the twins are orphans at the age of two.

hi ronaldinu at 58 I had a lot of energy and would have been able to handle a small child, In fact here in the US we often find grandmothers caring for their grandchildren so that the parents can work. but what worries me is that after thirty it becomes so chancy of having a normal birth, e ven at 32 I had one pregnancy that was fine, but the next I had a brain damage baby. the odds get worse as you go up the age scale and at 58 its very chancy for a normal baby. Too many birth defects happen in the 40 ties and fifty ties and it becomes wrong I think to bear a child at that age. why not adopt instead.
