An Unexpected Trip To The Emergency Vet

United States
May 26, 2023 9:25am CST
Happy Friday Everyone! weather-wise it looks like a nice day ahead. Yesterday started off okay with the groomer coming to give the dog her spa day. When she was trimming her face the poor little pup yelped and cried. The groomer did a quick peek in her mouth and turns out she had a big abscess. Until that moment the dog didn't once act like she was having any sorts of trouble or that she was in pain. My daughter called the vet and it was no surprise they were booked especially since we're heading into a 3 day holiday weekend. They referred her to an emergency vet and the only appointment they could give was at 9pm last night. Turns out the abscess is pretty bad and she needs dental surgery. My daughter took her back this morning and now it's just a waiting game. They couldn't promise what time it would be done because there were other animals that needed surgery and I guess they do them in order of priority. I know we all love our fur babies and it's so weird not having her sitting on my lap while I myLot. Thankfully my daughter is working and is swamped with stuff she needs to get done so that will keep her mind busy while we anxiously wait for the phone to ring. I just hope it all goes well and that the phone rings soon.

@CarolDM thanks Carol. Poor little Mush wasn't able to come home until about 10pm last night. Today she's doing a little better but the surgery was more extensive than originally thought. She lost about half of her teeth

Oh how I know how that feels, dogs and cats are really good about hiding things that ail them. I pray the vet can get rid of the abscess and that she will be well in no time.

Poor thing. Hope it doesn't cost you too much. A friend recently had a pet emergency and one place wanted $2000 just to assess the kitty.

I am sorry that your dog took so ill so fast. They are our babies, and I will keep her in my prayers. I am sure that the vets will be crazy busy during this long weekend, but I still hope that your dog's surgery comes sooner than later.

@Marilynda1225 What a relief, and actually a very good coincidence that there were other teeth that were found to need extraction so that she didn't have to undergo this twice.

It was an extremely stressful day and she needed more teeth extracted than originally thought. She finally was able to come home last night at about 10pm. Today she's still a wee bit woozy and is sleeping quite bit. A few days she should be much better.

Our poor little pup came home last night and it was a rough day for her and for us waiting. The surgery was more extensive than originally thought so she didn't come home until late last night. Today she's sleeping which is probably a good thing

Well she managed to spit out the pill so now we have to figure out how to get it into her as she really need the antibiotic and the pain meds they gave her. If we could only make them understand and that they would feel better.

Animals are really good at hiding their ailments. It's a survival thing so I've read.

You're right Judy. She wasn't even acting like anything was wrong. But it's a good thing the groomer called it to our attention as it turned out to be worse than originally thought. The surgery was more extensive than thought but she's home now and sleeping. I feel so bad that we didn't realize there was a problem

Dogs are especially stoic. They don't show pain or weakness because in the wild they would be vulnerable. I'm SO sorry that your pup has an abscess. I'm glad the groomer found it. I hope all goes well.

It is ironic that dogs can have similar health issues to humans. Its a good thing we caught it because an abscess like this could travel to her heart.

I read through and see that your poor furbaby had surgery and lost teeth...I am glad she is home now. It's stressful for them to be in a strange place, just like it can be for us when we are in the hospital. It sounds like she is a much-loved pet, I am so glad. I hope she recovers well, Marilyn.
