Can you see the guinea pigs?

We are house-sitting for our niece and have two cats and six guinea pigs to look after. Four of the guinea pigs, the females, are in a separate enclosure from the two males. Can you see the guinea pigs in the photo? The white one is the tamest and easiest to see here but there is a darker one just poking her nose out of the hutch. The females are in this enclosure and they have lots of hidey holes. We give them pellets each day, some grass and any vegetable peelings that might be around. They also get hay which is put under the dome affairs. They like to snuggle in there and possibly eat some of that too.

I've only seen guinea pigs in pet shops here.

@JudyEv I've heard they're popular here, too. Pretty had two male rats when she came home after she graduated from college. I wasn't happy about having them in the house but they were hers and she took good care of them. She had them for several years before they passed away.

My nephew has a lot as he has never separated the sexes. They are quite popular as pets.

@DaddyEvil I think people have rats here too but I don't personally know of any. In the village, it's small dogs that are 'de rigeur' it seems and a couple of people have cats.

@judyev Just don’t let those boys in with the girls or you won’t be asked back to house sit again.

One boy was found in with the girls but luckily before our watch. We're just hoping no babies, if any, will be born before the family return.

They're cute little things. These squeak at you for food. They love vegetable peelings and grass but their mian diet is pellets.

The green container has hay under it. The small containers are for their pellets. The white one is in front of the little hutch which is on the left.

@allknowing They get under the green one and snuggle in the hay. Those that look to be upside down they can get under. They feel safer with lots of hidey-holes.

I had a sweet calico guinea pig when I was in high school. Is it warm enough for the guinea pigs to stay outside, even at night?

@JudyEv You do have a warmer climate for sure. My guinea pig would not have survived outside. There is wire overhead to keep hawks and such from diving down for dinner?

@sallypup This a quite a secluded area and very close to the house so it would be a brave hawk that came in so close. I guess it's possible but it hasn't happened yet. I don't know if they've thought about putting a wire there.

On the left of the photo is their hutch which has wood shavings on the floor. They snuggle up together in there. And they burrow into the hay under the green dome thingy.

Yes I can see the guinea pigs, they are cute. My grandmother had guinea pigs. I liked to keep them on my lap and I remember that one peed on me when I was a kid.

@JudyEv - I could handle those of my grandmother, she told me not to keep on my lap for too long.

I don't think these have been handled much. You can't pick them up although the white one will come to you looking for food.

It's the ideal place for them. The boys have just as much room and the hutches are lovely and snug too.

They're probably not as good as cats as far as company goes but these squeak at you if they think you might have some food for them.

It is wise to keep females and males in separate spaces.

It is indeed. They breed very quickly and often so it pays to split up the sexes. Did I tell you my niece the female enclosure the convent and the males the monastery?
