Whenever I make a pasta dish, I often add what I like to call poor man's garlic bread as a side. I guess the reason it is called that is because it is very inexpensive and easy to make.
Not that we never buy a garlic bread loaf or Texas Toast. But it does save money to do it this way and it is actually quite good, if you ask me.
Very simply put, all poor man's garlic bread is, is regular bread toasted that is buttered and sprinkled with garlic powder.
Have you ever had poor man's garlic bread?

that's the best bread there is, which we always have done
with our stews & sometimes just eat with nothing but that.

I usually just buy Texas Toast, but I've made garlic bread your way before. Like you said, it's cheap and easy to do.

@porwest I agree Texas Toast is not poor man’s garlic bread. I just said that it is what I usually buy, but every now and then I’ll make some garlic bread the way you described. Mostly I’m lazy and just buy it at the grocery store.

@moffittjc When I have garlic bread, amazingly I have garlic bread too. But when I don't have garlic bread, I have poor man's garlic bread. Ugh. Is this really that hard?

But Texas Toast is not poor man's garlic bread, sir. lol. If I buy a loaf of bread for $1.50 and the spat of butter costs me a penny or two and the garlic powder costs another penny or two and I make four slices, I am spending about 27 cents for four slices of poor man's garlic bread. Where can I get Texas Toast for that?

When I was a student we used to do something similar. We had no cooking facilities at all except a kettle and/or a toaster in our own room if we had brought one. We used to get together to make toast and spread it with butter and the garlic puree that you can buy in a tube. Not a bad substitute!

No. Not because I think it poor man's food, but because we only use fresh garlic or black garlic. Is garlic powder like cheese powder? In that case, pass, go straight to bin, do not consume.

@porwest If it is just pure dried garlic, then sure, I would do that and enjoy it
. Stuff my mom used to use was called garlic flavourant, scarred me for life.

@TraveOnWorld Yeah. No. This is not artificial garlic. Just dried garlic made into a powder. I still prefer fresh whenever possible, but it is not always practical.

I just read your post about people missing the point of this post. It kind of took a hard turn into the merits of different kinds of garlic.
I've made semi poor man's garlic bread using French bread with butter and onion powder and baked in the oven. My folks don't like garlic and I sure don't want to spend a fortune on the store bought stuff.

When I have had spaghetti I have made garlic bread but never called it that. What I do is take a piece of bread and put garlic powder on it and butter it too and or not and put it in tin foil on my hot plate over the pot of food and eat it. It is like an appetizer.

It was funny to me as I read through some of the responses how many people missed the whole point of the post. They kept saying I just buy garlic bread or Texas Toast, and I was like, but that's not POOR MAN'S GARLIC BREAD. lol
Oh well. Sometimes it is hard to get the point across. It is what it is.

If we were to make a pasta dish and forgot to buy garlic bread that's what I would do too. Sounds good.

I am always running out of garlic bread, so now I know how to make a substitute and save some money too.

We have often been quite inventive with leftover breads to save money. I freeze the heels when I don’t get them used up. We like them for garlic bread, a bit chewier but very good. We have also used leftover dinner rolls, etc for garlic bread. I use leftover breads for bread crumbs for meatloaf or meatballs or even bread pudding. It all saves money and tastes delicious.
I come from the school of use things up!

@MarieCoyle Baking bread is not something I have ever done. But I do recall my mom had a bread machine when we were kids and man, the smell of fresh baked bread? Tantalizing.

I bake a lot of our breads for the most part. Warm and toasted, the heel is the best part!

Sure I have. It is also a good way to use up left over burger or hot dog buns. Just butter, sprinkle and toast in the oven or grill on the stove top.

When I was young my family sometimes made that type of garlic bread, not bad though store bought premade garlic bread is my preference.

But that would be garlic bread. Poor man's garlic bread is simply the cheapest way to have garlic bread without actually paying for or making real garlic bread. lol
I can make four slices of poor man's garlic bread for about 27 cents, which is the point. I can't buy any garlic bread for that low of a price and even individually sliced real garlic bread would cost way more.
The idea behind poor man's garlic bread is to sort of have garlic bread without paying the garlic bread price.
