Hubby's New Toy!

And it isn't a BOAT!! I know that is what most of you would be thinking. He found an industrial sewing machine for sale on Marketplace that was right outside of Baton Rouge. He has been browsing them for about a month now, but this is the first one he has an a big interest in going to look at. What does he want an Industrial sewing machine for? That part does have to do with boats. He wants it to redo upholstery for the boats he gets in and needs it. That is much more cost effective than buying new seating to put in. This one came out of Tailoring shop that went out of business. The lady lost her husband and decided to close her shop. The man that my husband bought this one from had bought two of her machines and after several weeks decided that one would be enough for his business. He has an automotive shop and uses it for car upholstery. The machine is in very good shape and we got about an hour of instruction as to how to use it before we left. Now we wait to see if the hubby is really going to do this or will he expect me to take up this hobby? He has been watching YouTube videos, so he just may surprise me! Have you ever sewn or made upholstery? Photo Credit: Pixabay, Public Domain

I have sewed some simple things in the past with my grandmother. Never developed an interest for sewing. Just got interested in embroidery that I still do on few things

I used to sew a bit and then I lost interest. I tried to pick it back up after my stroke, but instructions on the pattern I had was way out there, so I hung it up!

I know ...embroidery gets appreciation from more than one person ...and visual satisfaction to us, stitching...not that much. LOL

That sounds like it could be a worthwhile investment. Hope it's easy to use. I've never used an industrial sewing machine but did enjoy sewing on my trusty Singer years ago.

This think is SO heavy. It's made out of cast iron! He wants to put it upstairs. I don't know if he will make it up the stairs with it!! Right now it is on the kitchen floor. He took it out of the table it sits in to get it inside and out of the high humidity here.

@kareng it must be very big and heavy. Hope he doesn't hurt himself trying to get it upstairs.

I gave up sewing years ago. My machine set up too long and needed servicing, which I never had done since I didn't plan on sewing anymore.

@kareng I gave up on the needlework because my arthritis was too bad in my hands. My sewing machine seized up; and I didn't buy another one.

Sewing and making upholstery would be WAY outside of my wheelhouse. But it's good he can do it, because it really will save him a ton of money. Great find, and I hope he gets lots of use out of it.

We will see if he is able to do it soon! And yes, it would save a lot. A set of 2 back to back seats (a total of 4 seats is about $750 now.

I used to sew quite a bit. I have two foot rests waiting to be recovered, but that does not require sewing, only staples.

I haven’t looked at a sewing machine (industrial or otherwise) since home economics class in the 7th grade!

I was exempt in sewing after I did my first project because I already knew how to sew! My teacher let me bring in my project that I finished in one night at home, which was a coverall outfit for my little brother. She said that since it was more advanced that what she asked for I had passed the sewing session and didn't need to do more! She was a super nice teacher!

Great that he found one with a story too. if he's redoing boat upholstery, it'll definitely save a lot compared to buying new seats.

We had the upholstery made for us when we fitted out a big bus as a motor-home. I'm useless at sewing.

I have redone chair seats, like a wooden chair with a cloth type of seat, but that doesn't require sewing. I redid my grandmother's little chair she called a ''nice sitting chair'' in a rose type of print, but it required me to carefully measure the fabric and then use those tiny tack things to put it together. There were a few places I had to hand stitch. I had removed the fabric that was original to the chair, and used it for a pattern to follow it as closely as I could. But I have never used one of those upholstery sewing machines. It would be fun to try one. I hope it works out well!

What a good idea to do that himself and get that machine Karen! You two are so industrious and resourceful. I have never had anything to do with upholstery. Good luck to him.

I am waiting to see if he sees this project through. It may be a one time deal and be labeled a hassle and not worth the time and money for material to do the job vs. buying ready made. We will see!
