$1.10 For a $1 Lottery Ticket

I know this may come to a massive surprise to some of my fellow MyLot friends here. But I am EXTREMELY anal retentive when it comes to my money, and I go to extremes to preserve it. I have a jar of pennies that probably has $200-$300 in it. I could take it to one of those machines and turn them in. But they will charge me a percentage. I could take them to my bank and they would likely give me the money without a charge. But then I have to carry this very heavy jar with me to the bank. I went to the store and bought a lottery ticket for $1. I gave the guy a one dollar bill and ten pennies. He looked at me strange. "It's only a dollar," he said. "Yes. I know. I am trying to give up some pennies. Give me a dime and we are good." I said. I will probably exchange all of my pennies this way. I will still have to take the silver coins in for exchange. But this is just one way I convert my money into something I can actually make use of. Onward and upward.

I only keep a small mason jar for my loose coins, so it is easy to carry to the bank once it gets full. My bank is literally 2 blocks away from my house, so it's easy to take in all my loose change.

@porwest A talking jar? That is pretty cool. I like not knowing how much I have in mine. The excitement and anticipation of bringing it to the bank and dumping it in the coin machine is what I look forward to. I am always mildly surprised when I find out the total.

@moffittjc When it comes to money, I am not one for mystery. Besides, it's kind of a funny talking jar. Mine has a lisp. No joke. It literally says "thents" for cents.

I have not weighed my penny jar. But I know it is heavy as hell. Not sure what my coin jar weighs either but I know it's pretty heavy too. Has about $300 in the silver coin one, and I only know that because I have a talking jar that counts it and tells me how much us in there everytime I put a coin in.

You can't bring a jar of coins into the bank and expect them to actually count all those coins. And if you tell them there is X amount in there I doubt they will just take your word for it. If you put them in coin wrappers no problem. That's what I always do.

@lovebuglena My bank has a coin counter in the corner. You bring in your coins, dump them into the machine, it counts them, and spits out a ticket with the amount on it. You bring that ticket to the teller and they ask you if you want cash or want to deposit it. It's pretty simple at my bank to turn coins in. And they don't charge me to do it.

Yeah. I have heard they have gotten rid of those there. There has been some talk of doing that in the United States, but I honestly believe they will never actually do it.

@marlina They might. I think the biggest hurdle is getting Americans to go along with the rounding up idea. It adds up to a lot of money over time and some Americans may be weary of it.

How about rolling them and then take $1.00 at a time in to get a bill.

@porwest They don't do that at the bank. Who wants to sit there and open all the rolls and count...

I used to do that. Most places nowadays still want to open the roll and count them to make sure I didn't try to get away with stuffing a couple less pennies in the roll than I was supposed to. I suppose people have done that in the past and registers came up short. And I am not sure I'd be okay with making the cashier stand there and count out 100 pennies.

@lovebuglena No. I am aware of that. Most of the time you can roll them for ease of transport. But almost all banks will have a coin counter, so even if you brought them in that way, they'd break them open and let the coin counter do the counting for them. I too would not want anyone to have to count any amount of coins like this by hand. From my comment: "I am not sure I'd be okay with making the cashier stand there and count out 100 pennies."

I probably have a couple hundred dollars worth of them in a HUGE jar. Might be more. When I take my silver coins to the bank to cash in, for some reason I never take the pennies.

@LindaOHio I have a few of those. In fact, I found one the other day. You know, that makes me think I should go through my entire jar of pennies and see if I have anything of value hidden in there. Our flea market has many coin collectors buying and selling coins and they may be able to offer me something. What do I have to lose?

Just make sure you don't give away those old coins that collectors like to buy

Yep, I sure am @porwest just think how much you could gain if you happen to have one of those rare pennies worth a million or so. Of course on the flip side you'd have to find the collector rich enough to want to pay.

I do this with the silver coins, but for whatever reason never bring the pennies in. I've been accumulating pennies for years. I really have no idea how much in them I actually have but it's a very tall and full jar of them.

I put my pennies (and other coins) into those coin wrappers and then go deposit them to the bank. Of course those coin wrappers are not free but I pay $1.08 for a whole bag of them. You don't have to deposit them all at once. Do it little by little. I wonder how a cashier would react if you were to buy something for $1 and give him/her 100 pennies...

It is one way to do it for sure. Although it confuses the hell out of cashiers these days. They are probably so immersed in critical race theory in school they don't have time to set aside to teach math. lol
