An Incidental Afternoon with Mom

I hadn't planned on having mom along when I ran my few errands today, but she wound up calling me this morning and wanted to know if I was going anywhere. She needed to go to the bank, and she has been unable to drive due to her cataracts which she will be having fixed on the 22nd. Well, one eye then and the other a week after that. It just so happened I had to go to my bank, and needed to pick up a few things at Schnucks, our local grocery store, and Ruler Foods. So, I picked her up and we went to my bank first. I deposited a check and got some cash, and she had some coins to cash in, and my bank has a counter. She got $100 out of that. Then off to Ruler Foods, then her bank, then Schnucks, then I dropped her off and I returned home. She said she had a good time. It slowed me down a bit, of course. But it was worth it.

Enjoy every second of time with your mom. One day she'll be gone and you'll think back on days like this. Both of my parents are gone now, and I think about them all the time, and how much I would give just to spend a few minutes with them again.

@porwest Don't beat yourself up for that. I think we all take our parents for granted, thinking they'll always be around.

My wife reminds me all the time of the importance of it. She lost her mom when she was 12 and her dad when she was 18. I admit I sometimes take it for granted that my parents are both still here.

@just4him I hope the one that you are estranged from, especially, makes his way around. I am sure he will regret it one day if he doesn't.

She cherishes that time more than anything, and sometimes I feel selfish for not thinking about how much it actually means to her. I am tying to get better.

It's nice you got to spend the day with her, even if it was doing adulting.

@porwest Perhaps the two of you can think of something to do that's not adulting.

I have to keep that thought in mind. There is going to be a time when I am going to wish I could be slowed down.

@LadyDuck Very true. Funny how more often than not we DO know that and always tend to forget it.

@porwest you are lucky to still have your parents. I miss mine every day. Your wife was so young by the time she lost both her parents. That is sad.

I take it for granted that both my parents are still with me sometimes, and my wife always makes it a point to remind me of it. She lost her mom when she was 12 and her dad when she was 18.

@MarieCoyle I will never know the feeling as we don't have kids of our own. But I can understand it.

@porwest I am always so happy to do things with my kids when they ask me. I can't describe the feeling, but when you have children that are grown, and they want you to go to dinner, to come over to their house, to do something with them, or they take you on a trip...anything, really...the feeling a mother gets in her heart is the best feeling in the world. To know that you produced such special people, and that they love you that much...you've got it, she is ''elated'' and I am sure she loves spending time with you.

Me too. In fact, mom is with us now tonight. We are having her spend the night and I have a pot roast in the crock pot. We also had a fun Saturday together going to Trader Joe's on the St. Louis side, and also went to Burlington and Savers.

We moms appreciate any time we can spend with our adult kids even if its tagging along doing errands.

Moms are a special breed of people. Their commitment to their children is amazing. Most dads are like, whatever. But moms? Their children are their entire reason for being.

Always good to spend time with a mother. I wouldn't mind spending more time with our sons but that isn't going to happen.

It really was fun and with such a simple thing, she had such a great time. I need to try to be less selfish with my time. There is going to come a time when she won't be here and I am going to wish she was.

I hope her cataracts operation goes well. I have cataracts myself and I know what a problem they can be. It was kind of you to help her and it was nice that she had a good time.

She says she is nervous about it, which is understandable. But I think this is a pretty benign and routine thing these days. I think she will do just fine with it.

I saw the shopping cart pic on your post and immediately thought about quarters . But your post was not about that! Well what a good son you are for doing that for your mom. I'm having to do stuff for my mom now at times . . . but I'm only glad to do it.

That was a nice outing for you and your mom. My girlfriend just had her second eye done on Tuesday last week. She is amazed at the difference in how she can see. Said she saw her "real" wrinkles for the first time. Hope your mom does well with her surgeries.
