Saw a Strange Thing at Walmart: Five Dozen Eggs??

Eugene, Oregon
November 19, 2021 1:52pm CST
I was there picking up a prescription for my wife, so I wandered around a bit. They have some large coolers for frozen food, beer and soft drinks and refrigerated stuff like cheese and lunchmeat. But at the end of one of those cold storage shelves was one with rather large carboard boxes in it, staying nice and cold. Curious about the large boxes, I stopped to read the sign. It read "Five Dozen White Eggs" and the price was $7.66. That is just over $1.50 per dozen which is a great price for eggs, but who could use five dozen? My guess is that local cafes must buy them. They must sell a lot since there were at least eight or ten of those boxes in the freezer. Have you noticed unusual merchandise at any stores in your area?

@JamesHxstatic We 'blew' an emu egg once and made a sponge in a baking dish. It was equal to about a dozen hen eggs so would have made quite an omelette too.

Women who prepare a lot of cakes and pies for Thanksgiving will use all those eggs if they are hosting a big party. May be a lot of deviled eggs.

@JamesHxstatic Eggs have to be refrigerated after you buy them according to European rules. I always keep mine in the refrigerator, or they will develop salmonella in a warm room.

I suppose so. It just seems like a huge number of eggs to have around. Eggs here need to be refrigerated too, so five dozen takes a lot of space.

@LadyDuck True, maybe it's the UK that does not require.
If you’ve never traveled outside the country, you might think that it’s normal to refrigerate eggs. Although that *is* true in America, in a lot of other places, this is not the norm. Europeans, for example, don’t bother with refrigeration of eggs. Instead

I haven't seen that here. I buy two 18 packs of eggs in a month. I use them in a lot of recipes.

People who are on the Keto diet buy lots of eggs and Keto is quite popular. It would take me forever to use that many eggs.

With big families, with big dinners for the holidays, or simply if you are frugal like me, such a bargain is hard to pass up. You've got dessert to think of, homemade pasta if you do not celebrate with ham or turkey, etc. I frequently prepare Crock-Pot French Toast which calls for 10 eggs. If grocery money is low, people can research recipes for the eggs.

Is it really such an unusual item? All of the grocery stores in my area carry those. My kids' school sends every class on a camping trip in the spring and those are really nice to have for breakfasts over the weekend when they go. It was mostly families who bought them when I worked at Walmart, though. They're quick and easy, and they can be cooked so many different ways.

I've never seen such a large quantity of eggs. Are they in regular cartons just 5 of them put in a large box?

I have bought those, when I am going to be baking and such. I used to buy seven dozen at a time at Sam's Club, or maybe there were more. That was when I had seven or eight people living at my house. I do not like the quality of those eggs, and they seemed slightly smaller than the label of "large". It is not unusual for me to pick up four dozen eggs at a time at Aldi. They have good eggs and usually inexpensive, too.

Lately I shop online but I was also thinking that the five dozen eggs were meant for restaurants and institutions that need a lot,

People who are baking lots of Christmas cookies could probably use that many. The recipe I use for egg nog uses a dozen egg yolks.
