I had a job interview this morning.

@TheHorse (232201)
Walnut Creek, California
December 2, 2020 2:12pm CST
I have applied at Guitar Center, near my house, to be a guitar and piano teacher. One more interview (I get to give an employee a pretend guitar lesson) and I hope to have the job. I will see how many hours they need me for, and whether I can medical benefits, etc. Wish me luck! I have always wanted to teach music "professionally" at some point in my life. This could be the perfect opportunity to get started.

I definitely hope you get the gig. I'd probably not get it because I don't know a lot about theory and all that. Keep us posted.

We all know theory in different ways. Some people talk "one-four-five progression." Others say "C-F-G" or "G-C-D." Everyone learns basic theory in different ways.

@porwest I think, with beginning guitarists, I'll focus on naming the strings, getting the guitar in tune, and learning one or two chords. Then I'll help them with scales, starting with what I call "passing notes" between chords. But I'm sure each student will be different. If I get the job, I'll keep you posted!

@TheHorse For sure. I mean, I know what the scales are and why they make sense and how they go together. I understand arpeggios, legatos, and staccatos, the circle of fifths and all that jazz. But not sure I could teach it. lol

I really think it could be, especially if I have a lot of kid students. They always make me smile.

Congrats. I hope you get the job. If music is something you love doing, giving a pretend lesson to an employee should be easy. Just imagine that person being a real student. Hey, you might teach them something new, as humans never really stop learning.

I would love to see how a person can "chose" to stop learning. Sometimes it happens without us even realizing it. @TheHorse

@kaylachan I think so. I HAVE known adults who get set in their ways, and their beliefs, and are no longer receptive to new information.

I agree. We'll see. I agree that we never stop learning (unless we choose to).

I'm not doing the "distal learning thing" at the College. And the preschool is still on "semi-hold" (no subs). So I'm mostly working on my book and teaching at another friend's preschool "now and then." That's not enough for me.

It sounds like a good fit, and if it comes with benefits so much the better. I used to play guitar and had a teacher I liked..However, I could never tune it which ended my playing days. That was a big frustration even with auto tuners it never sounded right.

I always "tweak" my guitar after I use an electronic tuner. I like my bottom e-string VERY slightly flat, so it sounds right with a g-chord (often used in bluegrass and folk music).
