No, this one isn’t for heavy duty dancing. That’s the point of this month’s countdown: to make it up to one of our myLotters (@rebelann ), who’s had “too much” dancing from too many of my songs. So, for this month, it’s hits that are slow dances and toe tappers but not get-on-the-dance-floor numbers. Here’s today’s song. Daydream Believer - The Monkees Bombs away, dream babies! For you who are old enough to remember, there was a one-hit wonder in 1978, “Gold” by John Stewart. (The album it was from was called Bombs Away Dream Babies.) It gained considerable attention and airplay because of the “Elton John effect”: NOT that Elton was singing on it, but there was a time when everything he sang on got airplay (see: “Bad Blood” and “Whatever Gets You Thru the Nite”). In the late 70s, the “Elton John effect” became the Stevie Nicks effect. She sang backup on Kenny Loggins’ “Whenever I Call You Friend” and BANG, it was a hit. Then she sang backup on this, and BANG it was a hit. Now, that was far from John Stewart’s only success. Later on, Rosanne Cash had a hit with a song he wrote called “Runaway Train.” Stewart was also a member of the Kingston Trio in the early 1960s. Oh…and he wrote this song. The Prefab Four, with Davy Jones singing lead, did a terrific job with this song. Later, Anne Murray covered it in country music and made it a hit again. Enjoy this flashback. Daydream Believer Written by John Stewart Recorded by The Monkees From The Birds, The Bees, & The Monkees, 1967 Without dollar one to spend:

I think @Vandana7 would agree that this qualifies as a "happy song." Now let me get back to Hurricane Party, by James McMurtry. Bah.

James’ “Crazy Wind” should make her happy, it’s so upbeat.

Yeah, I had too much to dance to this year, nice to get to sway for a while ...... if only this plastic chair were sturdier, I'z gonna melt the stupid thing after I find a better one. Love this song, it was one of the few Monkey's tunes I liked

I'm lucky, I don't get headaches, not even with old timers country western or worse high pitched opera by someone with a bad voice

Make something nice out of it, like plastic cutlery. Glad you enjoyed the song. I'm so worried that I have songs on the list that you'll say give you a headache.

I always enjoyed The Monkees. I remember their TV show was on my Saturday line up of shows I would watch. This song was done very well by them. I enjoyed Micky's whackiness.

And now wacky Micky is the only one left. What I enjoy in the video is how Nesmith's tie is, I'd say deliberately, hanging over the guitar strings while he's mimicking playing.

I don’t think I’ve slow danced since my heyday back in the late 70’s. Back then I used to regularly frequent the discos and the night always ended with a slow dance (if you could find a willing partner that is). Saying that, nowadays when I do dance, they are always slow, whatever record is playing. Who doesn’t like The Monkees? I remember watching the tv show. It was more than a bit crazy, but the music was fabulous. Recently I’ve heard “a little bit me, a little bit you” more than a little bit on Boom radio over here. Always makes me smile.

One of the channels, I think VH-1, paid tribute to their show for, in essence, starting the video era. Most of their episodes looked like music videos (or videos looked like one of their episodes).

That song brings back memories. I watched the show and had the biggest crush on Davy Jones as a kid.

The success of the Monkees was always interesting to me considering they were really just a made up band of sorts. I mean, in the beginning they didn't even really play their instruments. The recordings were done by studio musicians. They eventually did get some chops, but their start makes their story an interesting one.

The only one with real musical talent was Nesmith, who wrote Linda Ronstadt’s first hit, “Different Drum.”
