One more thing about Chili

I posted about making chili, actually my wife and I both made it, maybe that's why it got too hot. But adding the small potatoes, a little lime juice & red wine took fare of the heat. We added an odd thing to the chili, and I wonder if others ever add unsweetened chocolate to it? (Just one tablespoon). If I had some, I would have added some canned pumpkin as well. It is not very sweet, adds body to the mix and is quite healthy to eat. But, the can I thought i had was not there, so next time maybe. Do you ever add things that sound odd to recipes?

There is a chili company headquartered in Cincinnati that adds cinnamon to the chili sauce. Sounds weird but it’s good.

@MarieCoyle That sounds awful. I like a good wholegrain.\ wheat bread with mine.

@JamesHxstatic I don't understand it either, but some people seem to have strange taste buds.

I have been to restaurants here in the midwest that often serve big gooey cinnamon rolls with their chili!

What’s chili? I meant how do you make this dish? I’ve never heard of it before. Errr for me I’d say sometimes I like to add cheese to my omelette along with tomatoes. My mom used to say it should either be tomatoes or cheese not both but I like them both so

@BabeSays If you use beans, you can use canned, just brown the ground beef (or?) get whatever seasonings you want to use together, put it all in a crock pot or big pot if you don't have that. In the crockpot, all you need to do is let it cook on high for about 6 hours, stir it occasionally, taste it to see if is good or needs "something." Then it's done and there should be leftovers for another meal or two.

My late father in law could answer in terms of chili . . . he used to participate in the chili cook off at his church each year. Once I do remember him adding in chocolate - we would never have known unless he told us. My mother in law was known for throwing in raisins in everything - maybe it's not odd to some, but I think it's odd in lasagna .

When Pretty and I are making stew in the crock pot, we add a tablespoon of grape jelly as it simmers. It adds a little bit of sweet-ish flavor that people keep trying to figure out but everybody likes it.

I don't but Vince does from time to time. I wouldn't be brave enough to start messing with recipes.

One of my grandmothers always put little chunked up pieces of potato in her chili, It was so good, now I do the same most of the time. My kids love it that way. Yes, some people do add unsweetened chocolate to their chili. I prefer just eating my chocolate in its original form!

Can't go wrong with potatoes! Small bits of carrots are good too.

@JamesHxstatic I sneak veggies in everything I possibly can. Carrots are good and blend in with nearly everything.

Sometimes I add things that seems odd, but often work. I added crushed hot chili peppers to a chocolate cake and it turned out good.

Well, that is a reach, but I think chocolate goes well with peppers sometimes.

Actually I have heard of adding unsweetened chocolate to chili but I personally have never tried it. I never would have thought about adding pumpkin though.

The chocolate adds an unusual flavor twist and pumpkin adds some body and is not sweet either.

@JamesHxstatic Yes, I do add things but not odd things. Do you make the chili in a crock pot? I have been making mine in a crockpot and it was really good. I have a a recipe that I follow. I like hot chili. I have not made it quite some time. Enjoy your chili?

All the time, although I can't think of any recent examples. I am always willing to give something a go or a little twist here and there. Sometimes you make delicious discoveries that way. As for chili, I don't ever like mine too spicy. Just a wee bit of heat and that's it for me.
