A medical procedure and guinea pigs

I took Vince to the hospital this morning to have some fluid drained from around one lung. After some time and a bit of confusion, they put in a drain and he has to stay overnight. Luckily, he took an overnight bag with him. He rang about an hour ago to say it’s all over and he is in no pain but was looking forward to a meal as he has only had a biscuit since about 10am and it was them about 4pm. We thought he’d have a general anaesthetic, but he was conscious the whole time. They discussed movies and books, then got on to the subject of guinea pigs. The surgeon had been to Peru and had eaten guinea pig but didn’t like it much. Although it tasted like chicken, it was full of bones and came out with the feet attached which was a bit off-putting. The photo is of a guinea pig at Perth Royal Show. Edit: The photo just might be a rabbit. I can't decide for sure.

It is a good thing that Vince doesn't get bothered by speaking about dishes such as that, I would, but I do not think that I would have allowed the conversation to evolve to that point. I hope that you were able to go and pick him up and that you are back together again.

It's evening now and he will stay in overnight. He'll ring in the morning when it's time for me to pick him up.

That definitely looks like a guinea pig to me. *shrug* But I'd be willing to call it a rabbit if you want. I'd be willing to try eating guinea pig but the feet still being on the carcass might throw me off, too. I'm glad the procedure is going well and hope they give him something to eat if he's staying overnight. Surely they won't starve him... that would be torture, for sure.

He's had a good meal. Couldn't manage all the main course but ate every bit of the apple pie and cream. I would have told no dessert if you don't clean up your plate.

@JudyEv Poor Vince! Even when he eats, he can't escape and eat the good part first and then, if there's room left, eat the rest of his meal. A lot of people here eat dessert first and then the meal if there's room. If not, they can always go back and eat the main meal later.

@JudyEv Dad did that once in a while but mom never let us kids do it. She said dessert was after the meal and if we couldn't eat dessert, we could have it for a snack later. (If you didn't eat it, though, there was no telling if someone else would sneak in the kitchen and eat it before you got to it.)

@JudyEv I had that experience twice. Oncfe when I was a twenty year old I had Appendicitis. They had to remove my Appendix. I remeber how that young doctor was making me fee so good including the nurse. And then when I had that ghastly accident they had to remove blood around the thorasic region the accident had casued it

@allknowing Oh dear. Even with local anaesthetics it can't have been very pleasant.

It's amazing what they do now just with local anaesthetics.

I knew that the people in regions of south America ate foods I've never heard of eating but I never would have thought they'd eat guinea pigs.

We're too westernized to eat insects but I've read that many prehistoric humans used to. The French eat snails, another creature I have no intention of eating ..... I'll stick with chicken, tuna and salmon

@rebelann So it's just that every culture is diverse and different which is a good thing really. Makes the world a more interesting place.

In Japan and China they eat insects so I guess it's not as bad as that.

I am glad that Vince seems to be fine and in no pain. I would have not enjoyed the conversation about eating guinea pigs.

I find it amazing that they were all talking about all sorts of things while they were 'operating' as it were. He said he didn't feel a thing.

@JudyEv - I remember that my brother loved to tell me what they were talking about while he performed surgery on his patients. He made me sick!

I’m sorry he had to have that done, but am glad he is ok and coming home tomorrow. I don’t think I could eat a guinea pig. One of my cousins has two of them that are so personable and fun to play with.

@MarieCoyle I can't see guinea pigs becoming a common menu item. It can take a very long time to change the eating habits of a culture.

I wouldn't want to eat one either but they are bred in Peru for meat.

@JudyEv I guess it's all what we get used to, but I consider them pets. And no one wants to eat pets, so there's that...I hope that trend doesn't spread.

That sounds very off putting. Not sure I could eat it unless not eating it would be considered a major faux pas.

I'd be the same. I appreciate that it's part of their culture but I wouldn't like to do it.

It's not for us Westerners, is it? In Peru, they are raised under the houses for foods. Not much different to raising rabbits as food I guess. We saw that in Germany.

The conversation about books and movies would be fine with me but once the conversation turned to eating guinea pigs I think I would be ew Just the thought of eating guinea pigs makes me queasy Hope Vince is feeling well enough to come home after his overnight stay at the hospital.

@JudyEv that's interesting to hear that guinea pigs are raised for food in Peru but I've only known them as pets so it's hard for me to imagine eating them.

Pleased all went well for Vince. Can't think that there would be much meat on a guinea pig.....rabbit, however is delicious.

I saw an episode of Bizarre Foods where Andrew Zimmern ate guinea pig. Nothing I’d want to try. If I want something that tastes like chicken, I’ll eat chicken! Hope Vince is doing well!
