We applied for and received a grant to get some work done on the house we're renting. Workmen have already done some things at the end of last fall and now they'll be coming back to do the rest of the work for us.
The work they're doing is to upgrade things that will make this house more energy efficient, like blowing in more insulation into the attic and outside walls to lower our electric and gas bills, replacing two windows in Pretty's bedroom that were damaged somehow before we moved in and replacing the front and back doors. (The doors were damaged before we moved in and we can see light through the cracks in the current doors.) They will also add plastic sheeting under the house to make a moisture barrier to improve the heating bill, too.
The work they already did last fall helped the heating and cooling bills a lot but finishing the work will drop our bills even more.
We can't wait for it all to be finished!

That's a good way to reduce your bills.
We have also installed solar panels so that we will consume less electricity to cut down our electric bill. Our bills are even higher than our house rent.
The bill went down 1,000 to 2,000 pesos, which is a lot.

@MarieCoyle Thanks. The electric company is holding meetings now to talk about the reasons they "need" to raise the rates.

I hope they do go down. Our electrical rates took a big hike on June 1st. I don't have a gas hook-up here, it's all electric. But I am not looking forward to getting the bill!

It is a lot of stuff. The landlady had to bring the property up to Section 8 standards and now OACAC is doing the extra work. (The landlady was really happy about that. It's stuff that upgrades the property without her spending a dime.)

Yes, it will. It will free up some of the money we've had to spend on bills up until now. That's always helpful.

Congrats!!!! Years ago we lived in a much loved shack on the edge of a Native American reservation. We applied for and got a grant to have work done like what you will get. Ha ha- the guys blew in insulation through the walls and zip, we had insulation snow in the living room. Truly a shack but a shelter.

Thank you!
I bet that was fun for you and the workmen!
When we applied for Section 8, a guy came through and checked for leaks and holes through the house. We had some work done on the kitchen sink and those guys left a big hole under the sink into the sub-flooring. When the guys were checking to see what the house needed, they included a price to have that hole repaired. I hope they don't forget it.
When we moved in here, we complained because it was less than half the size of the house we had... Now that we've been here over 7 years, this house feels fine. I wouldn't want to clean a house the size we used to have.

@DaddyEvil Does the hole under the sink leak in cold air from outside? Cleaning the house.....I need to go upstairs and just concentrate.

That is great. Your landlord is lucky you will deal with this, as it also improves his future bottom line. You will really like having new windows and doors where needed.

Yup! The landlady was really happy when we asked if we could get the work done.
We're hoping the bills drop quite a bit more than they already have.

That sounds like that work will definitely be a big help in not only making the house more energy efficient but also help reduce the bills. Saving money on anything these days is a big plus but energy bills just seem to suck the cash right out of the bank. Hope they get started and finished without too much interruption to your daily routine.

Thanks, but out "daily" routine is to sleep during the day and do stuff around the house at night. We're both night owls.
I'll gladly change for a few days if it means lowering our electric and gas bills.
