More Holes in our Yard

So far, the city utilities have dug 4 holes in our yard to check on the various pipes and wires running to the house. When they get done, they put the topsoil at the bottom of the hole and pile clay and rocks on top. I keep picking up rocks and putting in the trash. I don't want to ruin the mower blade by hitting them. Today, the city utilities people are back and digging another hole in the yard. This time to check and work on the water/sewer system. They've dug from the edge of the street to the sidewalk and have piled the dirt in the neighbor's yard. (I mowed as close to the hole as I could get without disturbing what they were doing. Hopefully, I won't have to pick up more rocks when they get done.)

DEI hires? I'd be out there making sure they put the rocks in first, then put in fresh soil and sod. And probably holding a shovel or pitchfork, too. (I had to give up my axe, just have a little hatchet now).

@DaddyEvil I did mine yesterday. Didn't quite beat the rain, but I didn't get electrocuted, so it's all good.

They just made a big pile of rocks and clay with the topsoil on the bottom of the pile. I don't own this house or I would be raising Cain about all the holes they're putting into the yard. Why would DEI employees do that more than any other type of employees?

If you just superpvisied them perhaps the rocks would go where they belong

They put an iron plate over this hole and left their machine parked on it.

They've left their digger parked on an iron plate over the last hole they've dug and the dirt/clay in the neighbor's yard. They can't get their car out of their driveway now.

I'd bet we'll have five of them scattered along the road edge of the yard. It's Pretty's turn to mow but she's asleep. It looks like it will pour at any moment.

Mowing over hidden rocks would be the last thing you'd want to do. It sounds like you have quite a large yard.

We have two acres here with most of it behind the house. As long as it's hidden from the street, we don't have to do anything with it.

I wonder if the holes will sink is why they piled the rocks on top that way. I kind of chuckled about you throwing the rock away but then thought well I must have a lot more land to toss rocks somewhere outside instead of in the garage then you do.

@DaddyEvil awesome you’ll have so much sunshine. That will feel good. The lawn sounds great what they have done to it. Was that automatic they did it or did you complain? Happy posts are better then complaining all the time

@shaggin I think somebody complained. It was several days after they completed the work before the workers came back and refinished it. That's true but I often don't say anything unless I'm upset about something.

We only have two acres here. I could have taken the rocks behind the garage but the city has a landfill rocks can go in, so that's what I did, sent rocks to the landfill. The city did send the workers back with rakes and potting soil. The guys cleared all the rocks off the ground and poured top soil/potting soil in the holes they left and then planted grass seed in those places. The grass is sprouting nicely with all the rain so our yards are looking nice again. We're supposed to have sunshine for a week so we can all get out and mow the tall grass again.

@sjvg1976 Only hookups to the things are supposed to run under private land. Our sewer goes under the yard and the pipes for water and gas hookups are under the yard but only those to our own house.

The first hole was to check on gas lines into the house but they dug up the yard in the wrong place for that. And then they said it was to check on wiring... there's no wiring under our yard. The next hole was to bury new fiber optic cables in our neighborhood and they placed the master conduit under our yard and left an access to it. They should have placed that on public land, not in a private yard. Now, they're digging up all the sewers through our neighborhood trying to find a leak their equipment says is here somewhere. The holes aren't just in our yard, they're digging up the streets and other yards, too.

You could use those rocks to show where those utility lines are so that next time they won't make such a big mess.

They shouldn't keep digging up the yard. I don't understand why they're doing that. They aren't replacing anything. I don't want the rocks in my yard at all. I'll keep throwing them in the trash.

The city sent a crew around filling the holes, putting potting soil on top and replanting grass seed and covering it with straw. I hope it grows okay.

I think somebody on this street must have complained about them leaving piles of clay and rock in their nice yard. The workmen came back today, dug out all the rocks, put what looks like potting soil in the holes, seeded it and covered the area with straw. They did a nice job.

@Shivram59 Even the places where they put the dirt back in looks bad because it was clay instead of dirt and they didn't bury the rocks they dug up. I'll take a picture when it's daylight outside if the rains stop.

I don't understand why they can't. It's not that hard to set the topsoil aside so it can go back on top of the clay and rocks when they refill the holes they dug. We found out that weird plastic thingie they left in our yard is access to a new internet system... It's three times the cost of what we're using now so they could have put the access on public land instead of installing it in our front yard.

Yes, it is. And some of them have nothing to do with us. (One of the holes is for a new internet system that we aren't interested in using. It's three times as expensive as the internet we already have. )

Sounds like a huge inconvenience having them dig all those holes in your yard. Having to pick up the rocks is a pain but probably better than hitting them with your mower. Hope they finish up their projects soon and don't leave your yard a mess.

Thanks... I don't know how they can all leave those big clumps of clay and rock on top of a lawn. Our yard used to look nice after it was mowed.
