Wifey Didn't Believe Me

My wife brought out the oatmeal and decided she wanted to start eating it again. But she likes to put brown sugar in it. When she pulled out the brown sugar it was hard as a rock. We don't use it that often, and I know of a quick method to make it softer if I do need some. "How do I make it softer?" she asked. I told her to put it into a bowl and wet a towel and ring it out completely and put it over the bowl. The brown sugar will absorb the moisture and become soft. She thought I was messing with her. But the next day the sugar was soft. I am the cook of the house. Why would I lie to her? I honestly thought this was common knowledge. lol

Why dont you just get her the brown sugar and cinnamon already flavored oatmeal. . Also next time you get brown sugar, but a piece of white bread in it. I swear it works.

She doesn't like the premix stuff. She likes to put in her own brown sugar. I have used the bread method in the past, and I agree it does work.

I love the old-fashioned oatmeal that you cook on the stove, with a tiny bit of dark brown sugar on it. So, so good. I keep my light and dark brown sugar in their original bags, in a Rubbermaid thingy with a tight lid. It never gets hard in there. Just a thought. Another way of softening it if it ever does get hard is to put a piece of soft bread inside the bag, but the wet towel has worked for me before, too.

For whatever reason, it seems no matter how I try to store brown sugar it always gets hard. lol. But at least I know how to make it soft again. My wife cooks her oatmeal in the microwave.

@porwest I'm not sure why, but I absolutely hate instant oatmeal. It has a consistency I just can't do...and it seems gummy. I will stick to cooking mine in a pan and using the ''old fashion'' oats, they taste super good to me. I honestly can't remember the last time the brown sugar got hard. I use that Rubbermaid container and it has a tight lid. I put the brown sugar bag (original bag) in a ziplock, inside the Rubbermaid. It wouldn't DARE get hard...it works perfectly.

You are a genius! I had no idea of this. Not that I will use this piece of information as I don´t use brown sugar.

I consider myself a decent cook, but not even I knew that. However, I've been living out of the microwave because it's been easier. George isn't eating that much. Although he's trying, and it's wasteful to cook for just myself.

@porwest Except, I only have so much space in the fridge and freezer and have to keep stuff in it George can have too. Plus, while I do enjoy cooking, taking care of George and myself at times can be draining.

Wow! I’d take a spoon and keep scraping against the damn block of brown sugar, trying to separate it. Very frustrating and time consuming.

All I have ever heard of or done that actually works is to put it in a closed jar or Tupperware type container with a slice of bread. The brown sugar softens, and the bread gets hard. You can keep the bread in the container as long as you have the sugar.

Congratulations, I remember I watched a video to soften brown sugar, they used your same method, but placed the sugar in the bowl topped with the wet towel in a microwave in 20-second intervals, loosening the sugar with a fork between each interval.

@porwest - When I found that mine was as hard as rock I used the microwave method because I needed to use the sugar. As I donated my microwave, now I would use your method.

@LadyDuck I could not live without a microwave in the house. For me it is an essential appliance.

That does work too and is a quicker method. Although, it's easy to microwave in too long intervals and screw it up. But both methods work for sure.

That would be the quick method I mentioned in my post, that I didn't write very well making it sound like the quick method was using the towel. I was a bit rushed when I wrote it as I was cooking something on the stove. lol

Yes. That works too. In fact, we now have a piece of bread in the container we put the softened brown sugar. It should stay that way better now I think.

That's a good thing to know. I had to soften some brown sugar the other day but did it in the microwave. It worked but wasn't the best.
