How did you feel about the outdoors as a child?

As a child you couldn’t keep me indoors….until summer came. Constant 100+ (F) temperatures will take it out of a little girl who takes after her mama when it comes to heat tolerance. As I became a teenager I liked the outdoors less and less. Now that I’m older, when my back is not killing me I enjoy a walk with a breeze. This picture is of my nieces and nephew on one of the trails at the George Washington Carver Monument (and museum). My sister took them on a field trip to Missouri to visit. They just love the outdoors, especially Amyra (the oldest). I hope they keep that into adulthood. *Hudson is in a medical stroller due to his rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. Walking long distances for him is painful. Did you like the outdoors back then? Do you still? I can think of a couple of you who absolutely love it.

I'm part of that generation that got kicked out of the house in the morning and wasn't allowed back in until the street lights came on. We drank water from hoses, rode bikes everywhere, and I don't even know if we ever had lunch. These days I like the beach and sitting by the pool. I've never had any interest in camping. Going for a walk bores the hell out of me which is why I never liked using a treadmill at the gym.

I was forced to go camping twice with my church youth camp. I dreaded it so much my parents paid me to go. Why, I don’t know as I did what I was told. Maybe they thought I’d enjoy it if I were being paid. It was suitably horrible to me. My walks are generally walking the dog, which I don’t mind three out of the four seasons. One summer when I had my late dog, Annabelle, I took her outside. She looked at me, looked around, and ran right back up the stairs. In that moment I appreciated her so much.

@AmbiePam I enjoyed church camp myself. Of course, I never went when I was a kid.

When I was growing up we basically lived outdoors. I was lucky enough to live in a countrified area so we had plenty of woods to explore, riding bikes was our basic mode of transportation (parents rarely drove us anywhere) and the neighborhood kids were our friends. I loved being outdoors. It's funny how life changes and I always pictured myself living somewhere close to the beach. I'm hours away from the beach (lol) and surrounded by farms (which I love). My tolerance for the heat isn't what it used to be but I blame that on being older.

I loved the outdoors in my younger years. I still do in my old age, but now, I just want the peace and calm that Mother Nature brings.

I loved it but I wasn’t allowed out a lot because of my allergies. As I got older I was allowed to play outside more as long as I didn’t come in sneezing or wheezing. I was outside most of my trip, so yes, I still enjoy it…as long as I don’t come in sneezing or wheezing.

Once I learned to ride a bike and got one of my own, I loved going for bike rides down the road when I was a kid. With no distance in mind how far to ride, just until I knew it was time to turn around and go back again. That was how I spend some of my summer days. Alot of them before I got sick the summer that I turned 12 years old, were spent out in the bean fields. We, my 3 brothers, and mother and myself, would be outside at 8am and hoeing the weeds until I was allowed to walk back to the house at 11:30 to turn the potatoes on for dinner-we had meat, potatoes and a vegetable at the noon meal. We were back in the field from 12:30 until about 4:30 or so. They were long and hot days, but if it had rained and my Dad couldn't work the land, he would join us. I loved it when he was with us, he made it fun. We would sing as we walked the rows, plus Dad would be sure to sharpen the hoes before we returned to the field in the afternoon, so the work was easier.

That is amazing. You and my dad would have a lot in common with the kind of work you did in the fields. Only my dad would go to California with his dad, and four siblings picking potatoes and eventually cotton. You know, I just found out he and his dad and siblings would stay in the immigrant camps the summers they worked, and I now understand why he told us we were spoiled when we were younger.

@AmbiePam Have you considered sharing these little stories with Amyra, and seeing if she could put together a family history in a story type of narrative? My Grandpa did this, and it is such a great reminder of how things have improved and times and lives changed as a result. Having it in my Grandpa's own words remind me of how formal people used to speak, which is another nice aspect of it being told like a story.

In my youth, I would take off my shoes on the last day of school and I wouldn't put them back on until school started in the fall. My parents had a cabin in Northern Wisconsin in the middle of nothing but lakes and woods. I spent all day and most of the night outside. After I got married, we went camping a lot and when we had kids, they enjoyed camping too. We took hikes and explored the Olympic Peninsula and traveled to the states near us after we got the motor home. I have gardens and I used to spend hours each day tending to it. After getting sick, I don't even like to walk to the mailbox. All those years that I loved the outdoors have faded. I prefer the safety and security my couch affords me, lol.

I enjoyed the outdoors too growing up, though being more of an introvert, I often played alone or with just one or two close playmates. It was peaceful that way. Now that I’m older and retired, I still appreciate the outdoors—but I prefer to share it with my wife and son whenever we get the chance. There’s something calming about being out in nature, especially with the people who matter most.

I loved the outdoors when I was a kid. We lived in a city and I could not wait to be at our grandmother farm house to stay out all the day long. I like less now, I am well at home.

@AmbiePam Here it’s impossible to find a summer day that isn’t hot. I’d rather do the yard work in cooler weather.

I need the outdoors. One of the criteria for us when I went shopping for our final house was having a decent sized property. I was born in a rural area and part of my early and teen years was spent on a twenty acre farm. When I was in my mid 40s my Mom and I hiked many woodsy trails together. I could keep on going......

@AmbiePam Ha ha. I miss that Farm and those days of easily grabbing a heavy saddle. I had no fear of falling off a horse then. Stupid me.

I always wanted to go out as a child and young girl but was restricted by my parents. In India parents restricted girls moving out of the house in our times because of safety issues. I do go out now for shopping but do feel lazy to go out.

@AmbiePam That's true. Young girls in India still can't venture out alone. Parents fear kidnap and rape.

I was outside from sunrise to when the street lights came on. Like Chicaa, I drank water from a hose and rode my bike everywhere. Now it's hard to pry me out of the house.

I enjoy being outdoors, even during the hot summer months. It beats being cooped up inside during the cold winter months. Walks, going to the beach, playing golf or tennis are some of my favorite outdoor activities.

I actually belong to the generation of kids who played outside — games like tag, running around, biking, playing house, and board games with other kids in the neighborhood. We didn’t have all this tech back then. Even the TV was black and white, and we could only watch for a limited time. When my mom said TV time was over, that was it — no arguments. We really listened to our parents. Totally different from how kids are now, always on phones or sitting in front of a computer for hours, and they want to be the ones followed. Some even get mad when a parent says no. Outdoors was life for us kids back then.
