1965

I could talk forever about the 1960s and 70s; but here's some trivia about 1965: Minimum wage was $1.25 - I worked at the library from the age of 14-17. Because I was a student, I was paid $.70 per hour. The college kids received minimum wage. I wonder how they got away with that? A postage stamp was ***$.05***. Today they are $.76. Gold was an amazing $35.12 per ounce. It is now over $3,000.00 per ounce. I wish I would have invested in gold!!! A dozen eggs was $.53. I have heard of egg prices of $5.00 per dozen and more today. A movie ticket was $1.00. How I remember those days when we'd go see any movie we wanted to for a buck...and sometimes a double feature. Top on the charts were the Beatles singing Yesterday and the Rolling Stones with I Can't Get No Satisfaction. I graduated from high school in June of 1965. Do you have any memories from 1965? Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how one might want to look at it, 1965 was before my time, so I have no memories of it. But it definitely seemed like an interesting time. Minimum wage was $3.35 when I started working, but my first job paid student's wages at $2.50 when I was 14.

@LindaOHio I do remember the 70s, but I was a kid. I wouldn't have known if it was good or bad because I was a kid and had nothing to worry about. lol

I played "I Can't Get No Satisfaction", so much that I consumed my vinyl record. Well, now I call YouTube and I listen to it. My brother was more into The Beatles, I liked more The Rolling Stones.

Let's see . . The car looks familiar. I was twelve years old when you graduated. Or almost twelve, my birthday is in August. Seventh grade. I was a sad and scrawny kid with a younger brother and a two year old sister.

Well, yeah we lived in a house next to the highway then. I went one year to a school that had a hill in the background. In the winter we would slide down the hill on cafeteria trays at recess time. You know fun stuff that would never be allowed today. Poor kids!

We often talk about such comparisons. And it's always fun to compare two different time periods. As you mentioned eggs, we used to talk about rice. I used to mock my mom, saying, you should have stored houseful of rice back then. Today we wouldn't need to buy such costly rice. (It's another thing that the rice would have rotten by now). I also told her that you should at least have bought gold then. Gold wouldn't have rotted. But then those days there was money only to make both ends meet. Those were such days. Though we can afford a lot of things today, the time won't come back

Yup, 1965 brings back some really good memories for me too. Gosh those prices compared to today are unreal. I graduated in 1964, married in 1965 and had my first child in 1966. The good old days

I think the biggest change has been in the price of things and of wages, etc. 1965 seems a long time ago now.

Not sure of the year but 65-68, one of those were the lucky years in our town. Going to the movies was only $.25. Kids were dropped off in groups to watch the movies and they could stay for the next feature if they wanted to. kids were well mannered and behaved back then.

I was but a young lad in 1965. I don’t think I had any concept of money and the cost of things. My only concern then was sweets and watching kids tv. I think it was mainly things like Watch With Mother and The Magic Roundabout that I recall, but memories of Doctor Who haunt me to this day.
