So, early this morning I hear crashing outside the window. It was clearly a big animal or a human..although why a human would be crashing around outside my window I would have no idea, (couldn't be good) It was too dark to see what was outside. I was assuming it was a deer though because they can be noisy and a few minutes later I heard one calling to the others so that was it for sure. Right under the window are holly bushes. They are spiky, but do have berries on this year. I wonder if they would want to eat those? They wouldn't be worth putting up with the spikes.

It is very possible that they wanted to eat the holly berries. The birds used to eat the berries of our holly tree.

Yeah, but those bushes have a lot of spiky leaves on. I don't think it would be worth it.

@snowy22315 - I had told to my husband that if we stayed, that holly tree had to go. When I had to clean under it those spikes were terrible even if I wore gloves.

Safer in the house besides deer aren't scary. What might scare me would be a bobcat staring into my window from a nearby tree, or a person of course. They don't,t belong there.

@Nevena83 What if it was something that would attack you when you opened the door? No Thanks!

@snowy22315 Yes, you're right, but I wouldn't be able to sleep until I see what's outside.

That woke you with a start. I think Holly berries are poisonous, but maybe that is just for humans. One safety tip I read years ago was if you were on the groundfloor to plant spikey shrubs under the windows to deter burglaries.

Hmm deers have very flexible tongues which can navigate around the spikes in the plants.

Dammit. I'm caught. I hope I didn't give you TOO much of a start, and from now on I will be more careful when I am doing my peeping...and yes, those spikes are treacherous. lol

I recently had the possum that comes to eat leftovers fighting with a feral cat and banging against my door, I peeked out and was glad to see both survived and parted company,

At least it was only a deer thrashing around in your bushes but it certainly would have scared me awake.

It was really loud due to the rustling leaves and the heavy weight of the deer.

I was startled to see a deer on a street the other morning when I drove to the pool. Then I remembered that yeah, this is small town America but there is both a river near by and a lake and lots of underbrush and trees. I hope the deer didn't get hit.

When I lived in southern IL. the deer ate holly berries off of our bushes, too. In fact, they ate anything and everything...leaves off of trees, garden stuff, you name it, they weren't very picky.

My mind always goes to the worst case scenario these days, even if a scenario is unlikely. I love the sight of deer.
