Do you like to hear about other people’s vacations?

My sister and her husband got back from Jamaica last night, and boy did they have a great time. I was concerned when I had heard the U.S. had upped its threat alert for people traveling to Jamaica (as well as other islands), but those fears were unfounded. They went to a Sandals resort, and I was surprised they didn’t set foot off the resort until my sister explained what was on the acreage: numerous concerts every night, nine restaurants, their own pool, private beaches (with water sports and ferry rides available), a spa, 24 hour room service, and multiple shops, all at one resort. That sounds amazing. It still doesn’t make me want to travel, but I loved hearing about it. The pictures are great, and I was just so glad they got to enjoy time away. Plus, they could do it, knowing the kids were well taken care of (even Hudson, whose care is very involved). Do you like hearing about other people’s vacations? I love seeing the pictures people bring back. How do you feel?

I enjoy listening about travels experiences and also to look at people photos. When we visited the Islands we wanted to see the real local life, so we stayed away from those resorts. I know it was safer, but you miss a lot if you do not go around by yourself.

What frightened me was that they were telling people just because you’re at a resort doesn’t make you safe. But honestly, if we’ve been to Mexico and lived to tell the tale, Jamaica shouldn’t have been a real worry either.

@AmbiePam - I have been to several Caribbean Islands, the only one where I felt very unsafe has been Santo Domingo and NOT for the people, but because of the attitude of the local police. They stop the tourists with an excuse and you have to bribe them to avoid problems.

@LadyDuck Having to bribe the police would tick me off.

Yes, I do love to hear of other people's travels and vacations. It always sounds so personal when someone that we know describes their experience instead of having to imagine or read about it or hear it from a travel agent. I am dying to know how the children got along on their vacation.

They sent some pictures to my sister in Jamaica so they could share their adventures with their parents. The woman who runs the respite house posted some pictures on their FB page of some of the fun they had. Amyra drew a sort of comic strip on the concrete out back (with colored chalk), and tasked her brother and sister with help coloring in her work. I get to see them Tuesday, and they said they have a lot to tell me.

@AmbiePam I am sure that each of the children will have great stories to tell their Auntie Amber. I think that it is great that they were so engaged in the activities that were offered, like their own vacation really. When I see this recent picture, I think that Annalyn will be the tall one of the bunch.

Instead of just hearing, I like seeing the photos and videos of recorded vacations. It makes me feel like I went to those nice places too ..

I don't mind. So long as the discussion is not going to be too boasting—you never know, maybe their tales give me a reason to go one day myself to wherever they went.

@AmbiePam I have always liked Florida. Particularly the Panhandle area in and around Port St. Joe, St. George Island, Apalachicola and places like that. I can't think of any place I have been to I didn't enjoy in some way. I take the good with the bad and make the most out of anything most of the time.

I have been there, but I do enjoy other's view of their vacations. We even stayed at the Sandals resort. Very posh. Not recently of course...it is beautiful. The fact that's it's isolated from the main part of Jamaica is good--I don't like the main part. I never met so many demanding, pushy people in my life as the people that work and serve tourists in Jamaica. After the last round about 10? years ago, the family decided that Jamaica is just not our favorite place. But I'm glad they had such a wonderful time there!

@MarieCoyle That sounds like Mexico times 100. It kind of reminds me of when two girls from my college went to the Dominican Republic. They were not rich whatsoever, but they were about 30 pounds overweight. Ten guys proposed to them because over there, if you have extra meat on your bones, it means you have money.

That’s actually very good to know. I never had plans to go, but I like to keep tidbits like that in the back of my head, just in case. Was it people overeager to make a buck that made it so unpleasant, you think?

@AmbiePam Very pushy. Very demanding. They consider anyone stepping foot on Jamaica is extremely rich and has money to burn, seriously. I've even had clerks follow me out of their shop because they wanted me to buy something I didn't want to buy!

It is fun to see and here the events. I have been to similar resorts with my first husband's family. I felt like we did not really belong. . . sort of an "imposter syndrome", but it was fun. Not something I would do every year, though.

I would feel the same way, Heather. The absolute same. My sister, however, seems to feel like she fits in almost everywhere. My dad and I though have gone through dealing with Imposter Syndrome before.

I do..Happy they were able to go. Those all inclusive resorts are n',t cheap. My dad who seems to be lucky won a trip to Jamaica through his work. He had only one ticket and some had dozens. He also won 400 dollars from a 50/50 raffle.

It had been a very long time since she and her husband had been alone together. I think my brother-in-law might have needed the break more than even my sister.

I love to hear about other people´s vacations. I wanted to go, years ago, to Jamaica. But all the resorts in Jamaica where I could exchange my timeshare in Aruba had an all incluisve extra. I had to pay for eating in the resort whether I wanted to or not. That meant more money and not being able to go elsewhere.

The Sandals chain of hotels are great, and yes you don't have to leave the resort if you don't want to. I am glad they enjoyed their vacation.

Yes, usually my brother visits a lot of places. But he doesn't talk about them. I wish he would talk about his vacations. He showed me some pictures and they were amazing.
