Hey, how did this not end up in the top ten? I don’t know, but at least it made the list. “The list” this month is for @rebelann who joked about rocking too hard to some of the songs in my countdowns. Next month, I get my revenge. Meanwhile, today, mellow out! Time Passages - Al Stewart Al Stewart just turned 80 on September 5, so you bet I’ll celebrate his birthday with a song! You may only know two songs by him (this one and “Year of the Cat”), but I found him well worth investigating. I mean, anyone who writes a ten-minute song based on the writings of Nostradamus is okay with me! This album, in addition to the “hits” (this one and “Song on the Radio”), had songs about Sir Thomas More (“A Man for All Seasons”) and the French Revolution (“The Palace of Versailles”). You know, typical rock and roll subject matter. I love the sax, I love Stewart’s soft spoken Scottish accent, and I love pretty much everything on this album. Time Passages Written by Al Stewart and Peter White Recorded by Al Stewart From Time Passages, 1978 I know you’re in there:

Yep. This one's a thumbs up. Always liked this one. Looking at the album cover, it makes me wonder if Van Halen saw that and derived their logo from that. Looks quite similar.

@FourWalls Well, they did a lot of covers. Many have suggested Eddie's tapping wasn't original. But...they cashed a LOT of checks either way. I'd like to enjoy their success, that's for sure.

@porwest — John Hartford had a great remark about Earl Scruggs: “No, he wasn’t the first three-finger banjo picker; however, if it wasn’t for Earl, nobody would be asking who was.” Same with Eddie.

@LindaOHio — I saw that. Also saw that the last surviving member of Buddy Holly’s Crickets passed away. Haven’t seen the McCartney band list. He’s not singing well anymore, so he needs the backup.

@FourWalls Sorry about the Crickets. Yes, my high school chum in London saw PM in concert. He should have retired.

Al is currently on his farewell tour here in the UK, so it’s fitting you are playing one of his songs.

He’s 80, he deserves to retire. Heck, I retired at 59.
