I guess I am naive

I honestly was shocked yesterday when my husband told me that when he went over to pull the chain to turn off our 20 plus year old ceiling fan, that the chain broke! Because of that, he couldn't turn it off. The only way was to flip the switch in the breaker box. That turned it off. My husband is very handy. He says the type of chain needed to replace it is available. He will buy it at Lowes and put it in himself. I know things get old and worn out, but it never crossed my mind that the ceiling fan chain could ever break.

Some things get thin and old. My mother broke the string to the attic last night. She is going to replace the string soon. Yeah you can buy ceiling fan chains. I had to get a extender for mine so I can reach to turn it off. I'm short.

That has happened here too. We have a switch on the wall that turns it off and on as well as a remote.

When Pretty and I moved into this house two years ago, every room had at least one ceiling fan except the bathroom. The only one with a problem is the ceiling fan in my bedroom... It doesn't have a chain and the switch only turns the lights on and off on it... I'm not handy at fixing something like that... So I have a stand fan at the end of my bed that runs 24 hours a day. It's good that he knows how to fix it and is willing to fix it.

Yes, it is nice, otherwise, we would have to hire an electrician, which would cost a lot more.

@LeaPea2417 Oh, yes... And that's why I use a stand fan.

Huh. My living room ceiling fan won't work and only has a string. I wonder if the string is not attached properly? Its way up above my head so I just ignore it now.

Don't take anything for granted as most everything will break eventually I think in past times things were made to last (or be mended) more than they are now. Especially tech like phones and computers...they have a shelf life and I think are designed to break so we have to buy a newer model

Of course, my friend.Unless the chain was made of stainless steel, gold or silver, it deteriorates every day in any way, if it was made of iron, it was simply going to rust with humidity or heat anyway, the best of all is that it has solution like everything in life

MIne have broken several times and I just replace them. Of course, a new fan chain will probably last a lot less time since most new things are junk!!

I wouldn't want a ceiling fan like that. I would like another way of turning it off. In my grandfather's house, he switched his lights on/off with such cords, hanging from them, but he also had switches on the walls, to turn them off as well. This was good, because when my brother pulled the cord too hard, and broke it, we could still switch the light off from the wall switch too.

What's that expression....Anything's possible. As a matter of fact I snapped part of the chain to my ceiling fan years ago and went to Home Depot for a replacement. So, yes stuff happens, lol.
