Another three audacties by the republican party .... AGAIN  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)   ranked 585 out of 3,985 in politics 2 years ago

Today I was watching CSPAN televising two bills being discussed about recognizing veterans of Iwo Jima and of the Cold War.

Audacity number one - while the democrats were honouring the veterans, the republicans used each opportunity to bring up the healthcare vote, which they will be debating tomorrow. The democrats were polite, acknowledged that there will be some debate which they will do tomorrow, but right now, they were there to discuss fallen heroes, and those who survived as prisoners of war.

Time and time again, at least ten times in the hour I was watching, the republican party dishonoured the veterans by constantly bringing up their distate for the healthcare bill.

----

Audacity number two - the proposer of the bill # 925 said something so important: During George W Bush's reign, the VA ran out of money the last June he worked. The democrats did everything they could to get money for the veterans, I think in the sum of a $2 billion bill. One republican sided with them, and all the other republicans stripped him of his chairmanship.

Now, the republicans are crying some bs lies about this universal healthcare coverage cutting care for our veterans. The nerve! They expect us to ignore history, and truly think we are a dumbed down nation, falling prey to the boob tube, and video games, and movies, etc.

----

Audacity number three - even after asking a seventh time that the republicans concentrate only on the veteran bill, they continued on with the debate about healthcare, despite that debate being scheduled for tomorrow. (Still dishonouring the veterans they claim to care so much about).

One rethug said that the healthcare bill would cut out funding for mris and catscans.

So, finally, a Californian representative said, "We asked you to wait for the debate, but you want a debate - you got it. You are absolutely correct that MRIs and Catscans will not be funded for doctors who own the machines. That is to eliminate fraud.

Anyone who watched the 7 hour health care summit would know that one of the chief concerns of the republicans was fraud such as the aforementioned. So, they fight their own cause, and again, are obviously stretching the truth, so those who are just tuning in, and are dumbed down don't know that it is a complete lie.

One other democrat said that the veterans wonder why it takes so long to get a past due medal or disability check or something of that sort. And he answered honestly - it's the republicans holding us up, again.

The republicans need to do their job. Their role in that debate about the veteran bill was to discuss veterans. NOT the healthcare debate, which will be discussed tomorrow.

Absolutely disgusting behaviour, but not unexpected on their side. And their following tend to be the ones who favour watching Beavis and Butthead to CSpan, so the people voting them in are never exposed to what jerks they are. It's a brilliant scheme they have got going on.

Good, I'm glad they kept bringing it back to the subject at hand and what is most important. The veteran's issue will wait. And the democrats are pushing the healthcare bill without any debate or the wishes of the American people.

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)   ranked 585 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

1 - They have a scheduled debate and appropriate platform for the healthcare bill tomorrow. Tonight's discussion was about honouring veterans, and the republicans did them a disservice by taking the focus off the topic at hand, knowing their own schedule, and knowing they have the time slotted for the healthcare debate tomorrow. Their tactics are highly inappropriate, in poor form, and childish.

2 - You honestly think that people who would die and have died to protect your freedoms should "wait"? That says a lot about you.

myLot reputation of 97/100. hofferp (2894)   ranked 23 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

The Democrats could have waited a day longer to discuss veterans issues. I see it as nothing more than another maneuver by the Democrats to shut down debate. The time they have allocated for debate tomorrow is b.s. And I'll tell you what it says about me, as the daughter of a WWII veteran, who opposes this bill, as do I, it says I'm fed up with the Democratic maneuvering going on to pass this bill.

myLot reputation of 75/100. irishidid (3461)   ranked 839 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

You support a guy who wouldn't think twice about aborting his own grandchildren. What does that say about YOU?

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)   ranked 585 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

hofferp - I am willing to guess that this veteran bill has been on the schedule for some time now. Things get scheduled, much like when people go to court, they go in a scheduled time. Some people may feel their case has more of a priority factor, but, once its on calendar in a certain order, it is there. Does that mean the prosecution and the defense talk about the second case when the first is being heard?

irishidid - It says about ME, that when you are talking about a MAN aborting HIS grandchildren, that I have the knowledge to realize this hypothesis is a physical impossibility. A man can not carry a fetus, certainly not that of his own grandchild. And his kids are what - elementary age? They are not even ovulating yet.

So - are you trying to say that Obama is in support of women's reproductive rights?

myLot reputation of 75/100. irishidid (3461)   ranked 839 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

You knew exactly what I meant. I was willing to enter this debate with respect for your opinion but YOU were the one who got nasty about it. Keep supporting a liar, see how far it gets you in the end.

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)   ranked 585 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Did I misinterpret something you said, or sling an insult your way? I was basically translating what you said. You said you were glad that the republicans discounted the work and sacrifices made by our soldiers and fallen heroes, and suggested that a debate that is already on schedule should preempt honouring these veterans. In fact, you said this veteran issue should wait.

So, when our military now goes to fight for your freedoms, perhaps they should view your freedoms the same way you view their issues - they should wait, as there are more pressing matters to discuss. Keeping in mind that the discussion of the "more pressing matter" was already on the roster.

I never did support W or any member of the GOP. Ergo, I never supported a liar.

We currently have the most transparent administrator in office.

Thanks to him, I just may see my fellow hard-working citizens secure themselves some healthcare. That'll get our country pretty far.

HI, I'm the wife of a Viet Nam veteran and have been for over 27years.
I find it difficult to believe that any American who has lived a decent life
with a family and has the privileges of a home food in their guts and being FREE in our land of the FREE---would want to take away ANY privileges of a Veteran. If it were not for our boys in all wars none of us would have the privileges of freedom we have now. They didn't just fight for themselves, they fought for you and me and uncle John and their school teachers and their own children as well as all children and some of them could be the republicans who are clamoring to dishonor or boys now---
Yes , our boys died for those who are now choosing to dishonor them . It's such a shame-----------

A Veteran is a man who put himself in the line of fire for whatever war he was fighting in and to be taken down by a bunch of dumb politicians gripes me.
They are only going along with this to save their own hides and to save face with Obama--
I am sure that tomorrow will determine the fate of our veterans which includes my husband.

I for one have fought for my husband's care along with other veteran's care and believe me they deserve every advantage and benefits they can get.
Our soldiers signed a contract with our govenment saying they would be the recipients of health care at any VA in our country for the rest of their lives and now to be made an issue of cuz there are so many battered and crippled men is a disgrace. How do these politicians think our boys became crippled or vegetables in the first place?? not by playing golf with politicians !!

A contract should be abided by and with what our veterans are looking at now is a breech of promise to them.

I am so disapointed in our government officials. It's just sickens me.
thanks for letting me rant and believe me I have ooodles more to say but not tonight.
Thanks and God bless,

I am hoping things work out to everyone's advantage.

I wish to extend my thank you to your husband and your family for the time served protecting future generations.

I appreciate your kindness and we are both proud to have protected all generations.
It's every man, woman and child's place to put their best foot forward in protecting our freedoms.
MY husband's endeavors are mirrored by millions of American soldiers who have also fought for all our next generations and we would not be the proud country we are wihtout our Veterans.
I do hope all see that veterans have paid a dear price for the freedoms we enjoy.
And, by the way, one of our freedoms is being able to convey our fears, our loves and other emotions on a site such as mylot :)
Take care and pray today goes in our veteran's favor.
God Bless every veteran.
God Bless you too !!
Thanks again !

In a typical politicians way of doing business the funding for the VA included an amendment to set a withdrawal date from Iraq. Nothing to do with the bill. There was also another attempt to change the funding for the GI Bill by not allowing GI to use the bill if they are in the Military. They had to totally sever their relationship with the military.

Congressman Ron Paul said that he would only sing bills that were one or two pages and dealing with a single issue and a reference in the bill showing where in the US Constitution Congress has the authority for such a law. He felt that was the way protect the American people.

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)   ranked 585 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

President Obama is trying to pass a bill where he can employ line item vetoes. Things get piggybacked into one bill, which is what has slowed our progress in pulling out of the two wars.

myLot reputation of 60/100. Taskr36 (6781)   ranked 284 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Line item vetoes are wrong and should NOT be allowed. It gives the executive branch too much power and can ruin bills, especially if the president and congress are from different parties which they may be after the November elections. Nope, the president needs to deal with bills as they are written.

Bobmnu, you are right of course. Republicans only voted against VA funding on the one bill where a withdrawal date was part of it.

Politicians are pretty much the same all over the world.
When I watch the Australian Senate on television, it is total mayhem.
You get better behaviour in a kindergarten class of 5 years old.

Politicians are a bunch of parasites and a disgrace to society, in the way they behave. Unfortunately, there is no solution to the problem. If we try to restrain them, they will cry that the leading party is trying to censor them.

It is a game that all parties have learned to play. It is about being the one shouting the louder and making a nuisance of himself, to gain the headline in the news of the day.

myLot reputation of 51/100. ladybugmagic (896)   ranked 585 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Well said! What kind of parliamentary system is in place in Australia? How many parties, is there a strong divide, etc?

myLot reputation of 83/100. Aussies2007 (3394)   ranked 852 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

We have two major party like in the UK. Labor and Liberal.
Labor is supposed to be for the working class, and it is the party which has structured our social and health system.
Liberal support the rich by reducing their taxes and making the working class pay.

So what happen is...
Labor comes into power, and spend the surplus the Liberal have saved by being scrooges. Labor spend the money on health, infrastructure, and raise the elderly people's pension like they did 6 months ago.

The Liberal come into power and stop all spending. They start saving to repay Labor's debt.

These days people say that there is very little difference between the 2 party. And in many ways it is true. But the working class still suffers under Liberal while the rich gets richer.

In some ways, our Liberal would be your Republicans.
And our Labor, your democrats.
Except that our Liberals don't have a constitution which give them the power to get away with murder.

Besides that, we have half a dozen small party, but they don't have the money to win an election. Only the two major party can win. So before the election, the small party tell the people to which major party their vote will go to.
Quite often the major party win the election because of the votes of the small party. Like John Howard from the Liberal, who won an election with only 36% of the votes, but had the votes of the small party to take him over 50%.

It has always seem like a crazy and unjust system to me. But that is the way it is. At least we vote in Australia. lol
They made voting compulsory decades ago.
If you don't vote, you get a fine.
But it is better to vote, than not vote and whinge. lol

However, the small party has some power. It can win seats in the Senate by winning within their electoral boundaries. Once in the Senate, they can block the government policies if they don't like them.

"It's the Republicans holding us up again." That's a statement that could be made a dozen times a day every day! That's all they know - disrupt, obstruct and repeat their same talking points over and over again no matter what the issue is they're supposed to be discussing. They talk out of both sides of their mouths at every turn. "The "Democrat" bill (they spitefully refuse to use the proper term, Democratic, making themselves sound stupid and ignorant!) will cut Medicare by billions" on one hand and then "We must cut entitlement spending (Medicare and Social Security) on the other. Then there's "Many of the uninsured people are eligible for Medicaid but they don't apply" versus "The health care bill will put more people on Medicaid which we can't afford". They don't want what they want, if that makes any sense at all. They like to pass themselves off as the great patriots who love their country while they're doing everything in their power to prove they don't care about many of the PEOPLE that make and have made our country great, including our veterans. They have one concern and one concern only - to destroy and defeat the Democrats and especially a Democratic President they refuse to accept!

This healthcare bill is a HUGE betrayal to my husband and millions of veterans.

http://ow.ly/1p4dn

"“The president and the Democratic leadership are betraying America's veterans,” said Thomas J. Tradewell Sr., a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran from Sussex, Wis., who leads the 2.1 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.

“And what makes matters worse is the leadership and the president knows the bill is flawed, yet they are pushing for passage today like it’s a do-or-die situation. This nation deserves the best from their elected officials, and the rush to pass legislation of this magnitude is not it.”

At issue is H.R. 4872 does not fully protect the healthcare programs provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the military’s Tricare system. Specifically, the bill covers Tricare For Life but not the other Tricare programs that serve millions of beneficiaries; it does not cover children suffering from spina bifida as a result of a parent’s exposure to Agent Orange; and it does not cover dependents, widows and orphans who are served by CHAMPVA, the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs."

My husband got this in his email the other day:

• At the national Veterans of Foreign Wars conference Aug. 17, Obama made similar statements that there will be no reduction in Medicare benefits. Reducing Medicare costs would come from reducing fraud and abuse.

On March 3, Congress passed emergency legislation delaying the 21.2 percent decrease in Medicare reimbursement rates for an additional 30 days. The TRICARE Management Activity greatly appreciates Congress' swift action as it allowed more time to fully evaluate the impact the decrease in Medicare reimbursement rates will have on the TRICARE program.

Whatever the outcome, TRICARE will take at least 30 days to fully understand the impact on TRICARE and take appropriate action. While federal law requires TRICARE reimbursement rates to be equal to Medicare rates to the extent practical, the law does permit TRICARE to make exceptions to ensure an adequate network of providers or to eliminate a situation of severely impaired access to care.

More information about this legislation and its impact on TRICARE will be posted on the TRICARE.mil website as soon as it becomes available.

cain, one of the first things I did when this bill became available online was to look for anything related to veterans because, as you know, my husband is a disabled Vietnam vet and I'm currently covered by CHAMPVA.

On page 333, line 16 (v), the bill specifies "the veteran's health care program under Chapter 17 of Title 38 of the United States Code." as one of the government sponsored programs. If you look at Title 38, SUBCHAPTER VIII - HEALTH CARE OF PERSONS OTHER THAN VETERANS you'll find 38 USC 1781 - Medical care for survivors and dependents of certain veterans. This bill does nothing to change the U.S. code. While it does not mention CHAMPVA or the other programs that are currently supported, it does indicate early on that veteran's health care includes them. I saw nothing that specifically excluded them. I didn't research TRICARE because there are several things I'm looking at in the bill and, as you know, it's huge.

myLot reputation of 48/100. sndcain36 (2691)  2 years ago

http://www.naus.org/news/news_tricare.html

3/19/10 - House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-MO) intends to introduce legislation to explicitly state in law that TRICARE meets all of the health care requirements currently under consideration by Congress for individual health insurance. Although the health care reform legislation passed by the House explicitly exempted TRICARE from being affected, the Senate bill did not include such specific language presuming that existing IRS Code language is sufficient protection for TRICARE, and the parliamentary rules of the reconciliation process underway this weekend did not allow for the inclusion of the House language that specifically protects TRICARE. Skelton said he will also include the language in the FY2011 National Defense Authorization Act.

They have left the door open here. If there isn't specific language written into the bill they could easily change the rules at a later date.

And further down,

No TRICARE Fee Hikes in 2011 Budget, But…
2/3/10 - TRICARE beneficiaries will face no fee hikes in 2011, assuming Congress approves that part of the President’s budget request, as NAUS expects. However, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a Pentagon news briefing that he wants to work with Congress to find ways to control rising military healthcare costs that are absorbing an increasing percentage of the defense budget (officials estimate that health care costs will grow from around 6% of the budget now to more than 10% by 2015). "We absolutely want to take care of our men and women in uniform and our retirees," Gates said, "But at some point, there has to be some reasonable tradeoff between reasonable cost increases or premium increases or co-pays or something and the cost of the program." He added, "I ask anybody to point me to a health insurance program that has not had a premium increase in 15 years," referring to the fact that TRICARE premiums have not changed since 1995. The Secretary admitted that TRICARE benefits are and should be generous, but compared the $1,200 average out-of-pocket costs for a family of three under TRICARE to about $3,300 for the same family under a health maintenance organization plan in the Federal Employees Health Care Program. "We see a lot of people coming back into TRICARE because the benefits are so good and the costs are so low," he said.

I know political double speak when I hear it. He's telling you what a great deal we already have to prepare us for an eventual rate increase. You can bet on it.

The VFW clearly sees this as a betrayal and I trust them a hell of a lot more than I trust Pelosi and 0bama. Neither of them give a damn about the military.

myLot reputation of 48/100. sndcain36 (2691)  2 years ago

Doctors already complain about the low reimbursement rates Medicare pays, and in some cases, this causes doctors to limit the number of Medicare patients they treat. With the linkage of TRICARE For Life with Medicare (Part B), this affects TFL beneficiaries. If cuts proceed, the American Medical Association asserts that many more doctors would be forced to limit acceptance of TFL/Medicare patients, or even stop seeing current patients. The potential adverse impact on TRICARE For Life is clear if the Medicare reimbursement rate cuts take effect – less access to health care providers.

sndcain -

I don't know if I have properly thanked you for the work your husband has done in protecting all of our families, but I would like to.

I don't have enough details verbatim as to what will happen with the veterans, outside of the fact that the democrats are the ones who have always fought to preserve veterans benefits while the republicans fought against it.

In the cspan video I linked to taskr, it shows a very saddening debate about honouring our heroes, and the republicans doing what they could to get off the subject.

Considering this is a democratic bill adopting some bipartisan views, and the democrats have always been the primary advocates for veterans, I feel this is going to help you and your family.

Some cherry picked doctors are going on air complaining of low Medicare rates, but, they are basically planted there by the opposition to the bill and are in no way indicative of a majority stance on any of this.

myLot reputation of 48/100. sndcain36 (2691)  2 years ago

Do you know what the VFW is? Do you know that I get my information directly from Tricare and the VFW and not from any "cherry picked" doctors planted by the "opposition"?

This is going to screw my husband over. In fact, the VA has already tried to cut my husband's disability, so save your speeches about how great the Democrats are to vets.

One more thing: our quality of life under Clinton was crap. Quality of life and benefits for the military under Bush were far superior. That's the truth.

Veterans benefits actually ran out of money under the Bush administration and it was the democrats who managed to extend it, despite the republican obstruction then. It's actually commented on without refute in the video I linked to.

The Republicans are being ridiculous. The argument over health care is getting out of hand now. The Republicans had eight years to come up with health care reform, and they did not do it. The Republicans had eight years to keep us out of debt and get us out of debt, and they did not do that either. The Republicans have said "NO" to several ideas time and again. I have lost all hope the Republican party. They Republican party does not progress and they would like that we all suffer and die! It is all about money for them, not human life. They say that are about the welfare of human beings, and they lie! People are dying and suffering everyday because they do not have health care, and the Republicans don't care! I am sick of the "Tea Party" and sick of the "NO's". Health care for everyone!

Agreed 100%. The unspoken truth is that most of us are just waiting for the grand old party to die off. It's a shame they can even recruit young republicans into their mix, but, luckily, the majority of the youth today falls in the left wing.

I hate having to repeat other things that have been stated elsewhere, but we all know that we can get a poll to support whatever we want. If the best Anti-Obama poll you can post is one saying that 49% approve of him, then I’d say the left is in good shape.

I could easily go to a Peta convention, and take a poll, and post it saying that 100% of Americans support being vegetarian.

There are different controls involved, numbers, questions posed, etc. I am surprised you couldn’t find one without a 2% margin.

I so agree with you. Every time I bring these things up and point them out (around friends and family most of whom are republican), I get dismissed and put down. But reality is reality. Facts cannot be changed. When you are caught in lies, why the heck don't people SEE the lies and see what is happening?
