Introducing Dixie

Yesterday, we visited a property where, from 13 August, we’ll spend two weeks looking after three horses, a dog, Dixie, and a cockatoo called Jim. I found a photo that I took of Dixie and her owner. Her other owner rides endurance so Dixie and the husband sometimes turn up at rides. She is a lovely, gentle dog as is Jim (except that he’s a cockatoo, not a dog! ) but I don’t have a photo of him yet. The house we’ll be staying in if over 100 years old but well maintained. Three generations have lived there so it has a lot of antique furniture and fittings – which means lots of photo opportunities.

Pet and house sitting? That should be a neat couple weeks ! It makes it a whole lot easier knowing that Dixie and Jim are gentle creatures!

We don't have to take Jim out of his big cage but now we've met him I'm perfectly happy to get him out from time to time.

Looks like it is a long 2 weeks to spend some break from your place. I think it would be interesting that you will be staying with different and interesting creatures there to entertain you as their guests. Enjoy your stay there and pretty interesting that there are old houses there that last that long. Maybe you could share some pictures of that old house with your pets around.

Vince will be cooking and we might be using the wood stove as that would help keep the kitchen warm.

Did the owners tell you they'd rather you didn't take Jim outside?

@JudyEv Oh, wow! I'd be worried that he'd fly away! Is he in a different cage on the verandah? Or loose on the perch there?

@DaddyEvil He has one wing cut so can't fly and I guess he has been used to this routine for a long time. He's very comfortable sitting on a shoulder or arm and snuggling into your neck. He is really very cute.

Jim lives outside in a big cage but they take him up to a perch on the verandah during the day - most days, anyway. And they brought his perch inside over lunch as he started squawking when we went in and shut the door on him.

Wow, a gentle cockatoo? That's a rare bird :) They're usually kind of nuts, lol. Dixie looks very fluffy and cuddly.

Jim likes cuddles. I don't usually like cockatoos much but he won me over very quickly.

You seem to be quite comfortable with the furry friends and other animals. I might not be that much. One day my kids could become too stubborn and ask for a Pet (Dog most likely) but till then I can just read about other folks' interaction with pets and other animals and enjoy. Have the winters peaked out in Australia? By the way are you following CWG 2022? Australia is topping these games so far.

I grew up on a farm so am pretty familiar with most livestock. All require care and attention (and cost money) so really I'm happy to be without the worry now. It's winter still but September is supposed to be spring. We have watched some of the CWG. We do really well here but the Olympics often bring us down a peg or two.

@JudyEv House and pet sitting can be very rewarding. Dixie looks very patient while she is sitting by her owner waiting to see what he is going to do with what he has in his hands.
