I fell last night.

Yesterday I went to have something to eat. I thought an avocado paste wouold be part of it but it fell on the floor. I tried to get up and I couldn´t. And the cellphone was in my bedroom. So with lots of pain I reptated from the kitchen through the dining room and into my bedroom. There I tried to get up but I couldn´t either. The cellphone was at the other side of the bed. And I already had taken some pillows. So I went with the rest of my energy to the other side and called Leticia. She came today with her son but he alone could not do much. Still, I had thought of a brilliant idea. There´s a place you can for urgengy called "HELP". My daughters pay it each month in my name. I allready know that I have to tell them my age and that I live alone. So as soon as Leticia came to open the door I called them. They wanted to take me to the hospital for a scan but I said no thank you. I´ll see if my butt keeps hurting and only then I´ll see what to do. They also wanted to put a IV for hidration. Again I told them that I´d start drinking warm tea and lemon tea. I was on the floor with no water at all all night since 8 pm last night. So now I´m getting better. Leticia suggested sugar and she added sugar iin my tea. YUCK! So I asked for another cup of tea no sugar and a piece of orange cake on the side. I will have to look for a maid that sleeps at my home. Too many things are happening to me and I don´t like senior homes.

I’m sorry that happened. Yes, it’s one of the side effects of aging. We used to have these “life alert” commercials where an elderly woman says, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” It became a joke (probably because of the bad acting in the commercial), but it’s a fact of life now. My brother protested them having a “fall risk” sign on his door when he had his shoulder replaced, and the nurse said that everyone over 70 gets it, regardless of their health and falling history (or lack thereof). I have seen devices that help people who’ve fallen get up (like a “chair lift” that’s on the floor, and you scoot over to it and push a button and it raises up until it’s tall enough for you to stand). I’m glad they’re making these things so senior homes aren’t a necessity. Pray you’re doing better.

@FourWalls I used to laugh at that commercial. I now detest it. For me, falling is a major emergency. Putting weight on my knees to get up is almost impossible because of the pain it causes.

I have seen those chairs. But as Lenore says, the problem is when you walk. We aren´t on a chair all day. Unfortunatly we need and want to do things. Yesterday I just wanted to halve an avocado to make some avocado paste. And the avocado fell on the floor. Lately floors are far away because of our knees with arthrosis.

@marguicha Do you have a walker that you could hang onto to steady yourself as you bend?

I am so sorry this happened to you. You need to have someone staying with you during the night. At last until you are not strong again.

I am afraid of falling too. Here is a video that might be of help to you: It also shows some exercises to strengthen your arms.

I'm so sorry that happened! I'm glad you were able to crawl to your bedroom and call Letitia. I wish you'd thought to call the HELP number last night, though. I've been falling lately, too. But, Pretty is here when I can't get up by myself. I hope you're feeling better now.

@marguicha Emergency people are allowed to gain entry if the believe there is a medical reason to gain entry to a locked home. I bet it's the same there. You'd have to have a window fixed after they got in, though.

@DaddyEvil After my house was burglarized twice I keep everything locked. They would have to break a very heavy glass.

I did not have anyone who could let them in. Today some friends came over and they said that they would help if they had a key. I gave them keys immediatly.

@marguicha That's a good idea. We have a key near the front door in a little box and you need a code to access it. In an emergency and providing we could speak, we could give someone the code.

Oh I am so sorry to know this. I hope you get scanned, just to check on your bones. but since you are home, just observe where it hurts the most and the bruises. I suggest an ice compress to those areas for the first 48 hours and a pain reliever if needed and I agree you need a maid or someone to be with you all the time.

I'm so, so sorry you fell. I have a pendant that I wear that I can press a button and summon help. The Fire Department put a lock box on my door so that they can get in. Maybe that would be an idea for you. Cheaper than having a maid 24/7.

I had an alarm system that had a special button. But when I had a fire, I called it and a machine answered me asking me stup*d things. After that, I quit paying.

I have been worried you might fall, when you talked about your knees being so weak. I am so, so sorry, it truly must have been miserable. I know you don't want one, but have you considered a walker, like a rollator walker? It might really help you. They are not bulky, not hard to handle...they fold up when not being used, and easily fit in a vehicle The biggest bonus is that they have a seat, so if you are hiking along with the walker and the legs get wobbly, you can sit and rest. Do you have the life alert buttons there? If you were wearing one and you fell, you could call for help. I hope you can find someone to stay with you, Marga. Please take good care!

After this I am looking for a change in my life style. Next Friday I´ll go to buy the perfect cane for me. Then I´ll buy a device to take my presssure as it has been too high. Oscar told me I should buy one and take my pressure every 2 days. And finally, I´ll buy a good bed and go with Camila to one of my favorite restaurants. The biopsy will have to wait. I´m not in a running mood.

I feel so badly for you, but you persisted and I am proud of you. It would be nice if you had someone who lived in, but even someone who could come on a regular basis several times a day would be helpful.
