Have you ever pumped gas

when you were a kid? If you've ever driven a car, chances are you've pumped gas at one time or another. But have you ever pumped gas when you were a kid? I did maybe once or twice when I was growing up. I was probably 8 or 9 years old at the time. I think my dad wanted me to learn just in case I ever needed to. Either that, or I asked him if I could and he let me. Heck if I remember, it was so long ago! LOL Nowadays there are signs posted at gas station pumps stating not to allow anyone under driving age (which is 16 years old in California) to pump fuel. Do you have signs like this where you live? Whether or not you do, do you think children under driving age should or shouldn't be allowed to pump gas? Why or why not?

For starters, when I was growing up there were no self-serve gas stations. We always had an attendant take care of that. So, no, I never pumped gas as a kid. I don't recall seeing any signs like that at our gas stations. I wouldn't let my kid pump gas anyway. My daughter recently got her license and when she pumped gas for the first time she was asking all sorts of questions even though it's all spelled out there on the pumper. Guess she was nervous. I was nervous the first time too. I didn't know how to read the stupid gauge and ended out only pumping about $2 worth of gas and charged it to my credit card. The cashier was not amused. I think I was reading the litre gauge and thought it was a lot of money.

I started driving when I was 13. Got my permit at 14 but didn't pump gas until I was about 15. My parents didn't let me pump gas when I was a kid. I don't recall seeing any signs in our area that minors can't pump gas. I really don't think it's a good idea to have kids pump gas. Just seems a little on the dangerous side. Might not be a bad idea to have the child go help the parent or adult to learn how it's done but to actually pump gas alone might be risky. Warnings in the midwest are not to use a cell phone while pumping gas or get back into the car while the gas is filling the tank. Has to do with static electricity and potential fires.

I can explain myself. At 13 my father took me to another state on the old, country, gravel roads and taught me to drive. I drove all over those roads each time we went to visit relatives. It was farmland so very few cars were around and the homes were spread out. I didn't drive alone in a big city. Traffic when I was 13 isn't anything close to what we have today so it was safe.

We have those warnings here are well. I hate to say it, but I'm a little confused at part of your response. So, you're saying that driving at 13 isn't dangerous, but pumping gas at this age is? Personally I think if kids have a responsible adult with them to help supervise then there's nothing wrong with it, so long as they (the kids) have the mental and physical capacity of being able to use a pump, that is. Heck, chances are they're going to have to learn eventually. They might as well learn how to do so before they learn how to drive.

I was working as a driveway attendant when I was 16...that was back in the good old days before they had self serve pumps. I don't think children should be allowed to "pump gas". It's dangerous goods after all and just not a good idea.

Having grown up with Grandparents who owned a Bar with Petrol pumps outside (Hey,it was a rural area! ) I remember as a kid throwing the switch indoors that controlled the pumps (Didn't want somebody thinking they could do a driveaway, even 40 Years ago..!) then going out and filling cars and trucks...I thought it was great fun.. Didn't know there were age regulations on operating the pumps,though..(Wonder if there are any photos left of Me doing this? )

So it's not a legal requirement that the signs are up there to prevent those of non legal driving age from pumping gas,it's just the station or Gas Company covering themselves in the event of spillage or an accident? (I seem to recall a few online photos recently, poking fun at this type of sign at Certain stations affiliated with a certain Gas company having some trouble in the Gulf of Mexico at this time....)

No, not to my knowledge it isn't. Where the signs are positioned (they're not exactly in plain sight) and the way it is stated makes me believe that it isn't a law, though I could always be wrong.

I wouldn't say it's a regulation. It's more like a safety notice to ensure gas stations don't get sued.

I am pretty sure that is the same for here in Ohio and it may have happened because some parents were irresponsible. I didn't because when I was a kid, there was no self pumping, or at least my dad didn't use them...But I remember my nephew would always pump for his mom and he was only 10 or so. I think it is a good idea, as long as the parent shows them the proper way to do it and that they never do it without the parent there. That way there is one less thing for them to learn when the do drive..

Good point. And I agree. So long as they have proper adult supervision I don't see anything wrong with it.

Thanks for the BR...Though we both agree that children should be allowed with supervision, we can get into trouble if we allowed our kids to do this..:(

I don't think I ever pumped gas when I was a kid, I just remember thinking I couldn't wait till I was old enough to learn how, I was always the one who got sent inside the store to pay it..haha. We don't have any kind of signs where I live that say that. I'd say that I wouldn't mind kids pumping gas over a certain age like 12 yrs old, under that I don't think they should be able to they have to learn sometime tho.

I have not seen signs like that here. Probably everyone is worried about a law suit and exposure to carcinogens and maybe even gas skips.I think it depends on the kid, I never did pump gas as a kid, because at that time stations were full service. No One except the attendant pumped the gas. I think it would restrict some of these self employed young people who mow lawns if they could not go pump gas to fill their mowers. At the very least, I believe that this should be part of a driver training class, just like changing a tire. The last I knew, you could start that at 14 1/2. I believe that in driver training you should be taught how to chekc all fluids and to check lights and brakes. Learning is a tool. These skills are pretty necessary for survival.

That's not a bad idea! All of that should be required to pass driver's ed. I was thinking the same thing, at least when it comes to possible lawsuits anyway. It seems so many people are sue happy nowadays, so it wouldn't come as a surprise if that is why some gas stations have resorted to putting these, as well as other signs up. It's kind of sad in a way. If only people would use common sense instead of finding ways to sue for this and that, businesses wouldn't have to do that in the first place.

When I was a teenager....one of my best friends dad's owned a gas station. Back then you got full service when you pulled up to the pump. We would pump the gas...and wash the windshields! YES......I worked with her many times so her dad could have some time off..it was so much fun! LOL I probably wouldn't suggest it for younger people now though....its dangerous!

I think its silly. As long as your parent is with you then you should be allowed to pump gas even if you are younger then 16. I dont think I ever pumped gas until I was about 16 and asked my mom if I could do it just to see what it was like. I never got my licence until I was 17 though. I didnt want to get it when I was 16 although I could have.

I think it's silly as well. As long as the child is mature enough and has a responsible parent/guardian with them I see nothing wrong with it. Like you, I didn't get my license until I was 17. However, unlike you I didn't think I could pass. But that was only because I thought there would be parallel parking on the test. Had I known that it wouldn't be on there I would have went for it a lot sooner than I did. LOL Happy mylotting!

In a way that's too bad. Because it sounds like you're a natural! LOL Fortunately where I live parallel parking is pretty much limited to the downtown area. And as I tend to avoid going there I don't have to worry about parking like that!

Actually I was scared that I wouldnt pass either due to the fact that we had to parallel park! I tried it once with my mother when we were practicing at the school and I couldnt do it and so I was like thats it I'm done I'm not practicing this anymore and decided that when I went to take my licence that I would just wing it and hope I passed. Well sure enough the day that I had to parallel park I did it perfectly. I have never even tried to do it since that day. I am terrified of hitting someones vehicle so I will just keep driving around until I find somewhere I dont have to parellel park.

Yup, i did it before, but it's for the wheels of my bicycle!! lol =D In my country here, one is not allowed to drive til they turned 18. Even at 18, they must have a valid licence in order to drive. It's very strict over here. As long as drivers are concerned, they would have pump gas by themselves.. hehe ^_^ So far, i have not known any of my friends, whom drives but did not do the pumping on their own.. lol =D

I never pumped gas as a child--that was so long ago that nobody pumped their own gas, an attendant did it for you. While it was filling, he cleaned your windshield and checked your oil, too! It wasn't till I was a teenager that self-serve pumps started popping up.

I'm pretty sure I pumped a lot of gas when I was a kid. Mom would always ask me if I wanted to pump or pay.. I think I'd usually pick pay because I wasn't crazy about pumping, and I'm still not, lol. My kids have not done it yet though. I have seen those signs, not at every gas station but some of them have it.

I don't recall ever seeing signs like that here in Vegas. It's probably not wise for younger children to pump gas. Some of the pumps are very heavy and each work a little different. If they drop it it could be a real mess...but then that could happen to any of us.

I never considered children pumping gas to be honest and I can’t say that I have ever seen one doing so. As far as I know it is not legal for children under driving age which is seventeen to pump gas in Australia although I may be wrong. It would have been very exciting as an eight or nine year old to be allowed to do it!

Hm, I don't think I did. I eventually figured out how to do it on my own. Nobody showed me that I recall. I don't see why a child with a driving permit (ie 15 1/2) shouldn't be taught how to pump gas, but I don't see any reason to teach a child that is younger than that how to do it. But should they be allowed or not allowed if they're younger? Hmmmmm, probably shouldn't be, as it could possibly be dangerous.

Wow! Signs there not allowing kids to pump gas? No we don't have those here. I did pump gas when I was a kid but always under adult supervision. I can see why a store would want to have a child supervised while pumping gas. It could be very dangerous. I allow my own girls to pump gas..they are 12 and 16 now though. I guess I let my oldest learn when she was between 9 and 10. She impressed her driver's ed teacher with her gas pumping abilities just the other day..lol.

I am here in Dallas Tx. I haven't ever seen any signs saying that children can't pump gas. I am torn as to whether or not they should. Obviously little, children shouldn't do it for the same reasons other people have said. It is dangerous and the pumps are heavy. However, I do think it is wise to begin preparing children for task they will have to accomplish in life. So, I think it would be ok for an older child/preteen to learn how to pump gas. Just my opinion.

When i was very young, my father had a job pumping gas at a service station. He used to let me hold the handle while he was pumping it so I could feel and hear the gas going in the tank. i thought it was the neatest thing. There are age restrictions on pumping gas. Even if i had been od enough to do it alone, i don't know that I could have had good control of the handle. Still, doing this with my father is a good memory from my childhood.

Oh Gosh no as a kid I could not even tolerate sitting in the car while the rightful owner pumped his own gas. The smell of the fumes use to make me want to throw up, funny though as an adult I must have out grown that as I have been pumping my own gas for many years. I remember sitting in the car and holding my breath gasping for tiny breath and anxiously wanting to leave. Maybe it was a thrill with being a car owner, who knows.
