Let’s Talk About Waffle House

I’m not sure exactly where Waffle House reaches. Any Canadians know about the Waffle House? It’s a restaurant that serves breakfast items all day, as well as regular American fare like burgers. It’s along the lines of diner food.
Now, here’s the thing you should expect when you go to Waffle House: you’re going to see a fight. It’s open 24 hours so obviously most altercations happen at night. However, you get a couple during the day too. One might say well, a 24 hour diner should expect that. No, no. Where I grew up, Waffle House was in the midst of a dozen restaurants on one street, and two of the others were open 24 hours. Those two others were not known for fights. Our family never went to the Waffle House.
Around the age of ten, I visited my grandparents and they wanted to go to the Waffle House. With trepidation, I went. We ate, and there were no fights! I marveled at that. It was then I realized not all Waffle Houses had pugilistic DNA. And sure, my grandparents lived in a better neighborhood than we did. But like I said, those other 24 hour restaurants in my town didn’t have the police making routine patrols.
I heard a joke the other night on TV…about the Waffle House, and the constant fights. Still yet, Waffle Houses are all over the country. So apparently possible impending violence doesn’t scare too many people away.
Have you been daring enough to go to a Waffle House?

I'm just curious to know why there's a fight in Waffle House as often as it is? Is it always full of people? What are they fighting for?

@Nakitakona No, they do not offer liquor. I’m saying people drink at home or out partying , then after being out all night they’ll go to eat, be drunk, and start a fight.

I don’t know, I really don’t. I think the most fights happen at night because maybe people have been drinking, and they get short tempered. Perhaps the service is slow because it’s busiest at night. They have cheaper food, so it attracts all kinds of people.

We have them in both Louisiana and Mississippi and both places they are last resort places to eat. We did go to one in McComb last year and my husband said that would be his last visit there. The food was very greasy and disgusting. We haven't encountered any fights, just bad food!

I have heard of the reputation for years. I doubt that the reputation would stop me. The closest Waffle House is 1,050 miles away from me. There are exactly zero restaurants open 24 hours a day. No supermarkets either. Just gas stations.
The Chevron station near me has the best chicken strips that I've ever had in my life.
They sell sushi too that people love. Other people, not me people.

I suppose that because they have altered their surroundings, the stigma associated with being known as a trouble-prone area is gradually fading. They should always address that kind of impression because a company's image can make or break it. Having such a reputation can also be detrimental in the long run.

Before the pandemic, Pretty and I ate at a Waffle House in Springfield all the time. We never saw or heard about fights there... It's one of the places we want to go back to when we have the money and I can see to drive up there. (It's about 75 miles from our house on the far side of Springfield. We normally go there with friends who live in Springfield.)

@AmbiePam Pretty always got pancakes and whatever went with them. I always got an omelet with tons of meat in it. I think about those omelets all the time! (I can't flip eggs to make an omelet. That's why I talk about making scrambled eggs with "stuff" mixed in. They're still good but they don't taste like an omelet!)

I think we went to one once when we attended a wedding in Maryland. It was mid-morning and I don't remember anything special about it. We don't have them here in NJ.
We do have 24 hour diners though. I spent many a 2-3am at one eating disco fries but I never saw a fight in any of them. Pretty impressive when you consider how many bars and nightclubs were just over the bridge.

I grew up in Oregon and don't remember a Waffle House. I'll have to look it up to find out if they are in this area. Never thought that a restaurant could be known for fights. My parents would have kept 3 kids out of it, as we are close in age.

@AmbiePam No locations in Oregon or California, so won't be going there. Most of my life have lived in these two states. Have traveled through a lot of states during my younger years, but now the traffic in California is bad.

I have been to a Waffle House once traveling through Kentucky. My take is truckers love the place. Me, not so much. I'd prefer International House of Pancakes instead (IHOP).

We don’t have any Waffle Houses here. They are mostly a southern thing. We used to stop at them while driving through the south while on vacation. There are IHOP’s here and there but no Waffle House.
