All About Responses

I may peek at other responses before making mine -- only when l need a minor clarification on something the poster has said. If the clarification needed is a big one , then l will ask the question in my response.
Do you read other responses before making yours?
Sometimes the first response seems to set the trend for following responses --not a very good thing if that first response is a negative one.
Some posters may complain about very brief responses they receive. Would you prefer a brief response or no response?
Anything else about responses you would want to mention? Please do.

I usually have a look at the other responses, particularly if the post is interesting and I like to read the opinions of the others.
Interesting responses usually get an answer back and the threat can become long and more and more interesting.

Usually I respond before reading other comments. Sometimes my comment is almost excatly what someone has said and it looks like I just copied their response. Maybe I should read comments before making mine?

@Kandae11 I'm' probably going to scroll through the comments first now that we've mentioned it.

I don't normally read what anyone else has written as a response unless the discussion is really interesting to me and then I'll read and possibly comment on some other response(s).
I'm not thrilled with terse responses. If that's all someone has, I guess it's okay. But if someone writes "Oh, nice." or "Good to know." then I'll delete them.

@Kandae11 To the best that I can remember, you've never given me a terse response.

@DaddyEvil. lf the content has enough meat how can one be stingy with words when responding ?

Sometimes, but some of the respondents miss the meaning of the post, and then others continue on in the same vein. That is a bit frustrating.

Sometimes the discussion is tough to understand to a level that I don't find anything to write on it, in that case, I read others' comments and responses otherwise I respond to the discussion, and then if find others' responses and comments interesting then comment on them.

I don't often read down the responses but sometimes think I should. I try to write a mid-length response I guess but sometimes a short one is okay. What I don't like is reading someone's response to a post of mine then finding the exact same response on another post.

I always read every other response first, as it gives me more information, and ideas, about the topic, from how others have read, and understood it.
I then frame my own response, trying to make it different from most others, to give another slant to the discussion.
I prefer to give longer responses too.
"Not responding is a response."
said Jonathan Carroll, an American writer, but here on mylot, that certainly does not apply.

@Kandae11 It is true that we could be influenced by other's replies, but I prefer to take that risk, as I want to write something original, and I want to be sure that what I say was not just repeating, more-or-less, what someone else has said. I want to at least word it a bit diferently.

If the post is a little complex and I'm not sure what to say I will read the other responses. Gives me some idea what to say. If I'm interested in the topic I will also read the other responses. For me, a simple response is better than no response.
