Breaking Up Is Hard Anytime.

This morning l heard a Christmas song titled : "What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?" , and l thought of the many people who spend lonely Christmases due to death of loved ones or broken relationships. Talking about relationships , most people agree that the worst possible time for a breakup is during the Christmas holidays. I mean, who would want to break up with a boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse during or just before a holiday which focuses on family, love, caring and sharing. Have you ever had relationship problems just before Christmas? Have you ever spent a lonely Christmas? What should the lonely do ? Pixabay image.

I wouldn't call it lonely but I usually spend Christmas alone now, before mom turned 95 I was always with her on Christmas.

Yes but I especially miss how mom used to decorate our tree, she stopped doing that when she turned 85.

I never broke a relationship during the Christmas holiday and I have never been alone and lonely for Christmas. What should the lonely do? Focus on something that make them happy. Treat themselves, go out at a restaurant for a nice meal. Host a small parties for other people who are lonely and alone.

@Kandae11 Those are people who would do the same even if they were not alone. I have known a few.

All very good ideas. Although some people prefer to sit at home and brood , feeling sorry for themselves.

Never had that experience There is so much a person who lives alone can do with their time to keep them happy. If nothing there is the virtual world they can depend on.

@Kandae11 I think sometimes neighbours and friends can be better than family

I’ve been blessed to have never had a lonely Christmas. If I were alone I’d invite people over.

Any breakup is hard. Breaking up before Christmas would be pretty devasting. Thankfully, my relationship breakups occurred during the spring/summer so not as bad. I've not ever spent Christmas totally alone so not sure how I would react. Each person defines and deals with loneliness in their own way. Some even celebrate it You cannot be lonely if you like the person, you're alone with is one way to see it. Or as Roy Orbison said, "Only the lonely know the way I feel tonight." Being alone is in the eye of the beholder...

Some people actually enjoy solitude. Over the years l have been alone ( by choice) for an entire year - sometimes even two or three but I never feel alone because family members are always around.

When it leads to depression - that would be the beginning of serious problems

No, I never had such an experience. Maybe I am lucky that I didn't lose or had broken a relationship during a festive time.

The lonely..what should they do? Find connection if possible, easier said than done. All my break ups were very welcome by me, so I was exhilarated and free and happy, no regrets. Lucky in that way.

@Kandae11 Yes in teen years we tend to be more feeling not hardened yet by bad experiences. I remember one boy fondly always to this day.

Many times I thought we were going to go out for Christmas and didn't go. I was ok, but it would have been good to go out for new years.

You didn't't go out last Christmas or new year's ? Well the way time is flying another Christmas and New Years is just around the corner - next time could be different.

Actually breaking up can cause mental illness because of overthinking.

Our son is on his own in another city. He and other singles get together for a simple meal. They call themselves 'the orphans'. I used to worry about him being alone but I don't so much now.
