Proof That You’re Famous

Howdy from Norman, Oklahoma! I had a great day with Rogers and Route 66, and I’ll drag you along. Let’s start with Route 66. I stopped to get a look at one of the countless tourist trap things along the road. Afterwards, I found a small stretch of the original highway (and it felt like it, too: extremely narrow, and some potholes that have probably been there since 1927!). This sign jumped out at me. Paul McCartney was HERE!!! Proof that you’re famous: they put a sign up where a celebrity stopped. Yeah (yeah, yeah), Paul isn’t just “any” celebrity, I know. But I did find this sort of funny. Very sweet, too: the fact that one of the most famous and most popular musicians on earth would be driving down this rickety old road, stopping to make sure he really was on an original portion of the Mother Road, speaks volumes as to the draw of Route 66. Photo is of the sign placed where the resident of Arcadia, Oklahoma had a brief encounter with Sir Paul, and the explanation behind the meeting.

You can sure tell the difference between the old and new. How odd to find such a sign.

I know. It’s quite funny, in a way; then again, Route 66 has so many oddities as roadside attractions (as you may remember from my trip through Illinois last year, or you will see in the recap from this trip) that it’s perfectly normal to be there.

I was on bits and parts of 166 before, but it was at night, so don't recall any of the touristy stuff unfontunately.

Those were the days when people didn’t stay out at night, so most of the touristy things were closed at sundown.

That’s neat! I saw him in person at the Grand Ole Opry in 1974, but he didn’t sing. He was just introduced to the audience by Roy Acuff. By the way, I like that tribute to Chuck Mangione you have in your avatar currently!

I would have had to stop, too. How neat that the sign is there in such a remote area. I believe you about the potholes. Everywhere I go, potholes!

You can definitely tell the difference almost immediately when getting on the original road: not maintained at all, much more narrow than the rest of the roads, etc. But still a treasure to drive!

@MarieCoyle — I have only driven Joliet to Springfield, Illinois nonstop. I’d love to drive it all, too.

@FourWalls It would be really cool to drive all of route 66! One of my cousins did that, he had a blast.

That sign is so cute! I haven’t seen it before, but then I don’t remember if I’ve been in Acadia. I know I’d remember the sign.

It's amazes me that even today he's still popular, he's 83 and still going strong, so's Mick Jagger and a few others from those days.

They are a legendary band for me. Even if I was not born to know them that much, I can see how their songs are still played at the present time.

I know what you mean. I was like that with Frank Sinatra: the heyday of his popularity was long before I was born, but I certainly understand why he was popular, and still is!

I've seen lots of Route 66 signs when driving different places in Missouri and Oklahoma. I wouldn't have paid attention to the sign for Paul McCartney...

Pop’s (just up the road from this, I’ll discuss it later) was very busy, so yes, there are lots of people still driving along Route 66.

I didn't know Sir Paul traveled any further than New York or LA. I remember going to a touristy spot on Route 66. I had a banana split for dinner.

My “live” encounter with him was when Roy Acuff introduced him at the Grand Ole Opry while he was vacationing in Nashville. Sure, he’s gone further than New York or L.A.

I don’t know how new the sign is. I’d think the citizen involved called the mayor immediately afterward and said, “Paul McCartney just stopped me on the old 66! Put a sign up!”
