I might have to wear a Kilt.

June 22, 2025 8:23pm CST
I might have to wear a kilt. And I really do not want to do it. We have been invited to a wedding and the dress code for men is a Kilt. I vowed I would never wear one. I have never worn one. To be honest texts have been flying around from other invited guests saying they don't want the expense of getting a Kilt either. It's not just the Kilt- shirt, jacket, socks, sporran, shoes etc too. Even worse, they are sending out a list of wedding presents they want. Sorry, not happening. You don't ask for wedding presents on a list you send people Yvonne said we should decline the invitation. A few others have said they are not going either. This is small town rural Scotland, no gift lists, no mandatory Kilts!! So it's a no from us, hope you get all the gifts you beg for. Look at it, it's hideous, and one cannot wear underwear under neath it Perish the thought

They should buy them if that's what they want. To an extent I understand a gift list. Especially if they are already in a home.

Aye well Eva I understand it also. Bloody cheeky putting a great big huge smart TV on the list. Didn't see people lining up to give them that. I had no idea that our national look stupid attire was so expensive

That just seems rather rude to me, I could understand if they requested formal wear but a kilt??? You have answered one question I'd wondered about, now I know ..... kilt = no undies

The Groom is a good friend of mine. And he is aware that most of the guys he has invited cannot afford to hire outfits - have to travel 30 miles for that as no men's outfitter here. Not going,

Yeah. I'd probably decline as well. Too many demands. I declined a wedding recently that required guests be vaccinated for covid. I said thanks, but no thanks, and wished them well but stayed home.

Oh my! Something that took off here last year is for wedding and/or baby showers, the bride or mother to be gives the wardrobe color for guests in their invitation. Oh no, I'm not wearing what you want me to to your shower. You should be glad that I came! Not dictate what people wear!!

@Ineeddentures I don't get how they think they can control their guests! I hated registries when they started using them for baby showers. Bridal showers, I can see since you know what kind of this or that the bride and groom want. But, baby showers with $45 outfits for a baby or $350 carseat is a bit much to ask for.

I wouldn't go to a baby shower either Heard that they can be expensive People dictating stuff like this can expect me not to attend.

It was rude to ask for presents sending the invitation, even more rude to say mandatory Kilts. Yvones is right, decline the invitation.

I think that these days a list of wanted gifts is commonplace. I will not subscribe to it. The Kilts I sort of understand because they want the perfect wedding photos and it's Scotland so what better than a group of guys and women lol, dressed in Tartan photographed in the grounds of a big castle Not for us.

Putting out a gift list seems to be pretty common nowadays. I know a lady whose invitation to a wedding stated that everyone should wear dark green. I think she is declining too.

No not at all. The men who wear kilts are as real as me and the next guy. When our national football team go and play in a foreign land literally thousands of my fellow Scots wear the Kilt. At New Year, Kilts are every where you look I have never felt the need to express my patriotism by wearing a Kilt. I simply do not like them And I will not wear one, ever. A real man is not defined by what they wear.

If my husband were to buy one it would be the Clarke tartan. I used to know what mine would be. I have forgotten. I have Clark in my lineage, but also Morris. My son-in-law has a kilt. My kiddos used to perform in a melodramatic live steel group. It seems to me the fabric would be hot. A gift list suggestion in my opinion is just that, a suggestion. We have "registries" here that serve the same purpose. It is much less tacky than just upright asking for cash.

Clarke traditional tartan
Oh Heather I thought it was just a suggestion list as well But I was wrong These people actually want guests to purchase the stuff on the list I was a bit dubious about this, so I dig a bit deeper and it seems that Wedding Gift Lists are all the rage now. Retailers make them up so the people getting married can choose what they want for their home, and the guests then buy it for them or contribute them cost in cash. Well not me. It's not happening Clarke Tartan, I found it, There are two, traditional which is a lighter colour and modern which seems a totally different design. A guy called Stephen Clarke is our Scotland Football team manager and he is from Saltcoats in Ayrshire - relative maybe?

I have a little bit of Scottish on my Mom's side. My son loves to golf and I have told him that I would love to see him wear a kilt one day. He just laughs at me.

I can relate to your son perfectly well. Please don't advise he plays golf in kilt. They tend to get blown up and expose the bits
