I've Noticed Something Odd...

I just received my next month's worth of prescription meds and all of them have 28 pills/tablets for a 31 day month. I knew I ran out of them before the end of the month but didn't think much about it. ALL of them, whether they're a single pill in a day or multiple, are based on a 28 day month. I need to call my doctor's office Monday and ask what the purpose is in shorting me medications... Very weird!

November has 30 days, do they think it's February?

@DaddyEvil It could be a 28 day cycle, but in this case your doctor should have told you.

@DaddyEvil There is no reason why you also do not get pills to cover the whole month.

@LadyDuck It COULD be but it's not... Pretty gets her pills from the same pharmacy and we're both on Medicaid. She gets a full complement of pills in each bottle.

That IS weird. Maybe you should send the doctor's office a calendar for Christmas.

Weird. Even at the very least it should be 30 for a regular month. Is your insurance only paying for 28? Weird.

@DaddyEvil .......Maybe you're supposed to rest for two days or something. Or they ran out of both at the exact same amount.

@celticeagle Nope. The doctor didn't say anything like that and I've been taking all my meds for over a year just the way they are. Nothing has changed. If they ran out of something they should have told me and brought me the remainder of the meds before the end of the month.

I honestly don't know. I'll call Monday and ask if something is going on that they didn't tell me about.

Is that what you're supposed to be getting? I'm supposed to get meds for every day of the month.

@Traceyjayne We don't have to reorder meds. As long as the prescription hasn't expired, we are automatically given the doses for the next month.

@DaddyEvil I have one per day so when I have about two weeks left I reorder. If I have a course of tablets with an amount different to what’s on the box I get the extras loose ( in a wrapper but not boxed ). From January I won’t have to pay so as long as I get them in time I don’t bother about it too much.

I will. Once in a while I'll drop a pill but normally pick it up and take it. I assumed I'd dropped several of them and they rolled under my dresser, which I can't move by myself. At least I know now I haven't been being that clumsy.

The only time that happened to me was with my pain medication, but then I changed doctors, and that stopped. I wouldn’t like the 28 day thing either. At the very least, you should have been informed.

It's the pharmacy's way of making more money? Or they're stuck in a timewarp and think it's February.

That is terrible usually they give 30 day supplies. 28 will cause you to run short every month.

Yes, it will. When I ran short last month I thought I'd just dropped some of them and they rolled under my dresser. (The dresser is too heavy for me to move by myself.) I'll have to call the pharmacy and ask why they're shorting me on all my meds Monday. Walmart never did that.

Your doctor may be a bit senile, usually they always look at the calendar before giving a prescription.

My doctor is in her 40s but could still be going senile... I don't think so, though. She has a staff and they would notice if something weird was happening.

I knew I run out of meds before the month is up but didn't think too much about it until now. I was several days short of enough meds this month so I checked to see how many pills I should have in the bottles. I couldn't believe it when I saw they only gave me enough for 28 days.

Vince is always complaining as his tablets come in all different number combinations. Some have 50 tablets, some 30, etc, etc, so they all run out at different times.

Mine were all prescribed at different times but this new-to-us pharmacy brought all my meds to the same date so they only have to bring them to me once a month. I used to complain at Walmart pharmacy because I hated having to drive to the pharmacy every few days to pick up a new prescription. Now, all my meds come due at the same time.

Oh geez - shrinkflation even on meds ! That is strange. I'm not understanding about the 28 day cycle as there's only 1 month like that (it's obviously not Feb) . . . you need them daily, right?

Yes, about half my meds are one daily but the other half are at least twice a day. I do have one that I take four tablets a day.

Sounds like shrinkflation…giving you less for the same cost. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s “the norm” now for insurance companies. Two-three pills a month, especially of expensive medication, can add up to “big savings” for them…and, of course, big trouble for us.

I take no medications so I have never known this, I do find it interesting when you find out I would be interested in knowing why. Eureka I found out why on the net, Here is the explanation for you The prescription of 28 pills for a 31-day month is often due to dosage schedules. Many medications are prescribed to be taken daily, but some may require a specific regimen that doesn't align perfectly with the number of days in a month. Here are a few reasons for this: Weekly Dosing: Some medications are taken for 28 days, followed by a break or a different regimen. Safety and Monitoring: Prescribing a smaller quantity allows for better monitoring of the patient's response and any side effects. Insurance and Cost Considerations: Insurance plans may have limits on the number of pills dispensed at one time, leading to a 28-pill prescription.

That's a good explanation IF I had any that are scheduled like that. I don't. Mine are all supposed to be one a day or twice a day. I do take one medication that I am supposed to take four times a day. Walmart pharmacy always gave me the full count for a month. It would be weird for the insurance to change that just because I switched pharmacies. (The new pharmacy delivers which Walmart wouldn't since I do get some injectable meds.) We switched pharmacies because I can't see to drive more than 90% of the time and Pretty can't drive. That meant we couldn't get our meds and, sometimes, had to wait for weeks to pick up the meds for the new month.

I just asked Pretty if the doctor said anything about shorting me pills and she said to check with the pharmacy on Monday. I knew I ran out of my blood pressure meds several days early (I take one morning and night) but thought I'd lost a few somehow.
