One thing men do I cannot stand.

I am not a man basher. But there is one thing men seem to do that women do not, that is driving me nuts. First, let me say the male neighbor catty corner from me keeps his front door open. When he has his TV on, I can hear it (although it doesn’t bother me as it is usually low). But apparently, he has a cold right now. And, he is frequently “clearing” his throat if you know what I mean. I heard him outside my front door, and now he’s in his apartment, doing it again. I am so grossed out. I see and hear men do this fairly frequently (at gas stations especially).
Anyone relate? And, I apologize for this being unpleasant. But it’s driving me nuts. And, I have never seen a woman do this.

It can be quite annoying. Why in the world would he keep his front door open? That is one unpleasant individual, I suppose you cannot tell him that you would prefer he keep his door closed. I mean, I don't even know of any apartment-living people who keep their doors open.

I didn’t want to say it this way, but Lenore, I mean “clearing” the throat and uh, getting rid of it (like my front door or the gas station parking lot). I’m sorry if I grossed you out! But I’m willing to bet you’d use a tissue!
You are an absolute doll to have dog allergies and still have dogs. One more reason to love you!

@AmbiePam I know what you mean. I'm not one bit grossed out- when I was much younger I cleaned old people's bathrooms. I don't faint easily! My have to have a dog is a personal addiction. Way back when I was a teen our rescued Shelty dog saved me from a bull. Not joking. I have been paying him back through various dogs ever since.

I don’t think you got it. Or maybe you do. I obviously don’t mean that. I meant “hocking a lougie.” And pardon any incorrect spelling. I figured the parentheses on “clearing” would have established that. I’m also going to assume you don’t spit it in front of your neighbor’s front door.

What a nut...Why does he keep his door open? Does he want to get robbed? I am not sure what you can do about it other than talk to him, and if he doesn't do anything go to management, but this sounds like something they may not act on.

Does he spit the cough outside his house? That's really annoying. Men have a lot of qualities which is not acceptable.

How annoying. Maybe when it gets cold he will close the door.

I get you—it really can be unpleasant to hear, especially when it’s so constant. But since your neighbor is actually sick right now, it may help to keep in mind that it’s not something he’s doing to annoy anyone—he’s probably as uncomfortable as you are. In the meantime, you could try playing soft background music, using a fan, or even some white noise to drown it out when it gets too much. Reminding yourself that it’s only temporary might also make it easier to tolerate. Hopefully, once he recovers, you’ll have your peace back.

@AmbiePam Ah, that makes more sense now. If he’s doing it year-round, then yes, it does sound more like allergies or just a habit he’s gotten used to. I can totally understand how it would feel ten times worse when you’re sick yourself—your patience is already thin, and then hearing (and worse, seeing) that outside your own door would really push it over the edge. I think you’re right though—you’ll get over it, especially since you know it’s just one of those things he does. In the meantime, maybe keeping your door area rinsed down or adding a little air freshener near the entry might help you feel less grossed out when it happens. And hopefully, one day he’ll discover allergy meds and save you both some discomfort!

Oh, he’s not sick. He does this year round. He might very well need allergy medicine since he does this all the time.. I mainly object to him spitting it out in front of my door. I think it grossed me out the most when I’m sick. You know how sometimes you don’t feel well, and you hear one thing or smell one thing it sends you over the edge? Unfortunately, my tolerance is low. But I’ll definitely get over it.
And you give great advice!
