Soon-to-be fifty years married

When my mother was about to turn 100, we wrote to a government department (can’t remember which one) and as a result, Mum received recognition in the form of cards or letters from six or seven dignitaries. The once most prized was from Queen Elizabeth. Two politicians wrote short, hand-written notes which we thought was nice.
Tomorrow week, Vin and I celebrate 50 years of marriage. Because of COVID, our sons won’t be able to visit but they have organised similar recognition for us and we’re received lovely cards from the Premier of our State, the Governor-General of Australia and our Prime Minister.
We joke about only getting twenty years if you murder someone so we’ve had two life sentences but we’re still here together and battling on.

Wow! And neither one of you did anything to deserve the punishment... as far as we know.
Congratulations!

Yours must have been a pillow battle going by the togetherness that is shown in your various activities. May Gold turn to Diamond

You'd have to start from the beginning. I'm betting the two of you had lots of ups and downs at first but both of you obviously worked things out.
To me it seems it takes an awful lot to live with someone .... dogs n cats are easier, they do as I tell em, mostly.

@angelitovillegas Thank you. These days many do not have the commitment to stick to each other through 'thick and thin' but give up when things get a bit tough.

Congrats on lasting that long. My parents almost made it to sixty years of marriage, but my mother passed a year before that could happen. In an irronic twist of fate... my husband and I were married in a simular way, on the same day as my parents were.

That is so funny that you compared your marriage to a prison sentence for murder. Those 50 years of marriage couldn't have been that bad, could they? haha
Congratulations on your milestone anniversary. It is very commendable to see couples celebrate such an important anniversary date in this day and age when marriages usually can't even survive a decade.

@JudyEv I guess 71/72 may have been a good year! Is the divorce rate in Australia as high as it is in the US? Here, it's about 50%.

@moffittjc I had to look it up and I quote "The divorce rate is steadily falling over time, down from an average of 2.8 divorces per 1,000 people in 1999 to 1.9 divorces per 1,000 people in 2019". The fall is probably because many don't bother to get married in the first place. So I guess that's about 19% at the moment. Is that right? I'm not sure about my maths.
