Home From the ER

Well, I had fun this afternoon... Pretty and I put the new mower together and watched a stranger mow our yard. Except in front of our car. I started the new mower up and Pretty started mowing in front of the car and killed the mower and couldn't start it again. I walked over, started the mower and got dizzy. I reached to catch myself on our garage door, forgetting a window had been broken in the last hail storm. I ended up slicing the base of my hand open. Pretty panicked and nothing would do except we go to the ER and let them check it over... Of course, they wanted to put in stitches... *sigh* Pretty took a picture of my hand... I'll add it here. I think it would have been fine without stitches. Photo belongs to Pretty.

It must be deep to need stitches. I could just imagine your daughter panicking. I would, too, if I were her. I am glad it got treated immediately without blood loss. It would have been disastrous if the glass shard hit one of your veins are arteries. Get well soon.

@DaddyEvil I have never seen a lawn mover with glass in it..........so ....I cannot comment on that. If it did have a glass part .....I would feel sorry for it....DE is good at abusing things.

@vandana7 Glass in a lawnmower? I leaned against the garage door. It had a broken window from the last hail storm. My hand touched the broken window.

Oh! It must have been deep to need stitches. Glad that it got treated in time and avoid too much of blood loss. If some vein or artey would have got cut, it would have been bad. Who drove to the ER? Did you call some help? Take care.

Thank you. I drove us to the ER after washing the cut with dishwashing liquid and letting cold water rinse the cut for a few minutes. I was dizzy and didn't want to walk the three blocks to the ER.

@DaddyEvil Oh! You are brave. Though that's a bit risky too to drive while feeling dizzy. Good that ER was not too far and you could safely make it in time. Hope that you are feeling better.

@allknowing I know... the best part is that the nurse told her she'd have to do the dishes for a week. Pretty hates washing dishes and normally just piles her dishes in the sinks until I do them.

I am not sure how to respond to this, be careful buddy and glad daughter was there to make sure you OK. I feel I am supposed to trash talk you, like that is what you want, but I cannot, glad you OK and good daughter, everyone has days like this believe it or not but many do not have good people looking out for them.

@DaddyEvil The important people always know and thats the way I do things too, make jokes when bad things happen, this way people respond more calmly and you can get fixed right in theory.

@DaddyEvil That is one of the questions they have to ask now. It's routine, so get used to it. I was asked that with my rash ordeal. I'm sorry you cut your arm and had to get stitches. I'm glad you went to have it checked out. How many stitches did you get?

Thank you... I'd taken a Meclizine tablet when I woke up that morning but it had been a long day and the tablet was wearing off. I'm not normally awake that long but we needed to get the lawnmower put together and the yard mowed. We were lucky the older couple had asked their nephew if he'd come over and mow their yard and he mowed ours at the same time. Honestly, the cut never did start hurting.

Thank you. The nurse told Pretty not to let me get my hand soaked for the next seven days and I told Pretty that means she'll have to do the dirty dishes until the stitches come out... That thought took the smug look off her face.

According to the nurse, it was deep but it never hurt. I still think it would have sealed and healed well on its own... Pretty always wants me to go to the ER and I usually ignore her and everything turns out fine. She wouldn't stop this time.

@LadyDuck I don't understand why some people do that... Humans didn't have ER for thousands of years and still got cut and hurt without rushing to a doctor or a hospital. We will still survive without them in most cases now.

Thanks... The most entertaining part was the drunk lady brought in by police right after we got to the ER... She had some very colorful language and the police weren't happy with her... I don't know what she did but she was funny until they took her to the back room to run a pee test and she had to have a nurse help her hit the cup. (The nurse wasn't a happy camper at that point. I can't say I blame her, either. )

Oh, dear. I’m sorry this happened. The way you often lose your balance, I’ve been concerned about you operating a mower. I am sorry you needed stitches! Did you drive yourself to the ER? The only positive thing I can think of is now Pretty will probably have to do the dishes!! Take care, DE!!

@MarieCoyle The best part is we actually have the money to go out to eat for several days. Pretty agreed we could spend some money buying pizza and McDonalds since it will mean she doesn't have dishes to wash. Normally, she does leave dirty dishes in the sink, even if I'm sick and throwing up. She hates washing dishes!

Normally, I wouldn't be mowing when I'm dizzy and I wasn't mowing this time. I only started the mower because Pretty couldn't... Thank you for your concern and yes, I drove us to the ER after I cleaned the cut and let cold water rinse over it for a few minutes then wrapped a paper towel around it to catch the blood. I couldn't dribble blood all over the car. You should have seen how quickly Pretty lost that smug look when the nurse said I couldn't wash dishes for a week.

@DaddyEvil The only problem with this is, I can see you still having to cook, and not having anything clean to cook with or a plate or a fork to eat it with...don't let her save them up for when YOU can do them! I am glad you went though, and I do hope it heals quickly.

I would’ve panicked too if I saw someone wounded like that—especially someone close. My first instinct would also be to rush to the ER, just to make sure everything’s okay and nothing gets worse. Even if it seems like it could be handled at home, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Hope your hand heals up quickly!

Thank you. I'm not used to going to the ER for cuts and scrapes... The ER is expensive. Our insurance will pay for the ER visit but I still don't like wasting money when I could have handled the cut hand at home.

No, we're only two blocks from the hospital but didn't feel up to walking with me being dizzy before the accident. I drove us there after cleaning the cut and wrapping paper towels around my wrist. Pretty ran some clear tape around the paper towels to keep them in place while I drove. Strangely enough, it didn't hurt at all until this morning. Now it aches... I only got 3 stitches. The nurse said I cut deep.

@much2say The nurse sewed me up with needle and thread. Pretty changed the bandage every afternoon for me. I had the same type of stitches when I was a kid but mom wouldn't take the stitches out. She insisted we go back to the doctor to have them removed.
