Midnight Fern

Another one of the plants we brought with us from out last house is this Midnight Fern. I was hoping it had survived the harsh winter and was happy to find it up and growing when I went looking for it. I'm not sure if I have it in a bad spot here or if I need to add phosphorus to the soil around it. It never has gotten darker than this purple color since it's been at this house. I'll have to look and see about ordering some phosphorus fertilizer for it this year. Photo is mine.

It's a pretty plant. Is it supposed to be a lot darker than whats in the photo?

Thanks. Yes, it should be a shiny black and was that color at the last house. But it was in a prepared bed at the other house. I need to dig it up, make a real bed for it and see it that helps the color. I can't bring the old photo up on myLot anymore. I was trying to show you what that same fern looked like at the other house but can't, for some reason. It isn't too big so I don't know what the problem is.

It's a pretty plant. I don't think I've ever seen a purple fern before. In looking into ferns, I find that you could add two tablespoons of Epsom Salt to a gallon of water and spray that on the fern. It may also have to do with drainage, and the Epsom Salt will help with that, too. Ferns seem to want just the right amount of water. Too much and you can get root rot.

I think I need to make it a bed instead of just sticking it in a hole I dug into the ground. Missouri has clay just under the surface of the soil so it doesn't drain well and clay isn't good for growing anyway. I'll look into the Epsom Salt and see if that would help. Thank you for the suggestion.

The fern - did not know its name - comes and goes in our garden on its own I am not aware why it has not got its original colour in your garden May be it requires more sun

@DaddyEvil The circled fern in the photo has come up on its own and here we do nothing - they just grow well

That's possible but I think it's more likely that the pH of the soil it's planted in right now isn't right for it to reach it's true color. After our car comes back from the garage, we'll be able to go buy some soil amendments and I'll make a new bed for it and we'll see it that fixes it. I haven't found any other fern plants that were already here since we moved. That would be nice if we had some, though. I admit I'm a little jealous that you have some naturally growing in your garden.

Purple is a good color. It appears that you have a way with plants.

Purple is okay but I really loved the way it turned black. We didn't have time to prepare a bed for it when we moved here and other things took precedent... But I have time now and would like to get it healthy and black again now. Thanks. I love my plants and really try to make them "feel at home" if you understand what I'm saying.

@sallypup A good gardener is always a great find! I learned a lot from my first wife. We planted all kinds of flowerbeds at our first house and then bought a house that was being built and put even more flowerbeds around it. We spent weeks planning each bed we put in and a ton of money amending the clay soil in our yards to keep our plantings happy and healthy.

@DaddyEvil Oh yeah. I am lucky I found a gardener helper who understands way more than just messing with grass. She is worth every bit of her pay.

@DaddyEvil Its not so simple, no ssubsidies and land is dry here. No subsidies if you tried. I could be a farmer. How much land you own half a acre. Is there a Garage yes, start a garden

@crossbones27 Yeah, I know there's a big difference between my yard and yours... I have two acres here and it can grow stuff I bring in from other places without amending the soil. Your desert land might not let plants from here grow without a lot of work first and then keep watering every day.

Thanks! We had ostrich ferns along one side of the last house. They were already there when we moved in about a hundred years ago. They were always beautiful.

It seems this plant can be easily grown. If you are worried about whether it is the right spot for it, perhaps you can share some in your other places, such as indoor.

@youless Yes, I have land to plant them on but the neighbor kids won't leave my plants alone so I can only plant them in the front yard. The kids can be seen bothering my plants there and they get in trouble.

I don't have room to bring it indoors. I already have too many plants in the house. I have several taro plants growing in pots indoors as well as several other plants.
