Do you leave the keys in the car where you live?

Last Summer, a native Montanan had the nerve to laugh at me because I took the keys out of my ignition and put them in my pocket when I came to visit him. "You really are from California!" he taunted. I laughed and said "Yes I am! And where I live, we lock our cars when we go to bed at night!" It's hard for Montanans to understand how Californians live, much as it's hard for Californians to understand how Montanans live. Unlocked bicycles on the lawn. Keys in cars. Have you ever lived where people leave their keys in the car when they visit? Have you ever lived where you have to lock everything up at night?

We probably don’t even need to lock our house, but we do. We lock everything. You have a message.

Last week my little brother forgot to take the bike key. The key remained on the bike. By the grace of God, the person next to the ground floor kept the key with him.Next morning my brother could not find the key in the house. Then he remembered that the key was to the bike. When he came down he was looking .. then the person next door gave him the key. Then he relaxed and so did we

Nope, not even on the bases dad was assigned on. Of course here if you do leave keys in the ignition chances are that car would wind up in Juarez.

We lock our car and bring the key inside the house. We have lived for almost 3 years on the beaten track in the Republic of Ireland years ago. I was shocked as the neighbors didn't lock their houses and my husband copied it. They even leave their purses on the bench when receiving the communion in the church. .

Absolutely! Even in a locked garage. Many news reports every single night of cars getting robbed with the keys left inside. Crazy!

I'm living in my own private Montana. Nah, here, I take my keys with me, even if I don't always lock the truck.

I actually leave my front door ajar for kitty when I leave sometimes. There are not a lot of home invasions here.

Never. In India, even old vehicles can be stolen. LOL. Petrol stealing is common.

Stealing gas out of a vehicle is common here, too. That's why I have a locking cap on my gas tank. So far, nobody has broken it to steal gas.

For awhile, locking gas caps were popular here. But neither of my vehicles has one.

Not in here. I live in a typically and relatively safe suburb, but even then we have the occasional car or bike thief. Whenever we tell ourselves that it will never happen us, chances are, it will happen to us that one time.

I've lived in both scenarios and also in a town where our house didn't have a front door key. We don't lock up at night here but we don't leave the keys in the car.

@TheHorse Bad things can happen anywhere, and may be more prone to happen in areas where there is a higher level of complacency and therefore, vulnerability.

Here everything has to be locked, sometimes someone pretends to ask for the address and turns out to steal a car in the garage with their friends.

I don't leave the key in my car but sometimes me, being forgetful, forgot to lock it. If I live in the town, my car would be gone by now. Nowadays, I have to check multiple times to ensure I did lock the car. I also lock my doors. There was cases of burglary before. At least they never bother to check my car or they might get lucky.

When I was a kid on our farm, keys were always left in vehicles. I often took drives on our tractor in the fields. I didn't start locking my car and taking the keys out until I moved to the city to live. I only started taking the keys out of my car after I moved to the city because my house key was on the same key ring as my car keys. Now, I lock my car as soon as I'm out of it and the keys are tucked into my belt.

@TheHorse We didn't even have locks on the doors when I was a kid. When I started sleep walking, around 12 years old, mom put hook and eyes on the screen doors to keep me from going outside at night. It didn't work, though. She often found me out in our porch swing, singing to the moon and stars or asleep the next morning in the swing.

We used to leave the key in the car on the farm. In the 70s. Now, rural crime is rampant and only a fool would do that. I find it hard to believe rural crime is that low in Montana.

In my home state of Louisiana I never leave my keys inside of any auto since it is a temptation for a thief to steal the car.

Lock em' up. I've heard that phrase before Always lived where we locked cars. The one time I did not put away my bike as a kid someone stole it and my neighborhood was a nice suburb. Anyway, better safe than sorry..
