3/9/24 - Update on My Husband

Spoke to my husband a couple of times yesterday. Someone walked in the day before and said, "We've got to get you out of here". Most likely insurance will no longer cover his stay. So, as of 2 pm today he will be transferred to rehab. Apparently his AFIB and blood pressure are not concerns to either Cleveland Clinic or the rehab facility. His cousin is going to take me to see him on Monday. Until then, the phone calls will have to suffice. Fortunately he can eat on his own because the dining room staff is not helpful at rehab. He does still need his meat cut up though. His manual dexterity is still not the best. Thank you for your continued prayers and support. Photo Credit: Pixabay

AFIB and BP are always a concern. They are just moving him because insurance is making them do that, I'm sure. You will no doubt have to advocate for him to have a bit of help with cutting up his food there. I hope he gets along well. Is he able to raise his head more now? Or sit up by himself? I hope so, that would be good.

When he sits on the bed, his chin is on his chest. For some reason he can't raise his head. Makes no sense. He has to hold on if he's sitting on the edge of the bed.

@MarieCoyle He can lie flat with his neck extended; so I don't see why he can't lift his head when he's sitting. Makes no sense.

@LindaOHio Can you talk the docs into getting him more tests for his neck/head? Obviously something is wrong, no doubt from the fall. I hope they figure it out, I bet it's painful as well. Poor fellow.

@LindaOHio Yeah, you don't want that. Have you looked into perhaps you and hubby both going to an assisted living facitlity? That way you could be together safely in your own place. Many of them have apartments. You could at least get on a list. You always have the option to decline when your name comes up.

I"m hoping it goes well at the rehab facility because there's no other place that could take him unless we dip into the group of 1 or 2 star places.

@snowy22315 The waiting lists for the nicer ones is usually very long. Yes, you can get on the list and turn it down if you are not ready. They will even keep you on the list. If he gets to come home, he will need help, and you need help, too. That's not easy to come by in these times. Home health help here is just stressed to the max, looking for good people to care for others. I don't know if the hospital would release him to go home unless he was either very self sufficient or had a lot of help available...and you need care, too. I know you want him there, I just hope it can all work out somehow.

I thought that’s what the laws were supposed to prevent: “oh, you’ve been in here for three days and insurance says we can’t keep you any longer.” Again, check with the VA to see if they can help if he needs more hospitalization than Medicare will “cover.”

@LindaOHio — I’d recommend calling the VA first. You don’t have to be on Medicaid to get help from them. His service paid the bill.

I still have to call the VA and apply for Medicaid; but I"m hoping it won't come to that.

I'm so thankful your hubby seems to be improving. I pray the rehab center will take good care of him, but it will help that he's able to eat on his own. I know he'll be glad to see you all Monday.

He doesn't like the fact that I'll only be able to see him once a week; but there's nothing that can be done about that.

@1creekgirl I hope so. Once he gets to rehab, I'm not thrilled how his room is set up. They don't put his water close to him, his phone is not by his side. I will have to do something about that if he ever gets there!

BP should be kept normal and he can only do light exercises now. Don't worry slowly he will regain his strength.

@LindaOHio It is horrible that it is the insurance to dictate what it has to be done.

So sorry tp hear that. I know he doesn't get the best of care at rehab. It is sad that insurance dictates your healthcare.q When I read stuff like this it makes me thanksful that we have the healthcare system we have have in Canada. That would never happen here. Continued prayers.

That's always the thing that irks me sometimes when it comes to insurance. They tend to determine the care more than the doctors, and that always seems backwards to me.

He wants to come home; so he will work hard. MUCH EASIER than Cleveland Clinic. Traffic around the building is a zoo. Backed up cars, waiting in the cold for Valet Parking, $10 parking each day, etc.

Same rehab as before? Blink Why AFib and blood pressure are not concern to the hospital? If they transfer to the rehab, then if his condition worsens, would they not be liable?

Yes, same rehab. The hospital should be liable. I think they will deliver a letter to me saying that I can protest if I think he was released too soon.

It's not the clinic of the rehab facilities. It's the insurance who doesn't care about your husband's needs and concerns. If the insurance won't pay for his stay at the clinic any longer, they have no choice but to transfer him to the rehab facility. I hope rehab will help him with his meals. My prayers are with you.

Good that he is managing to eat on his own. It is never easy to depend on others for basic needs. Slow and steady is the byword for full recovery.
