Earlier today, late afternoon around 5 pm, my husband was at work, I was home alone. I had finished dusting a couple of tables when I saw something in my kitchen!! What did I see? A 4 to 5 foot long black snake!!!!!!!!!!!!! I grabbed my phone, kindle and pocket book and ran out of the house. I thought about jumping in to my car and driving to my husband's work, but I thought I should knock on my neighbor's door and see if they were home first. That is what I did and luckily they were home. I frantically told them. My neighbor's husband got a bucket and stick from his shed and he and his wife walked over to my house, entered and found that tacky creature. He scooped it up in his bucket and took it off somewhere far. I thanked my neighbors a lot. They are good people. I texted my husband about this. He thinks it came through the dryer vent. I think he is probably right. Here is a question for you here on MyLot. Since the snake was around our house and found a way in, are there more that could enter? I have calmed down some. But, I am still pretty much a nervous wreck.

Oh my..so scary ..glad you are okay Anne. That happened to me once too. I cut its head off with a shovel. It slithered over my feet in the basement while I was doing laundry. We had a 'rockery' in the garden and that's where it came from. It was a big one too.

@LeaPea2417 .........Can you close up the vent a bit? That experience would be quite unnerving.

That had to have been such a terrifying thing to find! I couldn't imagine how I would react but I would be paranoid for a very long time especially having kids in the house. Glad your neighbors were able to help you out though!

@IvySaysHi I am still nervous, because I read online that if there is one there could be more nearby. My husband is buying snake repellent today to put out.

I'm glad you have a neighbor that can corral a snake. Yes, more could get in. DE has some good suggestions. Snakes don't bother me too much unless they are poisonous.

If one snake found its way in through the dryer vent, then more could come in the same way. At this time of year, snakes are looking for warmth and shelter from the cold. Snakes are cold-blooded so need an outside source of heat to stay comfortable and something to eat. If snakes can get in through the dryer vent, so can mice and rats which the snakes like to eat. I hope your hubby is either good at patching up holes snakes and mice could get in through or you guys know a good pest-control company to come and fix the holes.

@LeaPea2417 Good! I'm glad. That type of work done by a professional can be quite expensive! I hope your hubby can take care of that quickly. I wouldn't like a snake or any animal, for that matter, coming into my house.

It's hard to say if there'd be more or not. I hope you've got any entry points sealed off now.

I had a similar incident at my school. We saw a cobra on the Principal's table.Cobra is perhaps the most dangerous snake in the world. I informed the gardener about it. He rushed in the office with a thick towel in his hand, three the towel on the snake, and caught it. He then threw the cobra in a bag and took it to a jungle two kms away from our school. There he released the cobra in bush atop a hillock.

In the case of snakes, he was probably and most likely just a loan intruder. But if he did, in fact, come in through the dryer vent, I'd get that issue fixed. It shouldn't be open. There should be a screen of sorts on it on the outside, and on the inside, there should be nothing open for anything to do anything but get stuck in the hose.

Oh, no way...I am no snake lover. I wouldn't even be able to handle that at all, I would have left, too. Snakes are sneaky, and I just don't like sneaky!

@MarieCoyle I agree. My neighbor's were lucky that when they walked in to my house, that it was visible because if it had slid off somewhere and was hiding itself, I would have had to go stay at my son's house until it was found and exterminated.

thank god the neighbors were home to get the snake, but as far as another 1 coming in, I wouldn't think so BUT, I wouldn't put it past them. I would figure out HOW to block where they came in at.

@LeaPea2417 if there is a screen over your dryer vent that won't obstruct the heat & the lent that comes out then it shouldn't have got in UNLESS there's another area you haven't seen.

I had a snake inside one of my client's homes when I worked with the adult disabled. The one girl ran faster than I have ever seen her looking for me (I was passing meds at another house.) The room mate was just as calm as could be and said "Poor thing, it must be cold." I scooped it up with a dustpan and took it away from the ladies' fourplex. That would have been all I would have needed, 8 panicked women. I see them here, but only outside. I like that they keep the mice away.

It is really a blessing to have a kind and good neighbor. Maybe it got lost and went inside your house. If you have an untidy lawn or untidy kitchen, maybe there still some in it, but I hope not.
