I Didn't Order This.

If you make an order for grocery delivery and it comes with extra items that you didn't order or pay for, what is your first reaction? Do you shout with glee for the free food? Do you contact the store and inform them immediately? Do you feel bad but put away the freebies anyway? If you are shorted items it's likely that you'll contact them and ask for a refund. So with items that you didn't order, do you contact them immediately or later or not at all? Do you put your toilet paper over the top of the roll or drape it behind?

I'd contact the store immediately... And toilet paper always comes over the top or I can't find the end of it. (Pretty doesn't always pay attention and I end up switching it.)

I'm with you on both. I got frozen buttermilk vanilla waffles, a salad mix and a bucket of potato salad this time. I got microwave popcorn and stuff for s'more last time and two racks of pork ribs the time before. I contacted the store right away, they thanked me for being honest and said I was free to eat the products, donate them or discard them.

@Vikingswest1 One of us always has to physically go to the stores here. Nothing delivers. Our city is too small for deliveries. (Except today the pharmacy said they'd deliver our prescriptions on Thursday and we had to be home, then told me that they deliver between 11 am and 4 pm... That's fine, we rarely leave the house anymore. I've been out of some of my prescription for two weeks and have been feeling the lack.)

@DaddyEvil I am lucky. I live in a small town too but three major grocery stores delivers and my pharmacy delivers too. The pharmacy delivers for free, the grocery stores charge a fee. That can be dangerous to go without prescriptions for two weeks. Mine are delivered using the USPS. Maybe you could call to see if they can mail your prescriptions. The worst they can say is no. Worth a try.

I admit I would keep the items …. Toilet paper goes over the top ….its easier to find the end and rip it off the roll.

Best part is, if you notify them, they always let you keep them anyway. I have received some pretty good freebies over the past few years. I agree. Over the top works best.

@Traceyjayne Yes. Once the store loses the chain of possession, the product becomes a liability.

@Vikingswest1 I have returned things in the past , either in person or phoned but I have always been told to keep the items ….in the great scheme of things I guess it’s easier for the stores to replace the items for the correct person and not have to worry about returns. Also food items that were kept in a fridge or freezer would be thrown away if they were returned as the store couldn’t sell them again as they couldn’t guarantee that the food had been kept at the correct temperature. I have been told that by a member of staff and it does make sense.

I take for granted that everyone can get delivery. That's too bad. Honestly, I'd rather pick out my own groceries but I am currently unable to drive. My wife can't drive due to an amputation and the fact that my cars are manual and not automatic. Not that she could drive very well before the surgery, lol. "The original patent from the 1800s for the idea for perforated toilet paper actually shows it's meant to hang over the top," explains Mr Iredale, whose team tests whitegoods, laundry products and toilet paper. Indeed, back in 1891 the inventor of perforated toilet paper, Seth Wheeler, illustrated the loo roll with the paper going up and over the roll. Hahah

That's what I did. In fact this is the third time this has happened. Each time I contacted the store, they said I could keep the items. I wonder if frozen buttermilk vanilla waffles are good? I'll find out tomorrow, lol.

@JudyEv You're right. It might be partly because the chain of possession wasn't kept secure. If I tampered with, didn't refrigerate properly or otherwise mishandled the products, it could be a liability for the store if someone got sick after consuming the item. Me? Since they gave them to me, I'll be eating waffles for breakfast, potato salad with lunch and a salad with dinner, lol.

@Vikingswest1 I suppose letting you keep the items is less trouble and less wasteful than trying to pick them up or whatever.

I'm currently unable to use my vehicles. My vision won't allow me to drive and my wife can't drive a manual transmission with one leg, lol. I'm really happy that I can have grocery and pharmacy delivery so I am very quick to contact them (online) to tell them my order included extra items. They always thank me and say I can keep it, give it away or dispose of it. When they get my order wrong, I complain right away and they fix it. When orders arrive without mistakes, I give positive feedback. The driver gets tipped either way.

@Ineeddentures Trees are renewable. Used as tp, flushed and then separated at the water treatment plant, then used for fertilizer for trees. Perfect cycle. Have you seen the US? We have more trees than we could ever use. Plus the environmentalists demand that a tree is planted for every one harvested. Ten years later, we cut then down again and plant another...

I have called the store about items received that weren't ordered, as know it could be part of somebody else's order that was in the car. I was told they would be by to pick up a box of items last year and haven't seen that person this year. I figure they were let go, as the order was slow and not correct. I did receive a refund for all the missing items.

@Vikingswest1 I haven't received many slow orders, as the store has a 2 hour window and if the order isn't here I can request a refund.

I would imagine many mistakes are made with all the orders they get. My market is always good about refunds and has allowed me to keep any extra items delivered by mistake. I DO get slow orders sometimes that won't arrive on time but not too often.

Twice now I've received an Amazon order that was short five items out of six. They gave me a refund (although I'd rather have had the missing items), but no way to pay for the one I received. I feel bad, but no way to fix it. One time I was leaving Walmart and realized I hadn't paid for some bananas. I was too exhausted to go back in the store, so I asked a woman who was heading in if she would return them. I know they'd just trash them, but I didn't want to steal some bananas.

If it is something I'll use I'm just happy and put it away. If I can't I ask neighbors or offer whatever it is on the local FB group. The store won't take returns so I don't bother contacting them. And yes I 100% ask for a refund when items are missing. The problem is that Instacart assigns shoppers like 3 orders at a time and things often get mixed up. A couple of times my whole order was delivered to an apartment in another building. I told them to reshop it and somehow (I don't even remember how) I wound up finding it at someone's door a few buildings over. Double groceries.

Yay! I'll always complain if they mess things up but I'll always let them know if I received extra items. They get positive feedback when it's right plus a tip and negative feedback when it's wrong. The driver still gets a tip though. I give them the, Don't play baseball on the freeway tip, lol.

hehe, once we got some different order. the delivery guy was honest. he said "mam, we couldn't get u the small one, but we got the big, is it okay?" dude, same price and big nutelly...hahaha he was talking to my sister, she said okay. YK, they work in tight and unnecessarily strict schedule. its only right to be kind to them. not make them do double work... and besides, it was a big pack... hehe

First reaction: Hey, I got something I didn't order. If it's something I can use I'm pleasantly surprised. No, I don't contact the Supermarket but of course would return the items to the delivery person if contacted. I'm being charged extra for delivery, so I'm not going out of my way for their mistake. The person whose items were not received will do what I do, if I didn't receive something, call and get a credit. I don't feel bad. The delivery person should be more organized. Toilet paper- in the past under, now- on top. Seems more efficient.

They have always said that I could just keep them. I have had groceries delivered here for a couple of years now. Since I don't drive, it's really nice that they'll deliver them. They do a pretty good job picking out produce too. I'm usually picky when it comes to produce.

I haven't gotten any free items with a grocery delivery but I'd like to think I'd contact the store and let them know. Last week I ordered cherries but grapes by mistake. They credited me the $$ but I got to keep the grapes. Win win for me as I do like grapes. Over the top when it comes to toilet paper.

I used to tell the delivery service or the grocery store, but they didn't ever do anything about it and just told me to keep it. Because apparently they cant take it back. So if it's something super expensive I'll tell them. But if not I just keep it. A couple weeks ago, they were out of the 12 packs of Dr Pepper we usually get, and the driver substituted it with like 3 different packs of varying sizes of doctor pepper, a 12 back of Dr pepper blackberry and a 12 pack of doctor thunder, and he said the app let him do that. So I took it as freebies .
