We get kicked but we don't quit trying

It's been crazy and stressful here for the last week. I thought the son was feeling some better, and it was so nice to see. After so long of him feeling terrible and finding very little joy in life, I was pretty excited. Until last week. He got really sick, fever, disorientated, and fell a few times. Off we go again to the ER. Unfortunately, the doctor we saw wasn't as thorough as he needed, and he was sent home with meds...that did no good but did lower his fever. 24 hours later, he was worse, so we went back to the ER. (His primary is on vacation). He had a blood infection, had to have two transfusions, a slew of tests, and they slapped him in ICU again. And he was there for 2 days, then he was stabilized and moved to a regular room. Unfortunately, he has to be ultra careful about germs, contact with others, etc. The doctor has him wearing a mask if he leaves the house. Of course, I try to keep things clean and sanitized, etc. and am very careful. But regardless of what I do, he sometimes still gets sick. He's not ever had so much infection in his system before at one time, I think from what the doctor said, he has built up a resistance to some antibiotics so now they have to get creative with them. But now, after some days of IV antibiotics, he is doing better, and he is at home! I wish we could fix it all for him, and that he wouldn't ever be sick again, because he is so tired of feeling badly. But I was so thankful for him to start to feel better. I went back and forth, but it was hard to rest for worrying for several days. He has a lot of follow up appointments, etc. We are trying to keep the momentum going here and getting him to a point that he feels well again, at least as well as he can be. He will always have to have blood checks and transfusions when needed, but we faced that long ago, before the car accident and such. The main thing is, he is getting over this hurdle and is home. None of this is easy, the medical expenses are beyond horrible, but hey...that's just how it has to be for now. He's a fighter, and I am proud of him for not letting all of this medical stuff take that from him. He goes by ''Believe you can, and you're halfway there'' ...oh, the lessons these kids teach us!

It must have been exhausting to ride that emotional rollercoaster. You’re both walking a hard road, but your combined strength and hope are inspiring. Wishing your son continued recovery and stability, and wishing you some moments of peace and rest

I'm so sorry to hear this. Is he getting something to strengthen his immune system? Supplements or.....? Doctors don't tell a person the nutrients they need. They just prescribe. I really go for natural nutrients when at all possible to help with nutrition. We can take prescription stuff all day long, but if our system is weak, it may not do the trick that true nutrition can. I hope he is feeling better.

@MarieCoyle .........I'd be feeding him a diet of spinach, red meat, lentils, and eggs. Is he lacking in Vitamin B12, folate, and iron? They are red cell producers in the body. It sounds like the doctor is giving him supplements. That's good. Many doctors don't do supplements, and it really angers me. My grandmother was one to bring sick people home and bring them back to health. I just try to let people know about vitamins, minerals, and some herbs that are good for them.

@celticeagle His blood work is good but he doesn’t make blood fast enough to maintain his body. Hard to explain but it makes sense when the doctor explains it. I feed him high protein foods and strive for as healthy as I can with my cooking and meals for him. Thank you.

His body just simply does not make enough blood. The cause is unknown, I had never known of this but evidently it is a thing, and it does occur in some people. So he has had to have regular transfusions, as well as iron infusions, for about 10 years. He was used to that, he felt fine, he worked, etc. Then the bad wreck where the semi smacked him and all these surgeries, neurological damage, etc...dump all of those problems in the same body and there are some big problems. He does eat a very well balanced diet, I see to that. The doctor has him on two vitamin supplements. He has to take some meds as well. Thank you so much.

I try so hard not to show that I am tired...because then, the son worries and he has enough problems. My oldest girl is all worried about me and tries to help when she can...her in-laws are in very poor health, and her and her husband care for them a lot. Hey, when it rains...it's a monsoon sometimes!! Thanks, Judy.

With all the antibiotics, especially IV be on the look out for symptoms of C. Diff. It sounds like he needs the hyperbaric treatment like hubby had. It took care of the need for transfusions and iron supplementation. He is doing much better. I hope the doctors come up with a miracle for your son.

That was discussed and decided by his doctor as well as a specialist that it was not going to do the trick for him. I wish it would. Thank you.
